Did you pick up on the fact that Captain K and Freddy were lovers? They both had as much to lose as anyone and their uniforms at the end displayed the pibk triangle marking them out as gay. They literally went out loud and proud. With him covering for the mum and the girl, prhanising his towns defence and then ensuring Jojo was safe, i feel that he was the true hero of this movie.

It's very loosely based on a book that Taika's mother read and briefly discribed to him. But basically it was just enough to be get the creative ball rolling.

This is a work of fiction. But, it is set, obviously, within an historic context. While most reactors are amused by the scene with all the kids and old people fighting in the streets, the reality is that by the end of the war, Germany was asking its citizens to come out and defend their towns and neighborhoods, as the military was, for all practical purposes, completely devastated. So while it's a parody and looks a bit funny, the reality of it wasn't funny at all. During WWII the Axis powers, in addition to causing the deaths of over 70,000,000 people worldwide, destroyed countless acres of cities, towns, historic architecture, works of art, people's homes, food supplies and so much more. Non-military citizens all over Europe were close to starvation for a while after WWII. This movie is a work of genius, balancing parody of war with realities of war. The Hitler Youth were real. The civilians fighting was real. The resistance and its supporters were real too.

I haven't yet watched this reaction (I'm about to), but none of the reactors I've previously watched seemed "amused" by the young and elderly being conscripted to fight. Their reactions were much more like seeing the young and elderly having to fight in the LOTR: The Two Towers ("Most have seen too many winters." "Or too few."). It was a very somber reminder of the desperate and hopeless situation they were in.
@firstcityviews
@firstcityviews Жыл бұрын
@@michaelhoward142 I don't remember if I laughed at any of those moments but if I did it wasn't because I think it's funny that old people and children had to fight, it's because this movie did a great job of illustrating the absurdity of the situation.

Yeah, in the Battle of Berlin, 11-12 year old boys were fighting and if they tried to run, they'd be shot if they were found to have bullets. The main ones I don't think were expected to fight were women and girls, which is one of many reasons the Nazis really did not see the Soviets being able to dominate. Women straight up didn't fight, yet as they encroached into Russia, women were sniping them from trees not even including the antics of the Night Witches.

It took me some time afterward to understand that the reason it worked so well was that all of what we were laughing at was not funny in the traditional sense, but absurd - that children would be trained for and sent into war, that adults would have children "for a cause", train children to hate, kill, spread and be indocrinated into wildly illogical propaganda . We laugh because it seems ludicrous,and yet it all happened. We have the distance from that history to find it all nonsensical - but it happened. The Hitler character was the indocrination personified n the child's mind, put there by a hateful movement and the adults that children trusted. That is why it was so satisfying to see him give H the boot at the end....he was ridding himself of the last of the bigotry and hate put there by the adults.

Some of the funny things is sad when you look at it from another perspective. When JoJo ask his imaginary friend Hitler of he thinks he is ugly and Hitler answer yes it is really JoJo thinking he is ugly. I know some people is confused about Hitler wearing the native american feather headdress but that is because Hitler was a fan of wild west stories and the national socialists did like a lot of whet the US did like the Jim Crow laws.

I love how expressive you are! Loved the film also watched it recently and started looking for reactions! Every character is unique and the transition from comedy to drama was done so beautifully! Something that people have not mentioned on the comments is that captain K and his lover were a secret couple and by the end of the film they are shown wearing those pink triangles on their uniform that Nazis used to stick on gay people to mark them as unworthy or whatever, but here they are, knowing that they would most likely die and chose to wear them proudly. Captain K helped the kid in many ways, because he promised to his mother to look after him. He even hurried home after his mother was hanged to check on him (carrying his mother's bike perhaps). He was not a Nazi at heart but he was forced to pretend to be one, could also be one of the reasons he stayed back and did not go to war.

You could tell he had reservations about the war even early on in the film. I picked up on the fact they were lovers but totally missed the pink triangles. I loved how his lover was just shooting off at nothing and not even looking where he was firing.

jojo rabbit is my fav movie of probably all time; waititi is so intelligent in terms of the balance between genres & the film is always enjoyable but also jarring to watch. it's based on the book "caging skies" by christine leunans (i read it a few years ago) but is entirely different in tone... most of the plot is different too. i love taika and all his films (and i appreciate dry kiwi humour lol) but i think this one is prob his greatest work thus far

@@firstcityviews I think that a lot of the misinformation the Nazis spread really was out there and ridiculous & part of where the humour of this movie comes from- the "Heil" scenes are funny because of how dumb and pointless it is to have to repeat that so much, it did a good job of telling the story from a Nazi Youth perspective while very clearly laughing *at* them not *with them.
