At the very beginning, when he's taking those baby bites out of the bricks, who else wants to grab the controls and take massive bites out of that building? Great videos! I'm hooked!

The operator is piddling around. This machine in a "get 'er done" operator's hands would have had that building down without all the unnecessary moves with little or no material in the clam shell. I got pissed just watching that clown show....

Thanks for another interesting video, John. It's clear that this machine is much better suited to this building than to the sturdy little one next to it. With a much weaker structure, and the need to separate materials and keep debris off the neighboring properties, this is just the right tool. It was clear in the first part of the video the strategy was to get the masonry off as cleanly as possible, pick out any larger metal pieces, and leave everything else inside the footprint of the building. But when he got to the narrower part of the building in the rear and he had to keep the debris off the adjacent property, he was willing to scrap the masonry debris out with a fair amount of wood contamination. Did they hand clean that, or pay a penalty at disposal for more contamination? It was interesting that the last part of the building was a later addition. The joint between the sections in the exterior wall was obvious, the original masonry rear wall was visible when he got to that point, and there were trusses instead of wood joists under the roof.

They haven't hauled away the brick yet, so I don't know how much effort they will make to clean out the wood scraps. On other jobs, I frequently see the hose guy put to work picking out the junk by hand.

I had to put this on double speed, the operator was very slow and kind of prissing about. Ok, he had the right attachment, the selector grab, but he was very jerky and quite random in what he saved. Some metal items were retrieved but other quite large ones went in the wood pile. Both steel and aluminium ducting has good scrap value. With the selector grab, you can even salvage stuff like copper piping and wiring. All in all a rookie operator.

This operator looks like he is trying to avoid hurting anything?? That said after ten minutes of watching, hopefully he gets better.
@constructionwatcher53813 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think your are sort of right. He's trying to save the company money by keeping the masonry clean of other debris so they can get a lower rate on dumping. Notice he peels off the masonry, pulls out the metal because it has salvage value, and pushes everything else into the middle.

Hey John, I still haven’t seen any type of activity at the old Port Covington BGE power plant. No excavators, shears, hammers, nothing. I’ll let you know when I do! As always, thanks for the great videos!
@JohnZWetmore3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate it. Sometimes it can take a while. The building in this video was vacated last winter, and they didn't bring in the excavator until July. If email works for you, I'm john@pedestrians.org Thanks.

@Hans your source? I can’t wholeheartedly believe with the redevelopment of Port Covington that building has much life left anymore. Prime real estate = prime profits for a developer.

I know a lot of people are saying why didn't they just go full force on this building. There is another building ATTACHED to the right of the building. One wrong yank could compromise the integrity of the attached building. Thats why they are being delicate. Its not a stand alone!!
