Great movie. I'm not sure if many have noticed how important the character the sister-in-law Bincy was. To me I feel that that the idea for both muders ignited by Bincy to Joji. First time it was in the kitchen when she got annoyed after Joji asked for cold water. When Joji asked what happened she said that they can't go their own way until the father is alive. The second time it was in the lounge room when they were discussing about the partitioning of the properties and she said it would be good if Jomon wasn't there as he's the one creating trouble.

You really should have eulogized Fa Fa more in the review, BR...he deserves more than a stray comment on his weight loss!!🙄 I can think of so many scenes where he absolutely sparkled, bringing out the pained character that he is, making me want to reach out to him while laughing at his antics, being stupefied by his deceit and recklessness and feel like shaking him up for unnecessarily sticking his neck out to kill the man the whole family hates, all at the same time....what a complex guy! The scenes where he tells his father, 'heck, even I don't know what to expect of myself', when he nonchalantly walks around knowing his father is dead, when he mumbles, 'one of your kingdom's subjects' to that tyrant dad AND that scene when the dad is being brought back home from the hospital the first time around and Joji tries to get involved in the act of helping carry him, when being completely sidelined and ignored, because he is of no use to anyone anyway!!! Bhai wah!! BR, you really really should have spent a few whole minutes in sheer approbation of this fab actor!! And folks....any thoughts on the ending? What do you think happened....surely it wasn't just a suicide attempt gone wrong??🤔

@arrock1883 жыл бұрын
I think technically Joji is a superior film. Bijibal's score and songs were often the Achilles heel of Dileesh Pothen films. What Justin Varghese has done here is brilliant. However, in terms of narrative brilliance I would rate them Mahesh > Thondimuthal > Joji. It's a terrific recommendation, though and Dileesh should be proud of it.
@Varun_thayat3 жыл бұрын
@@arrock188 Hey, I want to acknowledge the flawless narrative which carried Mahesh and thondi. But for me what makes Joji even more special are the dimensions in the plot and how layered all the characters were. No doubts the previous 2 films had superb performances but in this one, Pothettan pulled off a much bigger feat by getting the best out of all the characters, smoothly taking us through the highly complex plot which Syamettan designed!

I respect your opinion and your observations. But i have to disagree to some of the opinions. First of all, we should not compare it with Dileesh Pothans previous movies. Both of them are movies are brilliant, but completely different from JOJI interms of Genre and entertainment nature I don't think Dileesh made an effort to make it a master piece or classic, but the dramatic and tragic nature of the movie might have made you feel so. This movie is a wonderful example of how a character should be defined and portrayed. Also, i believe that the complete essence or soul of this movie could be absorbed only by a Malayali. The reason is that, the character's portrayed in this movie and also the society outside that family is only completely understandable and relatable to malayali audience. I guess my point is clear to all the malayalis who have watched the movie. We have definitely seen a kuttappan or Joji in our neighborhood, or we might be on of them. To other audience, some of you might feel a bit disappointed with the movie because of the same reason. A small note to people who have not watched Joji yet and especially to those who have watched other movies from Dileesh Pothen, Joji is definitely not a comedy entertainer, but rather a crime drama and more over a tragedy. Try to watch it as fresh as it could be and i strongly believe that this movie will take you along its journey. One of the brilliance as mentioned by BR, we will definitely look inside us and see if there is a Joji within us. And to be honest, i am a part Joji, a part Jomon and a part of me is Bincy and the rest i am defined by the so called society in the movie. The movie is definitely a good one and i believe it will get enough appreciation over time as one of brilliant inspiration from Macbeth.

Don't compare the actor or directors previous work with this one. Talk for what this movie stands for. There is absolutely no need to tell ppl that it is a must watch, but there is also no need to discourage ppl not to watch it and or take their spirit away. Great movie, writing and screenplay. The father figure theme is too repetitive . See the kannada film 'Thithi' for a better 'Funeral Drama'.

Is it a curse for a film not to have good critics? In my opinion, I request Film Companion to bring in a new person as soon as possible to evaluate Malayalam movies. Whether it is 'Thondimuthal', 'Maheshinte Prathikaaram' or 'Joji', it should be evaluated with an understanding of the historical, social, geographical and political context of Kerala. Baradwaj Rangan is a complete failure in that regard. In Malayalam, Manish Narayanan is able to evaluate our film. Dear Baradwaj Rangan, this is not the way to evaluate such films. Always great to see your take on films but don't agree that there's a deliberate effort to make a classic. Yes, the writing is decidedly designed to deviate from the classic Macbeth. One more aspect - you can still enjoy it as a standalone film without having any knowledge of Macbeth. And I think that's quite a remarkable feat. Performances are top notch - Unnimaya is excellent with her looks and physicality. Baburaj' s physical resemblance to his father and Fahad 's complete lack of it are sharply etched out. The drone shots of the vast rubber plantation are quite thematic and the final credit rolls with the entire household and fields are quite unique !

Fahaad killed it (pun unintended). It just fails to amaze me with that psychotic innocent look on his face and the way he uses his eyes to convey the full scene...sheer brilliance. Bincy nailed the role as being his passive motivator into perdition. BR must not compare everything to everything and come to a conclusion because every movie is an individual work of art . One must have an elastic mind to play with a plot and develop on it. Macbeth may still not be the best version inspite of being the original. Experiments lead to success. BR MUST UNDERSTAND THAT.

Dominant father or mother figure...often insulted by close friends and family. While he wanted money and property like others in the family... I felt its rather the fact that he was often dominated by others and insulted that triggered him to do what he did more than others. He did not kill just for money.... Disappointed with the review.. there are so many layers in the film.. you simply summed it up it didn't gel well..it doesn't have to.. this is a melancholic film with a mood of slow burn..

Sorry Sir..but this is a masterpiece with great direction, great BGM, great lead performance, great supporting performances, great cinematography and great screenplay with great writing. Some of the conceived scenes are too good for indian cinema standards..

One other trend that I am observing among these "top reviewers" is that they try hard and call out some average scenes as phenomenal, and this is for big stars only. And after they've covered all aspects they say that the story is what is driving this movie and not the protagonist. Hating this trend of some reviewers where they are trying to break the masala entertainment and making the script as king. Obviously we want that too, but can't happen all the time. So let some genres continue and give happiness to their fans, it's ok. Not every movie should be the way you want it to be. Thanks.

I don't understand why he acts out quote and unquote when he says "classic".For,it is a classic stuff.Saying that the director's two previous ventures are more satisfying than joji shows the critic's inability to fully appreciate the basics of Greek tragedies.

Sir, JOJI is not an fully adaptation of macbeth like maqbooth. Dileesh pothan who has done pg in drama was very found of this play. Shyam pushkaran portrays the essence what shakespere want to say and their emotional layers.. He placed these layers in a brilliant way. Dileesh pothan and his writer only conviction to say has macbeth message is still relevant.
