Love this band myself. I discovered them when many years ago Hammer magazine had a segment that focused on older obscure bands that never got their due. On that particular issue Cirith Ungol was the band highlighted. The art, band name drew me in immediately. I called my local record store to see if they could order any of their albums. Lucky they were able to get the first two that were re pressed in the late 90s. As far as favorite album of theirs? It’s hard I can’t really narrow it down to one. It floats between King and One Foot, but I love them all. They really are in my eyes one of the best American metal bands that never really broke. I definitely like them more than Manilla Road. Sorry Marty. I love M.R. Too but Tim Baker’s voice is so devastating it really brings their heaviness to the front. I always really seem to gravitate to bands with a really unique vocalist thats is either a love or hate with people.

I like them more than MR too. MR has some incredible albums but they also have so that are so-so (late 80s) and later ones get a bit samey. Granted, CU only has five albums but every one of them is loaded with killer tunes.

Cheers Kristian! I don't think they played within 800 miles of me on that tour :-( I might have them in my Top 5 Bands of all time; my only hesitation is that their discography is rather short (just 5 studio albums) to include on such a list.

@@letstalkmetal Well, I drove almost 1000 kilometers to see them the first time. Then the next year they played a two hours' drive from where I live, haha. Who would have thought, in 2010 or so, that Cirith Ungol would be playing an old deserted outdoors dance hall in the middle of the Swedish boreal forest just a few years later? Not me!

I had the pleasure to see them three times. Two of those shows are featured on the "I´m Alive" DVD. Rock Hard 2018, Chaos Descends Festival (Where the hell comes that name from???) Festival and Hammer Of Doom in 2017. That last mentioned show was mindblowing, 20 of their best songs in 1 hour and 40 minutes!!! I have a CU poster in the hallway right to the door to the musicroom so anybody who enters the realm knows what´s going on inside, hahaha....

@@albertampel4175 It's funny but it is easy for Americans to forget how large the USA is compared to most other countries. It takes me 45 minutes just to drive to work each day. To get to a city that might have a large metal tour stop at it is a 2 hours drive at least... and that city gets skipped by most big tours.

Cirith Ungol is legendary. Tim Baker rules. One thing I found really strange was, for all the hate the band has for Paradise Lost, that's the one their new album Forever Black sounds the most like. Plus the callback first song Legions Arise.
@letstalkmetal
@letstalkmetal 2 жыл бұрын
I think their hate for that album was just due to how the producer and record label treated them during that time. They've talked positively about the demos they recorded prior to recording PL, so I think they just hate how the material turned out due to interference from the label.

Hey Alan. Hoping you’d do a Cirith Ungol video and you delivered. Great stuff. This is a band I struggled with for years (all based on Baker’s voice) but during the pandemic I picked up Forever Black and never looked back. Don’t know what I was thinking in the past - Tim’s voice is perfect for this style. One Foot in Hell remains my favorite.

Killer episode. Concure on that trilogy on Paradise Lost. Probably my favorite ending of an album save for Into Glory Ride and Secret Treaties. Futhermore the riffs on Forever Black are killer. I was a little disappointed with the album upon first listenings. Fast forward three years and I love the album.

I was prepared to be massively disappointed by Forever Black but I joined the new Legion really quick when I heard it :) Fun comparison re: album endings: 'March for Revenge' and 'Astronomy' are stiff competition. This should get turned into a show idea sometime!

Their music has that 80s Horror Movie Soundtrack vibe. You can imagine Freddy Kreuger jamming the fuck out to their songs. Surprised their songs were not utilised in that way, guess they didn't have the right contacts.

Probably so. I think this band was just too heavy and monstrous to get much mainstream notice. They never fit cleanly into a category like Thrash or Death, which makes them great but probably hurt them in terms of exposure.

@@letstalkmetal Good thing you didn't remind me then. Ungol's vocals are a tough thing for me to embrace. I do have several albums on files to listen to, and I have found it to be not a horrible experience AFTER my ears adjust to tbe wailing and screaming. Its just that tortured screams from hell are not anything that I care to subject myself to. Full cavity barbed wire flossing is not a pleasant soundtrack in my sheltered world. EDIT: I've got KING OF THE DEAD playing right now. I really do love the music. The vocals are a tough sell for me, but in all honesty they're perfect for the music.
