Great overview John. Pac-man 256 and Champion Edition might be my favorites from this collection. And I have to say, it is stunning how well OG Pac-Man holds up as a game today. So well-designed. Like others have said, it would have been nice if this had included some of the Bally games. Jr. Pac-Man is a long-time favorite of mine. And I do think Champion Edition DX and Ms. Pac-Man are each a notch better than their immediate predecessors. But I do enjoy this collection for what it offers.

Why isn't Championship DX in this collection?!? That's the most baffling omission. They have two versions of Arrangement so no excuse there. This now means this game is unavailable on Switch. There is already a mobile port of this game on Android, so half (probably more than half) the work was already done.

PacMan motos was a pac man themed update of an old arcade game from the 80s (called unsurprisingly Motos) - it was a top down 2D game with similar mechanics (bump your opponents off the playfield) - a hidden gem (albeit one that has appeared in a lot of Namco collections over the years).

I hooked up my fight/arcade stick for this and it's pretty fun. I like how there are objectives to strive for in order to unlock other content. It adds a fresh new layer to the games. Game Pass really came through on this and Sniper Elite 5 recently.

Arrangement arcade is amazing. A C for that is so off. I mean, I agree it's Pac Man 2. How is that not an endorsement? The console version is slow and punched in an just... worse. Not the same at all. Pac in Time is a much worse version of Fury of the Furries, but I don't know if bad FotF is an F. The only reason Pac Man CE could be lower than an S is if they had added CE DX+. Since they didn't, CE is by default the best game in this bundle. But yeah, go get CE DX and maybe CE2 from Steam along with this, it feels incomplete without them. Oh, and 256 is the second best game here, maybe tied with Arrange and should have been an A.

I'm so glad this includes Pac n Roll Remix! I played the original Pac n Roll on the DS and Remix on the Wii back in the day and I definitely have a soft spot for it. And of course Pac-Man Arrangement is an old favorite of mine too. I'm also glad 256 was included because I'd never played it before and I ended up liking it a lot. With Pacmania, I think the "issue" that we have is that it's traditional PacMan style but you can't see the whole level. Just feels like something is missing during gameplay.

Pacmania gets fast. It’s the most sequel to the original for me with the jumping. The only flaw is that when it gets fast, Pac-Man spends so long in the air it’s hard to judge when you might land. But it’s a very pure and meaningful iteration of the core formula. I give it an S - I can’t get enough of it. Fun fact, A Pac in Time is a port of Fury of the Furries on Amiga. Not an angry mob of teenagers at a convention who can’t get wifi on their phones.

I really enjoy your videos and appreciate you making them. I am actually old enough as well to remember when Pac-Man came out and I instantly fell in love. I am glad you mentioned the controls on this video because I really wish there was a way to have a regular Atari style joystick with the Switch. I feel old when I say that to people but to me there’s nothing like that feel in an arcade cabinet. Or at least a way to customize the controls on the Switch. I love Pac-Man 99 and I was so very very happy when I realized I could make changes to the controls and be able to use the right joycon joystick to play the game; it makes such a difference to me. I love love Super Pac-Man and not being able to make the same kind of change to the controls when playing on this Switch version really frustrates me. I do love this release overall and I hope more games can be added/bought later or there’s a sequel. Thank you for your videos and for letting me vent.

I'd say the biggest problem with this collection is having to spend the coins to play about half of the games. I don't mind spending the coins on the stores to buy the little trinkets, and I get replicating the arcade experience, but it just gets in the way.

I bought this collection specifically for Battle Royale, as it was always my favorite game to play with friends and strangers alike at QuarterWorld in Portland, OR. I would probably spend another $20+ on a fully fleshed out remake or remaster of it with online support, bot support, new mazes, etc.

Having a lot of fun with this and really enjoying ALL the games. You still can’t beat the original but there is fun to be had with all of them. I love Pacman Championship Edition as it has the base mechanics and those combos are very satisfying. Battle Royale is awesome with 4 people around. Pac-Man 256 didn’t do much for me on devices with the whole swiping business. I overlooked it but it is actually awesome and a really present surprise. Add 4 players to the mix and wow - great game and glad they included it. Motos and the roll are also really fun. I even like Pac-Man in Time which is Fury of the Furries from the Amiga days. I did end up getting stuck in the end which was when the frustration you mentioned kicked in. I may end up agreeing with you with more play but it is fun zipping around on the grappling hook thing. The difficult bit is trying to jump up levels with it. Motos and the roll game are also better than I expected and fun to play. Arrangement is good but takes time to learn so it isn’t as pick up and play. I used to like Pacmania because you couldn’t get trapped but it does seem to run very slow. I am not sure if it was always like that or once you go back to it after the manic Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 it just seems that way. Pac-Mania is maybe a fun game that hasn’t aged as well as the others. I am with you and like Super Pac-Man and Pac N Pal is really good too but like Arrangement isn’t as accessible and takes some practice. Playing around with the arcade is also good fun. Yes, just wish it Ms Pac-Man and Jr. Pacman but if those aren’t possible, this is close to perfect and an essential purchase for any Pacman fan. Good video and interesting thoughts on each game.

I learned about this collection a few days ago. Busy with another game right now but I intend to grab it on Steam before the "Month 1 Edition" disappears. Not because I have any real interest in any of the titles in the collection, but more because Pac-Man is a (small) part of my arcade-going childhood and, just like with Sol Cresta, I sort of owe it to the creators to support them when they drag out old properties for us like this. That said, I held the worldwide top scores in Pac-Man CE DX (across all platforms) back when it was current, so my interest in Pac-Man software isn't strictly skin deep. This collection includes the prequel to said game, Pac-Man CE, which I also played but didn't enjoy nearly as much because its gameplay mechanics were too brutal and unforgiving. With CE DX, they found the perfect balance, and it remains the very best Pac-Man game ever conceived. They squandered this balance with CE DX 2, making a major component of the gameplay far too random to recapture the magic of its predecessor. If this collection maintains high score tables for any of its titles, I've already learned not to place any faith whatsoever in Namco-Bandai when it comes to sniping cheaters and hackers. They do not care. No matter how easy it would be to prevent it. Hackers will hack and Namco will totally ignore it. It's a shame.

@@darkridearts Yah I do keep an eye out for a hypothetical CE2 DX, but I think they sort of shot themselves in the foot. They made each successive game more casual, but CE2 was just too casual and missed the point. So I bet sales weren't super duper for that one. It's an even bigger shame because as far as the soundtracks went, well those just kept getting better and better and CE2 has the best of them all. I'd love to hear more from that composer. I did pick up Pac-Man Museum+ and give it a brief spin. My verdict: It's most likely emulating the games (or at least Pac-Man, since that's the one I checked out), which is good, because it means the little challenges they set up are actually legit. Unfortunately, the sound is not being emulated. Instead, everything you hear is pre-recorded digital samples being played at appropriate moments. The reason I was able to determine this is because the result is very off. Maybe even less faithful than the similar effort on the Nintendo DS. The siren sound and power-up sound are both looped samples and you can actually hear where they loop. MAME has gotten this right for 25 years so it's kinda something I can't really forgive Namco for.

The only Pac-man I had growing up was pacmania on the c16plus4, it looked just like the original pac-man only it was hard as nails, i'd be lucky to get past about 4 levels. It had these H blocks, which stood for hyper jump which transported you to a different part of the screen, which sometimes you could land right in front of a ghost, which by the way moved faster than pac-man.

It's a great collection, but I'm kinda disappointed you can't edit the games' (like previous collections, and in Arcade Archives) like the lives/difficulty, and such. (Except in Pac-Man Arrangement Console version.) Or if you can I don't know how. I'd honestly recommend getting the Arcade Archives version of "Pac-Land" as it actually has the stage select option.

I feel so shamed of myself lol. I was an 80's kid and I had no idea whatsoever there were THIS many different pacman games. I knew there were a handful, but I only knew about a half dozen or so at best, apparently lol. Some of these are the stinkers I knew but some of them look really good. My overall favorite version I knew about and always liked was the Super Nintendo version of Mr's Pac man, however I do really like the "new" (to those of us who grew up w/ pac man / mrs pac man on Atari 2600, everything after to us is "new" lol) is the championship edition. I too played a lot on ps3 and now it's on my ps4 also. Still rocking emulation version of super nes mrs. pacman when I really feeling like playing, the new version there is pretty fun with the bright cool colors that would have knocked our socks off back in the 80's if we could have seen that coming, us 80's kids would have been right beside ourselves, let me tell ya lol. Loads of cool looking editions in there, I never knew about. "Arrangement" "pac modos" "pac and roll" "battle royale" and "256" especially, really interest me. Those are all great looking pac man games.

I like how the bezel screens are also a part of the game. The best Pacman game is Super Pacman.

Pac-Man made an appearance in an arcade game called kick Man. they should have included that except the game used a trackball. you can still play it with a joystick though.

I wish Pac-Man adventure from sega genesis made it on here. That was one of my favorite games of all time. Being able to shoot stuff with the slingshot was a lot of fun back in the day

PAC Motos is based on the arcade game Motos. Used to love the zx spectrum port of Motos back in the day if you've not played the arcade you should check it out.

I really LOVE the NES version of Pac-Man Championship Edition they included in Namco Museum Archives, it's so cool to see modern games ported to retro systems. Can't wait to get this collection, though I'll have to import it since it doesn't seem like there will be an European physical release.

Pac-Man CE originally released on the Xbox 360 and was never specifically released on PS3. There was a window during which a number of simpler Japanese games, like Pac-Man CE, Idolmaster and a ton of shooters, got released exclusively on Xbox 360 because it was about ten times easier to make a game on said platform than PS3 (and, ironically, games almost always played better on 360 due to its slightly superior architecture, despite the console releasing a whole year earlier).
