I'm Phillys from Venezuela, thanks for your valuable information... I'd like to know what weights do yo use for medicine balls???

Hi Phillys, use a med ball that can be moved fast. So this will depend on the level, power and age of the athlete. The weight does not want to be too heavy. We use 3-5-8kg med balls. The latter are for the older more powerful guys. We actually go from heavier to lighter med balls across the training phase to allow for greater speed/velocity. Hope this helps

Hello, coach! In your opinion, which med ball exercises have the best transference to standing vertical jump? (Basketball, volleyball)
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach8 ай бұрын
Take a look at the first of the two med ball videos. - there are some vertical displacement jumps with a triple extension emphasis which would translate well. Also drop jumps onto two feet going up using the ball as added resistance. Double footed jumps forward to then go up and potentially release the ball … from the flat or from a box … these come to mind. Hope this helps

What is last three step for long jump ? The second last step is "penultimate step " but what is third last step ?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach7 ай бұрын
Without trying to sound sarcastic, it’s the step prior to the penultimate … I like jumpers to drive in hard from that step onto the penultimate. Hope that clarifies

Do tou think a 12kg ball is too heavy?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach7 ай бұрын
Well it will depend on how much power you have and also the stage of training you are in. We are reducing the weight of the ball as the outdoor season approaches, so that the jumpers can develop more power and greater elasticity. Consider that more weight does not make an exercise more developmental.

Is this theoretical or are these exercises backed up by research?

What element? Ground contact transference is a widely applied concept with research to provide understanding and guidance. Coaches are often ahead of the curve as they work out what sports science tries to approve or disprove. Much of what a coach does is based on the application and appliance of sports science but if they went just on the science then progression would be stymied by the non use of the creative process and specific real world application and evaluation. It’s complicated! This works fit the jumpers in my training group. It’s not random guess work but rooted in specific understanding of ground contact data. Hope this helps
