Is it inappropriate or "bad form" to join more than one clan society?
If you join one, does that mean you can no longer honor the other clans of your heritage by wearing their tartans?

The thing is in today’s day and age is no longer about pledging loyalty. It’s about appreciation and admiration. There’s no longer pledging of loyalties as we would understand it back in the 1600s or 1500s. Nobody’s going to raise a banner pick up their shield and spear and sword and going to battle for a clan or clan chief. So it’s less about loyalties than about admiration and appreciation.

I'm so mixed, I have 4 different clans I could pledge to. 2 are subs of one and the 4th is completely separate. For me its not a dilemma for joining multiple clans, but more of a lack of money to support all 4 and have the kilts and all the accessories.

Clan membership is inherited by name. If you were part of every clan which you had a drop of blood from, then every Scot would be a member of every clan.

That might work except that you have some that came down a mother's or grandmother's line and thus may not carry a Scottish origin surname. I myself do not carry one of Scottish origin. However between a grandmother and my mother's family genealogy, you're looking at more than 2 different clans from a direct descent (Meaning not counting cousins.). One is Allison. Allison is a sept to more than one clan and that's just one surname in direct descent. All of those clans for Allison at one point or another, claimed that geographical area of land so "which one is the most local" doesn't historically apply, they were all local at some point.

Shadow37 yes- you can wear your grandmothers tartan or whatever you like really, what I mean is that you aren’t a member of a clan even though you may choose to wear that tartan.

@@em.142 This is true. I have a bunch as I collect family tartans and I am not a member of all of those clans. I would not qualify for Wallace but the point is that I wear it in honor of William Wallace. I just intentionally have no Clan Wallace pins and stuff out of respect.

In Florida, we have a group called the New World Celts (NWC) (see registered tartan). The purpose of this group is to support all Celtic cultures (Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Manx, Cornish, and Briton). In the past, we have sent the Dunedin Pipe Band to the Worlds, sponsored the inauguration of the Orlando Hurling CLG and Camogie, as well as individuals to compete in dance (Highland and Irish), piping, and drumming (local and abroad). Thanks Rocky and Eric! This really helped answer my question. Although I've got a German surname through my father (Fraley = Fröhlich), genetically I'm a big "mix of Macs" and have been wanting to honor and enjoy my Scottish heritage through joining and supporting a few clan societies. I've already joined two and I'll probably keep it to that. Thank God I don't have to worry about fighting for a clan chief! Lol.

This is the position I find myself in being from both the Anderson and Home lines. It was an easy decision for me since Lord Lyon refuses to acknowledge that Clan Anderson has a Clan Chief, I only consider myself a member of Clan Home and only wear their tartan and crest.

I had a dilemma about clans because of family but I resolved it by geography, Clan Paterson is a lowland clan but we are from Inverness and so are septed to Clan MacLaren so I joined Clan MacLaren and have no Paterson tartan at all. Both clans were thought to be "out" in the 45.

Does the concept of the cap-badge in signifying loyalty also apply to societies such as the Freemasons? Being a Master Mason, a member of the Scottish Heritage Society of Iowa, and following clan MacKenzie (My family believes we are a sept of clan MacKenzie) I now have many questions. Hopefully, I worded this correctly and it is somewhat coherent.

I'm a little late to the show, but felt like I could contribute. Traditionally your clan affiliation had almost nothing to do with your surname. You were a member of the clan by virtue of fealty. Usually where you lived had much more to do with your clan affiliation than your name. Thus if you lived on MacGregor land but were named Forbes and you declared fealty to the chief of MacGregor than you were clan MacGregor. Sometimes people who lived for generations in the same clan lands would change their name to the chiefs out of loyalty, but were of no actually blood relation at all. Thus you could have numerous unrelated families with the same surname or numerous surnames all in the same clan (septs). Only in modern times has your surname been your sole indicator for clan membership. Primarily because clan associations have arisen to preserve the heritage of a given clan. Clan membership is by birth or fealty, clan association membership is purely administrative. You can be a member of several clan associations, but are the member of one single clan.

I was wondering about the protocol on this subject. I am a direct descendant to Clan Houston, but they married into Clan MacDonald, so therefore to the greater Clan Donald. My childhood friend, and still best friend turned out to be a cousin of mine from the Clan MacDonald side. Small world, right? I have been searching high and low for a Clan Houston kilt and/or kit, but I can't find any that are made. I can find the fabric codes for ancient and modern, but it is going to cost me a small fortune to have it made. If y'all can tell me where I could find one I would be soever grateful.

My ancestors made it easy for me. James Watson and his wife, Mary Gibson have last names that both ended up being septs of Clan Buchanan. Therefore since Buchanan now has a chief, its only appropriate I wear the Buchanan tartan. Also because the Watson and Gibson clans are defunct and without a chief. I don't feel as if I am "betraying" Watson or Gibson.

@Leo Proctor It has been confirmed though emails with The Clan Buchanan Society International. I told them what I found in my lineage and they confirmed through their own genealogists that I have blood ties. My family, maternal and paternal, have gone to great lengths to build and preserve our family tree(s) for generations. I recently sent in my application for mine/my family's membership. Also, not to be rude, but I dont really need to "prove" anything to anyone. I know who I am and where my roots are, especially since it's been confirmed. To explain would take entirely too long to reword the email I received that is lengthy. It is not as simple as just saying who I'm related to. I would also have to explain the history that accompanies my lineage. The satisfaction is not for anyone else but myself and my family. For future reference, take note that it is not good etiquette to call out a complete stranger and ask them to explain the details of their lineage...as if you are "know all be all" gatekeeper of my heritage.

My maternal grandmothers surname was Faulds, a sept of Clan Boyd. In 1875 her family were cleared, from their Sutherland home. They moved to Dundee and area. She became a Clan Elder of a Clan I've unfortunalely forgotten. In 1903 she sadly died, giving birth to my father, in Dundee. My dad died when I was nine, its a long time since I've heard her story, and I've suffered a brain hemorrhage recently, but the Clan she was an elder of, wasn't Clan Boyd. Realistically in the 1890s, they wouldn't be a conflict of interest. If I was her, my first loyalty would be to the clan, to whom I was an elder. Sorry Clan Boyd, as I can only claim to wear Boyd tartan, through my grandma! Her adopted clan, would be a district clan near Dundee.
