Thank you for this. A buddy of mine thought I needed a timing adjustment and took it upon himself to mess up my timing. I've read about this method but was kinda confused on some of it. Your video clarified my confusion. Thanks a bunch

Glad it helped. I found the process difficult to follow and thought that I couldn't be the only one. I am very pleased that you found the link and that it was useful. Cheers

Very good instructions. Thank you for posting this to the community. First time I’ve thing timing set with the engine off though.

Muchas gracias, utilicé este método en Johnson 90 HP, funciona perfectamente. Lo mas importante es colocar correctamente el indicador de TDC el manual indica como hacerlo, y luego hacer exactamente lo realizado en éste video.

Why the brown wire grounded? Wouldn’t that put it in slow mode. The white wire is the quick start isn’t it?

Great instruction. Can you please elaborate on how to use the timing gun? What are you pointing the light to and what result are you expecting to see? Thanks.

Ah, yes good question. I ran out of hands to show the actual use of the timing light. The light is triggered by the spark going to number one cylinder. The light flashes onto the pointer and shows the marks on the timing wheel as the spark occurs. The setting for low speed is 4 deg after top dead center and for maximum advance 20 deg befor top dead center. I hope that helps.

Great video. The only thing i can't get to work is the starter button. When i jump my that way just the starter spins and not the motor. I have to jump my solenoid to get the motor to spin. Not sure if this way messes with the timing

Hi, if you have connected the live side of the solenoid (direct from the battery) to one side of the switch and the other lead from the switch to the starter motor it should work. Make sure you have heavy duty wires and swict to carry sufficient current for the starter motor.

Little late but do u have the cdi power pack to do this

No. I had to sell the boat as I got too old to take it out on my own. Loved working on the motor, and do miss that. It was a god project.

I did everything you said and my idle timing and my wot timing is both too far advanced. Hard to tell but maybe 10 degrees how did you set the pointer?

It is a bit hard to describe. I used the vernier calipers rod, touching the top of the piston through the spark plug hole, to determine two points equal distance from top dead centre for cylinder 1. I then adjusted the pointer so that the timing marks were the same on the plus side and minus side at those two points. Turn the flywheel clockwise until the piston touches the calliper rod before top dead centre. Note the timing mark the pointer is at. Turn the flywheel beyond TDC until the piston is just touching the calliper rod after top dead centre. Note the timing mark the pointer is at. The degrees before top dead centre and degrees after top centre must be the same to ensure that the pointer is set correctly. It is fiddly. Do it a couple of times to be certain you have it right. Then check it again... Good luck and thanks for the question.
