This is the most clear and concise video that I have found, and I have watched a TON of videos on how to troubleshoot my snowblower not starting. My next-door-neighbor gave me his snowblower before he moved. It started up, ran for a couple of minutes, made a "pop", then died. I will be using your troubleshooting tips to diagnose it and (hopefully) get it running again. Kudos on some great tips!

WOW !!! my husband was just shy of bringing our exact blower into the shop because of the exact same issue. He watched your video and went out in the garage and undid the bowl bolt and drained some gas for about 30 seconds. The bolt went back in, he primed it, used the electric start and the second try it kicked right over. He let it run for about 5 min, and turned it off. He then tried with the pull start and on the first pull it kicked right over. Thank you, I am sure it saved us at least $100.

Thank you, Brad! Learning from your video, I drained the carburetor. And the snow blower could be started. The drained gas appeared two layers. The upper layer was clear while the bottom layer was opaque and light yellow. My snow blower is three years old. I couldn't start it this winter. The oil is about 10 mm higher than the top, but it was added by the manufactory. I exchanged a new spark plug. The same problem. I left it in the living room to warm it, but the next day the issue was still there. I called the authorized repair shop; he told me the carburetor need to be rebuilt for $150. The Home Depot called they need 4-6 weeks to repair it and $30 for inspection first. I had to try myself. I carefully watched your video, judged my issue and reasoned it step by step. I thought maybe there is some gas in the oil. But I decided to flush the carburetor first because it's easy. Then it worked. I was very happy. The oil is very clean, clear. So, I decided not to replace it. Last spring, before off-season storage, I only sucked fuel from the tank with a tube pump. I rushed to use home machines without reading the manual and had no idea about letting the engine using up the fuel before storage. I read the manual carefully and ran my mower and leaf blower till the gas was used up. This would be a correct storing operation. Thank you again. I like your video, so clear, so logical, effective and concise! 👍👍👍

Hey Brad great video I'm new to your channel I have a 26 year old MTD 5hp tecumseh snowblower. I use to have this problem periodically and once I switched to non ethanol gas I haven't had a problem since. The ethanol is what gums up the carbs on these small engines. I still drain all my gas out of my snowblower at the end of the season and drop the bowl to clean it, since using the non ethanol gas the bowl is always clean. I spray the inside of the carb with WD40 and put the bowl back on and haven't had any carb problems for years now. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us I feel it truly makes myself and others more confident in taking on the problem at hand.

Exactly. DO NOT USE ethanol gasoline in small engines! If you must, run the gas out of it and drain the bowl when done using it for the season. Ethanol gas will gum up carbs after several months if not before.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re talking about but if I think you’re talking about the electric starter? It may be loose? I have not seen a electric starter teeth not line up with the flywheel teeth when engaged other than the starter being loose. Check your mounting hardware. If it’s tight you may have broken teeth, on either the flywheel or the starter. I do not have any videos on that subject at the moment.

A lot of times, on Toro-type machines, a full rebuild/cleaning is not necessary. The culprit, in this case is probably the pilot jet being clogged. The carb will still have to be uncovered to access the pilot jet, but not removed. I just fixed my surging Toro by cleaning the pilot jet only.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines11 ай бұрын
Good looking out but incorrect engine. Your “Toro” had a Tecumseh engine on it and you can do that easily on a Tecumseh engine. You Cannot easily remove the what you’re saying is the “pilot jet” on the China engines without disassembling shrouds. Most of the time on the China engines the center jet and emulsion tubes clog that is in the center of the carburetor.

I believe most of these blowers have a tiny slim fuel filter in the fuel tank. If that is clogging it won't run correctly. Some suggest removing it and using an inline fuel filter instead.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Yes, most due have the filter in the fuel tank and they almost never get clogged. They are raised up in the tank and most debris sits on the bottom of the thank. Ass long as you have a good fuel flow the in the tank filter does not normally give you a issue. The newest engines on the market have a inline fuel filter that does restrict the flow. your welcome. got big storm coming to Missouri tomorrow night we think. only used this one time last year worked fantastic. this year we got it out to get it warmed up and nothing . elec start cranks no fire. pull starting no spark. we did leave gas in from last year. in garage all year, oil clear checked fine. going to drain some like in video and tap on it to loosen. hopefully it will start up. luv the video straight to all points perfectly explained. thanks again

Thank you so much for making this excellent video! I bought a new snowblower last year, maybe used it 12 hours or so and forgot to empty out the fuel line. Tried starting it up this year, and ran into the same issues with old fuel in the carburetor.

Drain the bowl and smack it with a wrench! Started instantly. Thank you, I'd never have figured that out. Seems to be a common issue, based on the comments. What would you recommend for end-of-season storage so this doesn't happen next year?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, stop using pump gas and start using ASPEN fuel. It's a little pricy but you will not have to worry about the gas going bad. You must take all the regular gas out or run it dry before using the ASPEN to get the benefits. Read up on it. I am not sponsored by ASPEN at all. No ethanol and stays fresh for a very long time. Check into it. Here is a link. www.aspenfuels.us/products/all/. I have been using it for around three years and it is great fuel. My opinion, better than Tru-Fuel.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines15 күн бұрын
Then, check shear pins and belts. If there was snow that was left inside and the snow froze, that will keep the auger from spinning. Rocks jammed between the augers and barrels will also stop the augers from spinning

1100 for this snowblower last year and it’s having issues immediately the following year. Is this what we paid for? Not a knock in the vid, you were very clear on how to diagnose the issue. I’ll try this out but very disappointed with Troy built.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
If this video helps you and it was gas going bad that has made your machine hard to start or a no start condition. It was not the machines fault or the manufacturer. It was the gas going bad. Check out Aspen4 gas. Check out there website “Aspen Fuel”. They have been around over 25years. Find a location near you to purchase it and your problem will be solved. That is if your machine issue is bad gas. Let me know.

Good video, unfortunately that's where I'm at with mine (end of the video) where I took my whole machine apart, drained the bowl, cleaned out the carb super good with cleaner and wiping/blowing and made sure seals were all good. Use the electric start and it sounds like it wants to start but just won't turn over. I've actually run it 3 times this season already, and then it up and died on me mid-use last week. can't figure it out.

Try a new spark plug? Spark is good? Compression is good? Make sure your fuel is ok? Did you look in the description for the video on “how to rebuild the carburetor”? After all that I would need to see it because it should run if all above is ok.
@sigguy1361 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I had good spark off the plug when I tested it. The last thing I’ll try tomorrow is making sure the port holes in the carb bowl bolt are clear. 👍🏼

If mine isn't starting consistently, would it be more advantageous in using manual pulling rather than electric start? Like manual pulling will help circulate something better? If it's the same, can I hold onto the electric button for longer each try? I know not more than 10 seconds as the label says
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
If your machine is not starting consistently, you have a issue. Pulling the pull cord is not as efficient as using the electric starter. Turning the engine faster , the easier it will start.

After winter, I always run the gas out. After watching this, I think I will drain it instead. Do you recommend either? Also, When storing after winter, you say not to have the choke in the 1/2 way position. Should you have the choke knob at 12:00 or the 3:00 position when in storage? Thank You. You have a GREAT video.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, Running the gas out then draining the carburetor bowl is the best way to get all of the gas out when storing the machine. When I said about the choke being on 1/2 way. I meant the customer was compensating for having a carburetor issue by leaving the choke on 1/2 to run the machine. It does not matter where the choke knob is when storing the machine. Please give this video a like as it does help the channel. It would be greatly appreciated.

Very helpful video - When I pressed the electric start, there is no sound at all. Could there be an electrical issue? or is the electric starter bad? I'll need to run the diagnostics again, but at this point I can not get it to start even a little.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
If you know you electric cord is good and the starter does not spin the engine over. Your starter is bad. The electric starter only spins the engine. It does not start the engine.

My motor is stuck on my snowblower. I must have run it with bad oil. I have tryed putting down the spark plug hole and that didnt work. Any suggestions?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
If you put the machine away last season and it was not stuck? Then you may have a few different issues. Perform all of the below possibilities with the spark plug out. One could be your belts on the front engine pulley may be stuck. Takeoff your belt cover and make sure your belts are loose on the engine pulley. If they are OK then I would suggest if you can take off your recoil assembly in the front of the engine and try and get a socket on the fly wheel nut and use a bar or a long extension ratchet to try and turn over the machine by hand. If you see any signs of mice that may have been inside the engine they could also have made it home and the engine will not spin over. Then you would need to remove the entire recoil housing from the engine and clean out. I guess the big question is, did the engine seize while you were using it or not? Also if you have stored the machine in a very moist condition there may be a slight chance of the cylinder is stuck from rust and it seems like because you put oil down the cylinder it should have loosened up.

Do you have any videos that deal with frozen cables? I have condensation in my cables and I don't want to have to run a blow dryer over my cables every time I need to move snow
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure your weather is much colder then where I am so I do not have much experience with extreme cold and frozen cables but you could try Fluid Film. This may be a little tricky but "Fluid Film" will stick around a long time and I have used it for years. The problem is that fluid film is a thicker spray but if you can heat up your machine in a warm environment, you may be able to get the fluid film down inside where the cables are and once it is in there is does keep lubricating a very long time. Here is a link. Fluid Film. amzn.to/3Iecopy

Have worked on 4 of these new style carburetors. 3 machines, someone else had already wrenched on & 1 I took apart. I can't , for the life of me, to get them to run without choke. Cleaned carbs, by hand & ultrasonic cleaner, etc. Still, needs choke to run smoothly. Do the gaskets go bad way sooner on the new stuff? Very frustrating
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, watch my how to clean this carburetor video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ_KfGmia8R9bck. Just to make sure your not missing anything. As long as the gaskets are not broken and look to be ok then most of the time they work.

I have a new machine (1 yr old Troy Built w/ a 357cc engine) that ran great last year but can't get it started this year. It sounds like the primer bulb is just blowing air and not pulling fuel into the carburetor. Any suggestions on how to 'prime the primer' bulb? Thanks!
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc, If your hearing the air when your pushing the primer bulb and you can confirm it’s connected to the carburetor, then it is working correctly. You will need to start the process of diagnosing the issue you have in this video. I’m sure your issue is gas going bad inside the carburetor. This may not be the exact engine model but it is the same process.
@marcwilliams-hcpf84932 жыл бұрын
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks Brad - agreed on the process. Also appreciate the tip in your other video about the notch on the cowling around the throttle. I was anxious about not breaking the plastic throttle piece along w/ the choke knob!
