Not many French-born English kids can pull off a German accent so well as Roman Griffin Davis did which is weird considering Germany, England and France were all Germanic countries that used to be controlled by the Roman and then Byzantine Empire before they had their own.
@mardroidmk1393Ай бұрын
@@aspieanarchist5439 our accents are quite different though, and France isn't germanic. The Frank's (a Germanic tribe influenced by the Romans)were dominant there for a while, even giving the country its name, but they were Latin speakers, and the French people are predominantly gaulish ancenstry, I believe. The French language is of Latin origin with the original gaulish celtic words mixed in. And the anglo-saxons migrated from Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands over 1000 years ago. Accents change and diverge in much less time. Yes, he does a decent job with a German accent. I find it amusing that his friend (Yorki?) speaks with an English accent, yet its cute and kind of works too with his slightly odd enunciation.

This is easily one of if not my favorite movies all time. I think it does so many things so well, balancing drama with comedy and bringing light to a really dark topic. The symbolism of so many scenes, like the windows after he finds his mother looking like the eyes of his German neighbors watching without helping ending with the only person who consoles him ends up being the same person that was being made out to be a monster ( Jews). There is also the "heil hitler" joke when the gestapo shows up and after the third time they introduce them selves you are tired of the "joke" but then it happens again when Elsa introduces herself but this time you definitely aren't laughing its suddenly tense almost reminding you that while yes this is a comedy these events were real and terrifying and there is a point when jokes stop being jokes and become reality so be aware. I just love this movie so happy to see your reaction to it, it is an all time great in my opinion.

As tragic as Rosie's death is, Captain K's might hit me even harder. He's a surprisingly complex character. A career soldier (who genuinely loves and excels at soldiering), but who obviously has no allegiance to Hitler's ideology, who has been relegated to jobs pushing propaganda he doesn't believe in. It's no wonder he seems to half-ass these assignments, and that his role in the book burning scene is to stand sullenly in the background drinking. It's left ambiguous how involved he may be in the resistance, but it's implied he knows of Rosie's involvement. And in the final "defense" of the city, it's apparent that his intention is nothing other than to go out in a blaze of glory, but his own definition of glory: A flamboyant uniform of his own design, fabulous makeup, guns fired harmlessly skyward, alongside his barely-kept-secret lover (I'm ashamed that I somehow didn't catch the obvious indications that he and Finkel are lovers on my first viewing). In his final scene, Finkel is conspicuously missing, and Captain K is holding his cape, which is absolutely heartbreaking. And in what he knows are his last few moments, he keeps it together for JoJo, and instead of letting JoJo try to get him off the hook, he sacrifices himself to make sure he's safe, and goes to join Finkel with a smile on his face. He perfectly exemplifies the running theme of "doing what you can".

Captain K is by far one of the best characters. If you watch a second time you’ll notice … - that captain k was obviously gay. - he has a look of disgust on his face when the kids were burning the books - when JoJo asks about what he should do if he finds a Jew and asks about mind control which is what was in the propaganda, Captain K quickly brushes past it telling him that he doubts it’s true and tries to change the subject. - when showing up to Jo Jo’s house when the gustapo? Spelling? was there he was carrying Jojo‘s mom‘s bike, he knew she was already dead and rushed to make sure they didn’t find the girl and take JoJo in as a traitor. - when they were looking at the YooHoo Jew book and Elsa said it was hers Captain K shoots a knowing look at Jojo because ge knows it’s his. - His extravagant outfit in the end battle is decorated with pink triangles which was the sign the nazi made gay people wear. He was out and proud I’m his last moments ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 The thought and care that was put into writing and making this movie was I incredible.

Jojo's mom said she never looked a tiger in the eye? That's not true, she looked the Nazi regime (tiger) in the eye trying to help people. The guy that covered for Jojo and Elsa knew something happened to the mother, so he rushed over there after he found her bike without her in town. When he comes in the door, you can see it with him. He came to cover for Jojo and to protect her kid not knowing about the Jewish girl. You could see the surprise on his face seeing her for the first time. First time I saw the movie, I was just like you. I was shocked at the subject matter, but it was beautifully balanced. The fact that the guy that played H (Taika Waititi) wrote and directed this film. It was based on a book from 2008

One of the things I hadn't realized until after I'd thought about it for a bit: Captain K. (Sam Rockwell) shows up at Jojo's house during the gestapo scene because he knows Rosie has been arrested and is probably guilty. That's why he's out of breath when he arrives and makes up an excuse about stopping by to visit when he's never visited before, and why he becomes so pushy with wanting to see "Inga's" papers. It just made me love that character even more.

That part when they show her shoes got me, hard. I at first thought it would be wack but after watching it, such a good movie…

I wish they had a movie where Simon Pegg and Nick Frost played the adult versions of characters played by the kids in these movie.

I put this movie off for a long time because I knew it was going to make me cry. But, thank goodness, it leaves you on a high note.

Both Taika Waititi and Scarlett Johansson are Jewish, and after an extensive casting process, he decided to play AH himself, figuring, "What would be a bigger F. You to Hitler than having him portrayed by a Jew of colour?"

If this movie doesn't make you at least feel like crying, you're not a proper human.

Criminally underrated film. So well done. The characters are all great.

Doesn't matter how high its ratings get, it would still be underrated.

As you point out, Sam Rockwell's character does a few things in the movie that demonstrate true heroism. (No, not the same brand of heroic resistance we learn about Scarlett Johansson, to be sure.) These are just tiny moments in the film, passing by as incidental plot points. Not much is made of it, but his actions manage to save the lives of two children. I like to hope in true Nazi Germany, similar acts of anonymous heroism were performed dozens of times a day across the country, by nameless, forgotten people. Some were caught, punished, executed, while others were fortunate to escape undetected, never to be known. While this film has a few different themes, what hits hardest for me is how this film is a tribute to all of those unknowns - names and faces forgotten but defiant in the face of true evil. The people we all hope we ourselves would be. David Bowie's "Heroes" is the perfect song to sum up the film; dancing, in the end, upon the fraudulent front of fascism.

Indeed! Captain K actually saves JoJo twice. First, when he helps Elsa avoid being captured by the Gestapo (hiding a Jew in your house was a serious offence) and then at the end.
