Col. Gail Halvorsen is best known for his humanitarian work as a pilot in the Berlin Airlift... dropping candy to the German children from his Air Force cargo plane. This is another in the series of video biographies that we are producing for the Utah Aviation Hall of Fame.

I worked at the retirement home he lives in currently. At the time of this comment, he's 101 years old. He's such a sweet man, even so long after what he did during the Berlin Airlift. It's absolutely incredible what he did, and it was such an honor to be able to meet him.

I simply don't understand people who dislike this, not only was the Berlin airlift one of the greatest humanitarian efforts in history, this man went even further by giving children a bit of joy, of a country that just came out of one of the most horrifying conflicts in history, man deserves a medal of honor, but he definitely has my eternal respect

MOH is only given to those who have risked their lives above in beyond in combat. Not humanitarian scenarios. Regardless, I do think that he deserves some sort of humanitarian medal for his actions.

Sadly he did not receive the honorary citizenship of Berlin because (evil joke of history) the communist party objected 😲 Thank god he received the Bundesverdienstkreuz, the honorary medal of the state of Germany. I would feel ashamed if the communists would have blocked that either 😞 Edit: He is 100 years old now and survived Covid! What a hero! America can be proud of such a great man 🇺🇸❤️🇩🇪

EThe Berlin airlift was by far our worst act of racism. These candies and food should have been dropped in Japan. Ever since two scientists had a secret audience with President Roosevelt, with extensive drawings on how to make atom bombs gifted by Igor Kurchatov, America under radio inventor Marconi made atom bombs. Kurchatov back in 1943 knew that Soviet Union may use his atom bombs against Japan if he manufactured his atom bomb from his drawings. So Kurchatov passed on the drawings of atom bombs and air blast calculations required to destroy a city to the two scientists from central America whom he knew from before ww2, and Kurechatov requested these two men that his papers be forwarded to a sitting American president by the two scientists both citizens from central america from a country near Holland. These two men from a country from near Holland passed on the Kurchatov papers to President Roosevelt in Washington DC. The two men passed on the drawings of atom bombs drawn by Kurchatov's team of extremely smart (brilliant) dissident nuclear scientists. The drawijgs and papers on materials and air blast calculations were so detailed that any third countrycould have made an atom bomb, including America. After America assembled and built and exploded an atom bomb based on these papers with drawings and materials and air blast calculations, every second American became a racist. Candies meant to be dropped in Nagasaki and Hiroshima were diverted to Berlin. the pilot should have flown another plane load of chocolates to Nagasaki and Hiroshima. All it take is for one racist to divert food and chocolates from Japan to Germany! Whichever nursing home he is at, he should be arrested, in the opinion of a few non white Americans. It was partly racism. Some American pilots did Right after this, not want to drop chocolates to people of Asian national origin or African national origin. Lots of American govt food were approved and ready to be shipped to Japan and China in the years preceding Berlin blockade for newly nuked cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Some racist American civil servants and govt officials did not want to feed people of Asian national origin in these cities. They would rather send the food to people of European national origin. Some American officials would rather send the food earmarked for Asia and Africa, and send these to Germany. The Soviets had already been feeding Berliners to 3 years. They already arranged for additional distribution of food by East German new civil servants and Soviet soldiers and East German policemen and East German soldier and others to distribute food or to report any hidden families who may be hiding in basements . President Truman had a soft corner for these two cities in Japan, and had the food ready for japan. So, govt officials decided to find a high ranking government official with the same last name as an American war time general, to spearhead the diverting of food stock of America earlier earmarked for Japan, and to send these to Germany instead. Many Germans are saying now, "Had I known that some American officials were diverting food crates and food packets from being sent to nuked Japan to send these to Berlin, we would have turned down the offer back in 1948 or so. We Germans weren't that hungry, as soviets were already feeding us. In fact, we Germans in 1948 would have arrested these racist american pilots coming to supplement the food offered to us by the Soviets. The Soviets fed us everything except chocolates."
