Thank you so much for your post. Dr. Spina (I know you prefer Dre, but I'm Canadian, so that's a tough one for me). I cannot wait to take the FRA course in Toronto this April. I know my assessment skills can become significantly better and I just want to say how appreciative I am of your work. Thank you.

Christian Askari was also supposed to be in Toronto for the FRA :(

Dr. Spina, can you please clarify whether you think that pattern training is still a recipe for plateau/injury when it's performed in a context of movement diversity (varying the patterns, adding microvariations)? Would this not be an effective approach to training movement and optimizing joint capsule function along the way?

I love the way he explains movement. I think his view of joint health and how a healthy joint becomes a better filter and thus makes it easier to learn a pattern, brilliant! I can’t wait to take more of his courses!

People are saying now that the movement patterns of 20 years ago are totally wrong. What do you think They will be saying 20 years from now About what we are teaching today?

JonTate7 they’ll likely be saying that it doesn’t comport with the most recent evidence and, logistically speaking, only roughly 20% of Americans are meeting exercise guidelines per ACSM and the introduction of these ideas and narratives without evidence to substantiate them is likely causing more harm than good probability-wise; from the literature, we’d probably be more successful in getting people healthier by encouraging them to train as opposed to discouraging and threatening them with false notions of ‘joint optimization’ to sell a system that’s more applicable to people who are athletes or hobbyists of specific sports (if even that at the very least, and still unlikely so) based on the notion that they will injure themselves if they don’t and because their “shoulder isn’t moving like a shoulder” which is ambiguous by design. Would love to have a discussion about this with Spina but I fear he’s indoctrinated in these notions and narratives as evident from previous interactions.

Michael Karayan 1- have you ever give it a try? Have you taken the FRC seminar? If not, I would advise you to. I don’t want to get into a debate, i usally don’t comment on youtube. But the Functional range system did a lot for me, my health and my career. For the comment about What people are going to say 20 yrs from now, yes it will probably be different because we are only starting to understand the human body. It’s simple evolution. Dr. Spina is using What science is telling us right know and applies it with his own expérience and common sense. The system evolve as science gets better. For your argument that les than 20% of American are unfit, and that those kinds of informations are scaring people away from training. Do you really believe that? If its really the case, here is one principle they tough me. 1- determine physical capacities 2- program training within those capacities 3- program additionnel work to expand capacities where desired/needed 4- repeat With that being said, as a boxing coach, strength and conditioning coach and manuel therapist, my goal is to make sure my clients have the prerequisite for What they want to do. This equal in more specific training, which they really appreciate because they don’t feel like I give the same thing to everybody. They feel More confident in training because they are seeing faster results since most of work it’s within their capacities. They are extra motivated because they have additional work to expand they capacities. Lastly they train year long because we are mitigating injury. I have 14 years as a PT and never was I better for my clients and athletes health and fitness. The human body We evolve quickly and it’s has have changed in ways that we don’t necessarily have the prerequisite to do what Homo sapiens were meant to do. We simply are trying to help people move better while trying to counter/mitigate evolutionary mismatch problems. I don’t mean to be rude or arrogant, I’m just giving you my opinion ✌️
