Back when I had pure dirt bikes I had a master link clip that I re-used for a few different CR's and XR's. The thing was my lucky charm and was polished as thin as a razor blade by all the different sliders it worked with. But it lasted! However, since 2011 I've put about 130,000 (s)miles on a couple of F800GS's that came from the factory with "riveted" master link 525 chains. I was skeptical of the riveted master links at first, but I'm now a believer. The key is to have a micrometer to make certain you don't press the link on too tight (a $10 plastic mic works just fine) and then just hit the "I believe" button when you mushroom out the hollowed ends of the rivets. The rivets won't appear to deform to the naked eye, but they do, just enough. With regular cleaning and lube, I get well over 30,000 miles per chain and ring set; and that includes 20% dusty forest service roads commuting to the mountain I work at in Southern AZ (Mt Hopkins). I don't recall if riveted master links are available for the 520, but it's worth the consideration. Or course the downside is if you have to break a riveted chain, that chain is toast. But if you have to break it, there's something greater going on. BRAAAAAP!!!

John, Maybe next year you would consider a meet and greet and ride for like 4-5 days with all of your loyal followers. We could meet in Snowmass and take off. That would be cool. You design the epic route and we have some fantastic fellowship amongst like minded friends.

Congratulations for reaching Expo PNW! I wouldn't characterize wearing through your chain slider as "breaking" your bike- more like normal wear and tear. Good tip on doing work on your bike with the tools you carry on the road. Safe travels.

Oh man. Bummer on the chain slider. I have changed mine twice. This bike seems to eat them up quick. I have a brand new one hanging on my pegboard at home and I would send it to you however I’m back in Sheridan. My Honda dealer never has one so I just have to order one. Looks like a fun time at the expo.
