Hello John, I enjoyed your lesson on the Bossa Nova Beat. Mixing in the snare click on beats other than 2 & 4 has been tricky, but it is working, slowly. Any lesson of yours I have been able to review has been very good. You build your lessons in such a way that if followed step by step work great. Great teacher. Thank you. Dan

Thank you. I had the great pleasure of studying under a brilliant Brazilian pianist by the name of Marcos Silva. He introduced me to many great Brazilian recordings and was able to show me how to play Brazilian music properly. I don't feel l play as well as most Brazilian drummers, but have a much better understanding than most American drummers. Best wishes, John X

Nice lesson John and well taught on a topic that a lot of drummers won't go near due to the independence challenge. I love the Bossa Nova and I am very comfortable with all the variations. The Clave rhythms on the cross stick are so great in feel. I love to use the brush on the snare in a sweeping motion back and forth where the brush does not lift of the snare to give a really smooth flowing feel to it. Thanks again for this lesson. I just love latin.
@JohnXDrumLessons5 жыл бұрын
Peter Knispel thank you. I appreciate your in-depth comment. When I first started playing, the Bossa Nova scared the heck out of me. But like anything, if you stick with it long enough, you can overcome your fears and master whatever you’re working on. Gotta love those Latin grooves. God bless, John X

I like how you maintain an unaccented ride pattern while playing the syncopated sidestick patterns. I have a tendency to accent the ride pattern along with the sidestick. which is not what I want. So this was inspiring to get me practice it like you've played it. Thanks John.
@JohnXDrumLessons9 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful Sal. The accented right part comes from spending 1,000 hours working on one-hand 16th note funk grooves. I love your feel and the passion you possess on your videos. Keep up the great work.

Great lesson John. thank you. My challenge is to play the ride lightly enough so that it does not ring out too much on these softer rhythms. I'm using a 21' natural finish Sweet Ride. It really sustains.
@JohnXDrumLessons4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Fred. I'm glad you liked the lesson. Try using 2 or 3 half inch strips of duct tape on the bottom of your cymbal. This will cut the sustain. I use this on all my K Constantinople cymbals. Also, try using a lighter pair of sticks. The Vic Firth Peter Erskine model and the SD-10 both have a tip that will allow for a lighter sound on the ride cymbal. All the best, John X

Nice! Are you consciously letting the beater come off of the bass drum head? Do you ever play heel down for this beat?
@JohnXDrumLessons3 жыл бұрын
I am consciously letting the beater come off of the head. This is an 18" bass drum without a port hole on the front head. I am going for a round, open tone. I personally only play heel down when I'm feathering the bass drum on a swing tune on all four beats of the measure. All the best, John X

Sounds great. What size is the kick drum? I'm thinking about putting one on my Questlove breakbeats 16 inch drum. The texture coated single ply was too papery and thin sounding. You think that would work on there? The texture coated sounds great on the snare and the toms.

Ivan, Most US drummers consider the Bossa Nova a Latin drum beat. The typical categories are: jazz, rock, funk, and Latin. I know the Bossa Nova has its origins in Brazil. No offense intended. John X
