Hey Trena- can you use a Dremel with rasp bits to move out the burns? That oak is very dence an you risk cutting yourself or slicing past the repair. Be careful.

that is a transformation to say the least.... i live in maine on a fixed income... and retired. so as i do agree with you about minwax being a poor quality product... i do use it in my re furbishing of furnitures. it works for me... i dont have the space/ equipt you do. i working literally in my dining room, so i do what i can...i use minwax , then sand with a dry/wet sandppr. then i use poly for a top coat... 3/4 coats with sanding betwn coats. then i use car wax and buff the hell out of it. my results are very pleasing considering what i have to work with. and yes i clean house every wk!!!!! it can be overwelming at times.. but i do with what i have to work with... i live in town on .14 acers. and 15 ft betwn houses. so no room for even building a shed for a work space outside the house . so i envy anyone who can have the space to have a work shop on any kind... great job as always trena!!!!! keep them coming... you are very fortunate to have such a gorgeous home.

I don't think that they leave the cigarettes on the table. I think they leave the butts in an ashtray and walk out of the room while the lit cig flips on the table unsupervised. As an ex-smoker, I've had similar accidents, but they never learned apparently.

I highly doubt that they set the cigarette on the table, but I know that cigarettes if left in an ashtray can fall off and burn wherever they land. My mom and dad used to smoke at the table and had burn holes where the cigarette burned before they realized it wasn’t in the ashtray and picked it up again.

Not that I have seen that many leaf tables, but this one is the first with metal gears and racking to extend. Yes pretty Grotty. That is one big bucket of grain filler. I suppose if you are doing a lot then you need 'A lot'. I use Timber mate putty , and add water until it is like sloppy custard. 😎.

It was very useful to see you sorting out those burns. I have a MCM teak table that was damaged by a leaking AA battery and ended up with a shallow battery-shaped scoop etched into the veneer. It’s an easy refinish otherwise but that scoop has had me stumped and unwilling to even start the refinishing process!
@juliakathryn2582

Can you do this with veneer? I have a Drexel bedside table and the damage done to the poor thing is beyond belief. I'm sure the top has cigarette burns. I haven't started repairing it yet and it's a set of bedside tables. Bonus! Or should I replace the areas with veneer?

Trena, nice job in the end. Thanks for doing such a painstaking job! You totally threw me when you finished the table with Golden Oak (a fave), then in the next scene you had hit the table with a “very, very thin black stain”. I said to myself, ohmygosh Trena’s gone round the bend! But once you finished it up with the lacquer and topcoat color, it was very sunny and beautiful. Alls well that ends well.

Cigarette burns are nasty. About 30 years ago I worked at the security center of our Dutch Telephone Company. Smoking was allowed in office back then. I forgot my cigarette on the astray and went for lunch. A collegue discovered that my cigarette fell of the astray onto paperwork. I had luck, the cigarette extinguished and the papers didn't ignite. I was very glad. It could be realy bad...

That table turned out beautifully -- reminds me of the "golden oak" furniture from the late 1970s and 1980s that was all the rage when we first got married. We don't have much any more, as our tastes gravitated towards maple, cherry, and walnut, but seeing it always brings back fond memories.

As usual a great restoration. I have an oak table that I want to fix up, and to be honest the more I watch the more confused I am. I think I will just clean it, glue up a few places, and use something like Restore a Finish, then wax it. And maybe check the slides. I post about owning a hardware store, and I sell Minwax stain. I think it's fine for most people, but for those of you who delve deep into restoration, I can't find a supplier for that stuff. My suppliers don't sell toners, etc. It's a bit of a niche business that a regular hardware store can't supply as we don't have the demand. I can bring in Old Masters, but I have never had a request for any other stain - well maybe a few, but few and far between. And I love the nature and the garden. I am a bit overwhelmed with work and my garden has been less than I want, but I have given it no attention. I think next year I will just grow flowers. I need to reduce the demands that I put on my time. Retail hardware is good, but I feel drained after the last few years.

Do you know what that title did for your video to me? For the first few minutes I thought you were going to cut dozens of drainage holes to allow the grease and crud to drain out. LOL... Nah, I'm just kidding, but seriously I think the grease was the protective finish. And those cigarette burns were insane. You know I've done electronic projects with a old soldering iron that didn't have a stand or base and I've left burns similar to that, I have a professional equipment now, so that doesn't happen, but I wonder if that's what they could have been? And MinWax is very "MIN"imum... now I know... Well, at any rate, you did a beautiful job of repairing and fixing that table... and as always, thank you for being a great teacher of the craft.

Krud Kutter is great--I use it all the time for antique sewing machine and cabinet restration. The fashion in the late 19th/early 20th century was to use a dark grain filler on oak to emphasize the grain patterns--especially effective on quarter-sawn oak. I agree that Minwax stains have but a pinch of pigment in a can. I love grain painting areas of lost veneer and reproduced ornamental trim. Great save of a lovely piece! I'd like to see it on its legs, too.

A place to not only restore furniture, but to restore one’s soul. I actually prefer the minwax gel stain, because I Don'. It gives you time to decide what color you want. How much you want in there? Cause the longer you leave it in there, the darker it gets, and I used the same stain on multiple pieces, and it all looks different because the wood is different.
