'Smooth & Buttery' is one of the greatest accolades you can give to a Guitar, it's one up from 'Smooth & Creamy' and its great its not embalmed in like a Toffee apple which some Epi's are, I'd be happy with that...

Nice one John. I splashed out on a Lazarus last year and I think it's tremendous. My mates have Gibsons (Tribute and Studio respectfully) and they can keep them.

Both great guitars. Whichever one gives you the most pleasure and sounds best, but if they are both equal keep the Gibson

I have a Epiphone Les Paul 59 Gold Top now for close to 3 years and still love it. I have to say coming from a cheap copy of a Les Paul it was like been given a full Gibbi. I had no problems, now I got a good amp its even better.

I too have a Gibson Tribute(a 2017 model) which I like and I have also seriously thought about a 59 Epi but one thing putting me off is the extra weight of the 59.So I'll be very interested in your upcoming comparison demo. If you could weigh them both that would be good.

A Gibson Guitar should never have anything to "question" in the quality control department. They charge plenty to warrant a "perfect" guitar. There is no excuse for those imperfections at the prices they charge. That said.... for those that have the itch to own a "True Gibson" (and I get that!) the Epiphone (or any other "copy") will never truly satisfy that itch.

That’s a big answer to one question lingering in my head. Curios still: do you feel the same about the Epi SG w/P90s vs a Gibson Special?
@BrentAdams
@BrentAdams Жыл бұрын
@@jaydjeffries personally, I've owned a few Gibson Guitars. I've gotten rid of every one after a "trial" period after realizing they just aren't worth it to me. Just my personal feelings after real trials of my own.... and like many folks, I really "wanted" to love them. I'm over that.....

Tried 4 1959 Epiphones today, 3 sounded pretty good, almost great, and one sounded ABSOLUTELY great, but there are several reasons I didn't buy it. All had frets that needed polished, none of them were setup well and the one that sounded terrific was damaged from the factory (looked like dropped) or at the Guitar Shop and the nut needed re-cut for the E-string and a knob was missing. Unfortunately, that was the one that I would want to buy. The "So What" is I wouldn't if you plan on buying one I would play in person and factor in a setup, fret polish, and/or level. The tone/sound was consistent across 3 with 1 being a jewel on my first run at playing these. I'll keep hunting for one, but I'm not as excited as I was previously. I wish the frets were taller, and stainless, but that wouldn't be period correct. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Man that's a beautiful looking and sounding guitar! I have the limited edition '1960 Tribute Plus' from 2014 it has same specs as yours but Rosewood board and Gibson Classic 57 pickups and it's still amazing! Excellent playing John!

Greetings from Baltimore, MD. I have one of these and I had the same initial reaction. This thing is fantastic. It sounds like a Gibson. That is the most important thing to me. I think they look as good as the Gibson. Of course, this is as close as I'll get to one of those classic '59 LPs but when I'm playing mine, in my mind, it is a '59. I enjoy your videos John, thank you.

Hi John, that looks and sounds a fantastic guitar. I'd love to make you an offer for that one but right now the budget is hardly enough for a new set of strings. It certainly ticks all my boxes. Sometimes it sucks to be poor.

@JRobsonGuitar im sorry if this may come across as a dumb question, but i have a harley benton sc550 deluxe with the stock roswell pickups and I would like to know if you feel and hear a substancial difference between the HB and the Epiphone 1959? Thruth being told, I have bought a lot of HB guitars and I think they are good instruments but after buying a Fender Player strat when i tried it for the first time I was immediately blown away by the differences in body resonance when unplugged and by how dinamic the pickups are. Long story short, i still feel that the HB St 62,and the others, Te 52 and SC550 are fine instruments, but they never felt the same again,not after trying the fender player. I must say that I am not a brand afficcionato, i dont care about brands, I just wanted to know if despite HB guitars being great for the money if theres a world of a difference in tone, playability?? Thanks in advance and my excuses for the long post..

Sweet demo of Epi 59 LP! I prefer the Burstbuckers over the 490s. Epi 59 LP is $1300CAD while Gibby Tribute LP is $1800CAD, I know I'd just pay the extra 30% for the authenticity. Your flaws with the Tribute probably warranted a return at the outset. My two Tributes are totally flawless, two of the best guitars I've owned.

In the last year I’ve seen 3 high profile guitarists play Epiphone at serious gigs; Joe Walsh, Tommy Thayer and George Thorogood. And I frankly didn’t hear any difference in sound from when they all played a Gibson at the same gig. For me, I love Gibson Les Pauls because they are played by Slash, Jimmy Page, Peter Frampton and Ace Frehley. And I do have a Gibson Studio that I like playing. I also have an Epiphone Slash, Tommy Thayer and Junior. And I enjoy playing those just as much. They all sound like Les Pauls through the Mesa Boogie Mark V amp I use.

Look forward to the comparison between the Tribute and Epi 59 . Would love a Gibson LP Standard but double the price of the tribute although unlike yourself I prefer a gloss neck , same with Strats , so maybe the Tribute isn’t for me ? I have Michael Kelly Patriot Decree and it dies a fair impersonation of a Les Paul but the neck pickup a bit dull . Cheers 🍻

Nice! Did I miss the unboxing video? I have the Epiphone '59 Les Paul and a couple of Gibson Les Pauls. You're correct, the Epi does not feel like a Gibby, but it sure sounds and plays like one. A lot of guys take a Scotch Brite pad or steel wool to their Gibson necks to get rid of the sticky nitro feel. With the Epiphone they would not feel the need to do so. Good luck on your decision, John!

Looking forward to your comparison between the Epiphone Les Paul 59 and the Gibson Les Paul Tribute. I have had the Epiphone 59 for about a year and really love it. However, often wondered if the Gibson Les Paul Tribute would 'scratch that itch' better? I have read so many reviews that criticise the pickups in the Tribute, whereas the majority seem to favour the Burstbuckers that are in the Epi as well as quite a few Gibson models. Will wait with interest as to what you feel?

all depends on how they feel to play of course, but the Epiphone looks better as looks more like a classic Gibson Les Paul

The guitar is cool, but it seems everybody is hooked on a name? The guitar here is the USA is $899. That is certainly a lot of money for an Epiphone Guitar! For $899, you know what i would get instead? For the same $899 I can probably find a good used Gibson Les Paul Studio for $899. They are out there, but you have to be patient. I would rather invest in that. It has "better" electronics and it has better re-sale value because it has the Gibson Logo on it. Just my two cents, mate. Thank you for posting this review.

The neck is made to be close to a '59. Many do not, me, like it. That's the part you're struggling with. 50's are seen as chunky by most. Long-term, you'll dislike this one, IMHO.

The Epiphone is really well spec’d, including having Gibson Burstbuckers; it’s built with care and hard to fault but it’ll always be an Epiphone … Nothing against Epiphones - I’ve got one and it says ‘Les Paul’ on the headstock but is it a ‘proper’ Les Paul? Not really, imho. I fell in love with it at first but over time, well you know the story … Still, it didn’t stop being a good guitar, so I’m keeping it to gig with again some time :)

Epiphone dining out on the mythos of the fabled 59 Les Pauls....I get it, and then again I don't get it. It sounds like a Les Paul, not an especially distinctive one, so you pays your money and makes your choice. Even the real deal 59's don't sound that special to me.

Keep the Gibson. Why?... because you've earned that ''Status'' guitar, playing gigs and building the channel etc... It's like buying a Ferrari it's annoying when you can't get your shopping in the boot, and the door trim feels like plastic, but you look at it and drive it and you think ''Wow I've got this'' I have an Epi Les Paul and it's great. Fine for me and my standard of playing but I'm not a professional.
