So you are correct now in what he does, BUT he does use the Blushda a lot. His top influences does include Tony Williams, and he has said at a clinic in 2011 (Sofia, which is a video you can find here on KZbin) that it's a lick that he "can't not do." It's a significant part of his vocabulary, and probably a pretty cool lick to have in any vocabulary.
@NerismaStudios9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Scott Last thing I would add, which for the purpose of this video probably doesn't really affect anything, but the tune that this is from is "Glitter," and while it can be played in 3/4 time (and when Jojo solos during the tune, he clearly is feeling 3/4 time), it's a tune that is felt in 6/8. All the evidence you need for that is the tune, which you can buy on Nerve's bandcamp site. Again, it's not worth changing the video over, because this is probably easier to notate in 3/4 than in 6/8, and because Jojo changes the feel between 3/4 and 6/8 so often when soloing over this tune, it's probably more correct this way.
@abbdrums9 жыл бұрын
Yea, the blushda is pretty universal now among all the prominent fusion drummers so I will eventually find a better example of it and make an episode out of it. And, for the transcription, I kept bouncing back and forth between using 3/4 and 6/8 but the 3/4 just comes out easier to read so I just stuck with that. Thanks for the comments!
@NerismaStudios9 жыл бұрын
+Austin Burcham I admit I'm still working on the Blushda myself, PLUS, Jojo does actually tend to smooth the Blushda out sometimes when he plays. Also, in reference to the previous video, you'd notate a "smoothed" blushda as a 4:3 tuplet. Four 16ths in the place of three. I remember seeing that notation before in a transcription of Matt Greiner's drum part in "Composure," and if you were to play this lick in the "incorrect" way from the last video, it would be a 4:3. And you're welcome dude! Hey, drummers gotta talk to each other, you know?

Austin I left a reply on one of your Jo Jo Mayer videos. Fantastic work. Maybe this is at your website under each transcription but could you just mention the BPM the artist plays each fill or groove? I have an app that gets close to the BPM but an exact number would be great. At the tempos of some of these just 3 or 4 BPM can make or break me. I like to practice at 5 BPM faster than the artist and then bring it back. KEEP UP THE FANTASTIC work please. Maybe Yes Gates of Delirium one day?

Hi Austin Burcham, I'm shandon from the philippines I already used a logic pro x app for the first time, and I used this for my drum transcription purposes. I wish you could do a tutorial on the tradional grip, I've watched so many tutorials on it but none of them show how to change certain things at higher speed caus im pretty sure by watching you and jojo (and many others) that they are throwing and catching at higher speed but sort of bouncing motion?
@abbdrums9 жыл бұрын
I would highly recommend Jojo's DVD on hand technique. It's called "Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer." It breaks any and all aspects of hand technique down in more detail than I could even fathom. I may still do a video on traditional grip, though... I just switched back to it recently so it's still a little rusty but maybe down the line I'll get to it. Thanks

Hi Austin, I just subbed to your channel and I like your way of teaching. Have you ever done a tutorial in setting up Logic to chart drum set notation? How did you get Logic to map out perfectly that audio file of Jo Jo's playing? Or did you do it manually? I've tried mapping Logic and got close, but some of the kit components, such as an open hi-hat, are not showing up in the notation. I will check out your videos if you already did a tutorial. If not, would you consider doing one? Thanks
