Spoon carving with a 'stock knife', a traditional clogmaking tool, is an incredibly efficient way of getting a spoon started. With practise, this massive blade removes material with ease, leaving a super smooth finish. In this video I rough out a small tea-spoon from a piece of hazel wood.
These slow carving videos show my process mostly uncut, in real time.

Ad libbed one by taking the handles off a draw knife, straightening the ends, putting a hook on one end and putting a handle on the other. And lo and behold it’s WORKS...just dandy I might add....nah I won’t add that but yes it works. Leverage is a wonderful thing.

Genious device. In proper hands it has really interesting abilities. Precise strong cuts, less spitting. Genious.

Well now. I do believe this is the first time I have seen someone make a spoon with a stock knife. I learned by using an axe. I am amateur at best but a stock knife is definitely on my list of tools to acquire.

I've never seen a blade like that before. Intriguing but think I'll stick to my Gransfors for now; your skills didn't come overnight and my spoons are wonky enough as it is! Thanks for sharing it

I’m impressed by the symmetry you’re able to maintain with the stock knife.

Amazing how the leverage gives you enough control that it doesn’t split on those heavy cuts.

Lovely. I've only just got a stock knife (paroir here in France) but I'm loving how it cuts. Thanks.

Fantastic! I'd love to add a stock knife to my collection. I had a very short go on Gerald Getkate's at the Bodgers Ball this year, found it very hard to wield. Your experience and skills shine. 3 Gymnopedies too! My fave classical tune.

I wear leg braces and it would not be easy for me to bend knees to do this, can it be used on a higher surface so I can use it too?

Beautiful video. The stock knife appears to offer tremendous control, yet I can't help thinking how deceptively dangerous it is. I want one ;) But I also feel like I would need to continually remind myself to be careful and respect it!

@JoJo Wood Craft love this, it’s inspired me to try spoons. Stock knife is deceptively large and can produce such fine cuts, amazing tool. Question... any advice on buying split logs? Not sure where to buy? Only really carved some oak and mostly lime/basswood. Would love to try other woods. Thanks in advance.

The stock knife is an interesting tool but it seems very awkward to use. I saw one being used by a clog maker and it had a much straighter handle. Is there a reason for such a curve on yours?

I appreciate the efforts taken but it is really necessary to use such heavy knife for very little piece.????? Especially for any lady the tool should be been as light as possible.
