Thank you for showing everyone how to do this. I use Elmer's Washable School Glue to hold it all perfectly in place (iron it to dry) & sew it in place by machine. Totally washes out. You made this look easy & it is! The glue is a game changer. I appreciate anyone that takes the time to make a video to help so many others! THANK YOU!

If you iron one strip in half and sew the raw edges to the quilt square, you have a finished edge to sew down. Saves lots of time and looks nice.

I have done the second method many times. It works great to glue the sassing down with washable school glue and then touch it with an iron to set it. It stays in place perfectly so you can do your top stitching. It washes right out and leaves no trace.

If you cut a 2” piece folded on the front,raw edges to the edges and put a 1”piece on the back and add you next block to the wrong side piece both seams are covered when you fold over the front piece and sew down with a decorative stitch both.

Fold the top strip in half before you sew it onto the front. Then when you fold it over to attach the second block it's already folded.

The best video I have found for quilting as you go. I only have a basic sewing machine and I can't sew massive quilts because the fabric just won't fit. This way, I can make the blocks and then sew them together afterwards. I will be doing the hand stitch one, as that would be the easiest for me. Thank you for such a great, helpful video that got straight to the point and didn't waffle on for ages before we got down to the sewing bit.

OMG, you just took away all my fear of doing a QAYG quilt. I belong to the FACEBOOK QAYG group page but have never actually made one yet. I've made several reqular quilts but I have always had this nervousness about committing myself to making a QAYG and then being completely disappointed with it and wasting all that fabric and time. With this technique I'm now going to make my King size quilt that I've been procrastinating about for 3 years. I can now pull out the beautiful black and white fabrics I've been saving and make my log cabin quilt for my bed. Thank you for sharing this with us all.

I use 1 inch on the back and 1 1/2 inch on the front, fold the front piece in half before sewing and I don't have to worry about turning the seam under before I sew it down on the machine.

@@loriberlin9712 yes! I do this all the time by making the front sashing wider and folding it exactly in half , you can finger press the fold then use a light iron and press the sashing down and go right along the edge with your presser foot.

I've done quite a bit of raw edge applique with the blanket stitch and it looks great! Your "spring" quilt is going to look beautiful with all those bright colours. Very nice job!!

When you are folding that flap on the sew line use washable school glue!! Works like a charm!! Great video, thanks

I think using the blanket stitch along the already sewn edge would tie the visual effect together and keep the technique a secret. Love your video teaching method. Please make more.

Love your video. I would suggest you press the seams before you attach sashing to the blocks. this way they will be even and quick. You can also make a folded one and this way its all tucked in. Dang I love your video, such a great job. thank you

I love the machine stitching, I have a disease called CIDP and hands are numb and no strength and get fingers that will spasm and lock. I am only learning, I haven't made anything yet. Just watching videos so I can learn. Thank you so much, just found you on here.

Great job! It looks so fresh and modern. I think what put me off this method before was all the ugly dark blue or black strips that people used and it made the quilts look old fashioned. Alisha LOVE THIS VIDEO!! New subbie here. rang notification bell as well. want to make a suggestion for you for your style where you have to line it up with the other stitch line. Of course, iron it down but to get it to stay...Washable school glue. line it up gluing a thin bead as you go and then place a book covered in foil on it to hold it down. you can do several blocks at a time and by the time you finish your fourth blocks set the first should be dry. You get the idea, I hope. Your instructions are lovely. I have a log cabin denim quilt I am doing and want to quilt as I go with denim strips I can do this method I am putting an anti-pill fleece back on it at least that is the plan, if this method will not work with the disparity of fabric perhaps will just back with denim plain squares quilted will go so much faster than the log cabin. Bless you all over the place and back again for giving me a solution to do this with!!! WOuld love to see you repeat this video while actually doing it. I can slow it down if I have to. Love the giggles from your peanut gallery in the background Did my heart so much good. Love it! Thank you again!

Im doing denim on front alternating with shirt fabric with flannel as batting and flannel backing. Feels thick at the seam. Your method covers. Will see if it works with blanket stitch. You didn't say what sz stitch.. Fingers crossed. MJ

Great review and clear explanation of connecting QAYG blocks. I have a QAYG quilt in the UFO's waiting to be finished for my mom (who is getting older by the day and I want her to get it before she dies!) I've saved this vid to my favourites and I'll soon be taking out Mum's quilt and finishing it. Perhaps for Mother's Day (American Mother's Day in May, not British Mother's Day in March.) OH! O>M>G! Dear Alisha, you just pointed out something so awesome! LOL I've always complained that my 1984 Singer SM didn't have a marking/grove to show where to align for 1/4 inch. I tried things to mark the 1/4" but .... Nothing impressed me much with these methods. I never thought of moving my needle to left or right before. I'm soooo daft. Geez! Thank you for pointed out this obscure machine capability, while attaching the first 2 blocks! It wasn't in the Owners Manual. So sad. 1/4" here I come! FREEDOM!

I find that cutting a wider front strip and ironing it double and then sewing it on with the back strip makes the finishing neater as well as easier than trying to fold it over twice when doing the final stitching.

This sounds great. So you lay it down with the fold at the seamline below it. Do you pin the fold down? Is that how you control it at the machine? It would be a heavy project with all the batting done for an entire row and growing larger with each row.

@@cvan1075 The raw edges of the folded one is matched with the raw edges of the quilt block and the joining strip and all three are sewn together. You proceed to join the two blocks with the single layer strip as shown in the video. Then you can flip the folded and sewn strip and sew it down without having to turn over a raw edge for the last step. It really not any more bulky. You only have one extra layer of cotton in the seam but it is much nicer to sew down the final seam without having to try to fold over the final raw edge. Your single strip is still cut to one inch, but your other strip will be cut to two inches and folded in half. Found a video that may help if my explanation doesn't make sense. Oh, thank you!!! I'm just starting in the hobby, and have done two quilts, both of which were very difficult to machine quilt due to their size ( 45x70 and 110x80). You've made things a lot easier. Now I can make either large blocks and quilt them individually, or gather several smaller blocks together, then quilt, and finally join by the method you demonstrated.. I am guessing that this method could be used on long strips also. At least strips are much easier to manipulate than a whole quilt.

if you use a washable glue stick. Fold, glue, iron it will tack in place so you can sew it. It wont bunk up your machine.

Hi I like your blocks. I've been doing QAYG for a while and learned to do the 2 strip method with one strip folded in half, like binding then you don't have to struggle with foldding that narrow piece of fabric.

@Frau Crow Try this video;...watch at timestamp 3:27...she used a wider strip of fabric, folds in half, align's the raw edges and sews the strip on to the block....then when you flip the strip over, you are sewing on a folded edge....that is sewn in, no need to try and hold it/fold as you sew.
