It sounded the best of the four through my iPhone speakers to me - the Marshall sounded too forward, the JBL too crunchy? Tinny? and the Bose too covered - but, it’s through my iPhone. The hassle of their “ecosystem” though would make me want to throw it out my window haha. Great review thanks. Wish you spent a teeny bit more time on each speaker audio test before switching. My brain is too slow

For the $, SONOS is FANTASTIC!!! Once you have your SONOS set up they are SO easy to use. SONOS also makes its OWN mesh Wi-Fi. Due to this you don't get lag between speakers that are playing the same thing like you do with other whole home Wireless systems. It is also SOOOO easy to link different rooms together for like a party, then unlink when done. And as I said when linking them due to it's own Mesh Network, there is NO LAG from speaker to speaker.

For me, the Sonos roam has been a great product. I have two and use them in a stereo pair. I will freely admit that the app isn’t perfect and using an app outside of the Sonos app while in stereo pair can result in some clunkiness, including only one speaker playing and then the other one joining in 15 seconds later. However these issues are things I can live with given the sound quality (particularly the bass, which I have turned up in the EQ settings). I also appreciate how clear and full the sound is on these. Battery life is also excellent. If I have one critique with your review it would be your comment about the looks. So long as it sounds good I think that should far outweigh the look factor, especially with your review model being the black color - I find it hard to critique such an inoffensive and very much not outlandish design the roam employs. But I must say the sound comparison was well executed so I appreciate that!

The speaker offers versatility for WiFi and Bluetooth. Did you use the EQ settings? Everyone knows Sonos is known for their eco system. They have always been that way from the start. Just curious.

When he noticed Sonos spelled backwards in the first five seconds I turned the review off. This is elementary to every audiophile. The value in SONOS is the WiFi connection. WiFi is better when you need better audio quality, a longer range, and fast speeds. None of which he probably mentioned because right off the bat I knew he was going to give a half ass/clearly bias review.

A single Sonos Roam lacks bass compared to a Flip 6, SoundLink Flex, or Emberton. However a stereo pair of Sonos Roam speakers sounds better than a stereo pair of anything else at its size, and the Emberton sadly does not support stereo pairing. That said, stereo pairing Roam speakers only works via Wi-Fi, which is frustrating like the rest of the Roam user experience.

@@waynedexter Clarity. JBL, Bose, and Marshall all sound too processed. Once you have a stereo pair, clarity becomes more important to get an immersive soundstage.

So I should buy the Bose? I won’t be pairing two speakers but want the best sound. I prefer the look of the Marshall but it sounds like Bose has the better sound?

The JBL Flip 6 probably has some of the best sound I've heard honestly. If you like the emberton, it will have a smidge less bass than the bose flex. Don't buy on sound alone if looks are important.

Number one you gotta make sure you’re hooked up to the correct network on your Wi-Fi and then the best way to listen to the speaker is high resolution music! I love Sonos products. They are great never disappointing.!🤨

As a Sonos user, it's definitely the "Apple" of portable/smart home audio. It can be quite a hassle, they want you in their ecosystem, and no, I wouldn't blame ANYONE for not liking it, but personally I do think there are a lot of benefits to it as well, especially the more you use it and customize it (the EQ is hidden under both volume and Settings for instance, and you can stereo pair speakers and stream wifi quality sound to them - two Moves and you have yourself a pretty high quality, fully portable, fully wireless stereo streaming system). I wish ALL Sonos devices had Bluetooth (they don't), and that it could play a higher sample rate than 48kHz, but overall I still like it. Definitely nothing wrong with just having a fun and easy to use Bluetooth speaker though, I totally get it. I think Sonos is for those of us who are a little bit more "picky", we'll go through the hassle for direct wifi streaming and a wireless ecosystem.

Once you have this setup you can use AirPlay to bypass the Sonos app or Bluetooth when traveling but the sound is not great overall.

I use Alexa at home, not the proper sonos ecosystem, and i was thinking about should i buy a sonos Roam instead of Bose soundlink flex to be able to control smart stuff at home but… nope… being slim and sounding better are on my list and bose scores perfectly there. Some people show other boxes that are bulky er to carry with a bigger battery but 12h is enough for me and the better sound quality really is important for me…

Thanks for your review......I am locked in a Bluetooth and Chromecast setup..... And was thinking of getting a sonos era 100 for when we go on holiday.....but I like my music to sound dynamic and not flat...... I am going to ditch the Sonos idea completely......I just want to be able to play Bluetooth from my phone and bypass their app altogether

You have pointed out all of the factors why I would never purchase a Sonos speaker. Sonos lost me when their Playbar was the rage and it didn't offer hdmi and only optical connection. I have never purchased a Sonos product and never will.

I've heard good things about their products but I'm a little turned off by their infrastructure you have to play into. I also prefer androids and pcs if that's any indicator :)

I have Sonos sound system. The beam and Sonos one. They are great for Movies and shows. Music is ok.

Just FYI it works easier with iPhones because it supports AirPlay, not Cast (Sonos got beef with Google because Google stole Sonos' patented code or something like that). But that still requires wifi.

I have a last generation play 3 and it sounds great! However the app is horrible. It used to be great, like I could control volume from the Lock Screen using buttons, but that’s gone. Used to always be connected and never an issue. Now even with full wifi bars both on my iPad Pro and iPhone 13 half the time the app doesnt connect to the unit. It takes minutes and several Sonos dumps to connect, all the while the speaker is playing music flawlessly. Super annoying when all I want to do is skip a song, change playlists or even adjust the volume. Big advantage to wifi is I can talk on my phone etc while music plays in the background, so there’s that. Overall I’m tempted to get the Sonos 5 because it sounds so good but connectivity is troublesome. They do have airplay 2 though - surprised you couldn’t get that working on the portable?

Yes, but if you have Wi-Fi the speaker should be able to take advantage of that quality. Here it doesn’t look like. Honestly I finished buying the Marshall Acton 3 and the quality is ok even if it’s Bluetooth

Sorry man, those reviews broke the bank and it wasn't sustainable since it's such a specific niche. One day when money is no object and I have all the time I'll make more.
