John, I am so grateful for this, I've been looking at several videos talking about borrowed chords but no-one ever really talks about why they chose those keys to borrow them from and here is the simplest most straightforward explanation on where to look. They're all named after other people. Pink Floyd: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council (Blues musicians) Elton John: Elton Dean (British jazz saxophonist) and John Lennon (a Beatle) Lynyrd Skynyrd: Gary Rossington's old gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.

@FoxinClogs. Don’t think you are quite right on the Elton John name. I read somewhere that the “John” in Elton John was from the late Long John Baldry who the then Reginald Dwight played keyboards for in Baldry’s band Bluesology. And Elton Dean (also from Bluesology) went on to join Soft Machine.

@markmiwurdz2248 You may be right about the Long John Baldry inspiration, though I remember years ago hearing it was John Lennon, which was also hinted at in the Rocket Man film and is backed up by Google Gemini.

It's about resonance and dissonance and working through what works and what doesn't. All thoe bands found out what works and delivered great songs.

Handy practical way of working it out on the guitar John, instead of using the circle of fifths, thanks. Did the Beatles & Pink Floyd know music theory? Well, sort of. The Beatles had George Martin for technical advice when required and Pink Floyd had Richard Wright who was, I believe, a classically trained pianist!

Develop your ears, I need that more, but they did develop by playing and listening. If it sounds good, cool. It will usually fit into known theory, but sometimes will be an exception, although usually those who do the exceptions well, are the exceptions.
