Hi John, we briefly chatted in Twin Falls Idaho a couple weeks ago when you were getting a master link. I was on the Africa twin and my wife was on the 390 adventure. I had a feeling I knew who you were but I didn’t recognize you with the beard. I watched some of your earlier clean-shaven vids a while back while looking for info on the 450l. Been enjoying your vids since I got back, great stuff!

Re the starting issue. A battery can show a reading of 13v but that’s it’s voltage when not under load. As soon as the starter tries to access the power of the battery to start the engine this reading can drop significantly showing the actual useable power in the battery. If this isn’t enough the starter won’t fire

If the compression is ok I wouldn’t do anything to the motor. Given that this bike has never been flogged like a race bike, I would just check valve clearances and carry out oil changes as you do. The ktm500 motors are easily lasting for 1000 hrs + with this type of use.
@JohnTYoung2 жыл бұрын

@@JohnTYoung have a look at rtwPaul and his YT channel. He recently interviewed a fellow who rode his 450exc from Estonia to Capetown and has logged about 50,000 reliable klm. RtwPaul has near that amount on his 500. The flagship bearer for long distance/KTM myth busting belongs to Kiwi Aaron Steinmann, who recently completed his 140,000 km round the world trip on his 500. From memory, he put on a new head at 60,000km to fix valve clearances(it was financially more favourable to get the head than do the valves) and only pulled the motor apart(as suggested by Honda at 20,000m/32,000km for your bike) at just over 100,000km but it was still OK. He did it given he had another 40,000km to ride in isolated locations. Both rtwPaul and Aaron did their oil changes in the 2-3000km range, just like you. The 500 motors since 2013 are proving to be the most durable high performance and easy to work on single cylinder engine this century.

Awesome trip! Hey - I just rode my 2022 CRFRL to Idaho - mostly rode the OR BDR route, but was on the interstate from tri cities until Spokane. The vibration was horrific on the highway - super uncomfortable! It’s a stock seat - do you think the seat upgrade will eliminate the vibration at 65 mph? Cheers - keep up the videos - love them!
@JohnTYoung2 жыл бұрын
What are you coming from? I rode a CRF250X and this L is smooth as butter compared to that. LOL. Coming from a T7, not so much. The seat will not help the vibration but will help your butt in every other way. I hate the stock L seat for actually sitting on.
@jimmelino33612 жыл бұрын
@@JohnTYoung I had a T7 - put 12k miles on it before trading it in for the CRF450RL in February. Downsized because the T7 was too heavy and difficult to pick up on the trails - I rode it on the ID BDR and S6 of the OR BDR. The 450 is definitely better suited for the trails (except for low rpm surging - I’ve got the Vortex ECU on order) but I was surprised at the vibration riding at 60 to 70 mph - super uncomfortable. I’m hoping that upgrading the seat will help, but damn man I’m skeptical.
@jimmelino33612 жыл бұрын
Got it - the seat upgrade will make the vibration bearable at Highway speeds.

Sorry if I missed it but I am curious about this GET ECU compared to the vortex and maybe even the AIM. I want to buy one of them but not sure what’s my best bet? I thought I could get away without a expensive aftermarket ecu but I recently got bucked off my 2022 RL and I am blaming 90% of the reason on the twitchy throttle. Thanks
@JohnTYoung2 жыл бұрын
I did not run the GET on this trip because i was having issues with it on my bike. Having said that I can not wait to install one. It did run relly well. I have an AIM but I have to get my bike put back together before I can ride it. You can't really go wrong with any of them.
