There was consequences for Arthurs behaviour but it seems none for the abusibve prison guards. In fact the last you see of Brenden Gleesons character is happily whistling away without a care in the world. I also hated how Arthur basically turned into Randall when talking to Gary, although he did at least show a glimmer of guilt when Gary told him he always liked him, as he was the only one kind to him. That was a clever reversal of what arthur said to him in the original .

This is the guy who wanted to be noticed and they finally did, only to realize at the climax that people didn't actually love him; they just love Joker. Harley included. And that's why Joker outlives Arthur. The ending wasn't a pointless scene; it was the central thesis. Knock knock. Who's there? Arthur Fleck. "Arthur Fleck" who?

I genuinely don't get why people hate this film so much and honestly your arguments in this review are not really explaining why you even think otherwise. You not being a fan of musicals honestly shouldn't have to do with it. Now, I'm OBSESSED with musicals, but that's not the point. The musical elements were happening because that's where his mental state was at, and Lee's as well, shared psychosis. It was incredibly unique and it doesn't matter if you like musicals - this film was something NEW and DIFFERENT. And I think they did it fabulously. I think the reaction to this film is also really reflecting the whole message of the film. Nobody cares about Arthur as a human, everyone only cares about Joker. That's the point the film was trying to make and haters are really outting themselves as they were the targets of the message. The first film was a character study of Arthur and his mental issues. This second one is also EXACTLY that, if not even more so. And it does it in a totally unique way. So it makes NO sense to say that it "destroyed" the first one. Like huh? It was exactly like the first one but more creative.

I saw this film on Wednesday, and I could not agree more with you Snarky. The best word I can come up with to describe that ending is, "Tragic". My wife and I were like WTF. I am really surprised that Todd Phillips went this direction. There are movies that should never have a sequel, and Joker surely was one of them, but if you're going to do it, then make the film a continued progression of the first one. They could have followed Arthur Fleck on his journey, which I felt he had just started towards end of the first movie when he murdered Murray on his talk show, into becoming the Crown Prince of Crime. Then maybe towards the end of this movie they could have had him back at Arkham; have Harley assigned to be his therapist, and end the movie there, a foreshadowing of things to come. The musical numbers were not necessary at all. I thought Lady Gaga was miscast for this movie, and they should have looked for someone else a little more seasoned as an actress. Having her with Phoenix looked like a mismatch in my opinion. I gave this film 2 out 10 stars. I was really disappointed.

If they were smart they woulda made a movie where Harley Quinn gets Arthur Fleck off due to an insanity plee, falls in love with his Joker persona, breaks him out the looney bin and together they kidnap a prominent performer and go on to take his place where they perform one song together before getting both arrested. Where as the first movie stole much from Taxi Driver, second movie could have stolen from King of Comedy. But no, they had to lame it up.

I almost got the sense with this film that Hollywood got to the writer and director about how "problematic" the themes of the first one was and this was intentionally wrote as a middle finger to anyone who liked the first one. It really is that bad and I think intentionally so, because it is hard to see what they were thinking if this was an accident.

Your comment on Fleck as portrayed by Phoenix is exactly how I feel about the character: at some points you hate him because he’s such a prick but two seconds later you feel bad for him because you see how he got there and the losing struggle to be a better person despite life beating him down. It’s a nuance that could have been easily lost if not for the talent of the actor in that role. The bit with the small child on the bus, for example, just kills me. That moment of innocent shared joy ripped away by the understandable overprotectiveness of the parent just reinforces what a cold, harsh world we live in, especially for those who are already vulnerable and losing the ability to cope.

I LOVED Joker. I went into part 2 excitement. But by the time it ended, I felt frustrated, disappointed and was stunned at how awful it was! The audience was dead quiet and I heard one person say "this is bullsh!t." I can't unsee what I just saw. They deconstructed everything good that was built in the first movie. I only grade it a 2 out of 10. That's because of the cinematic artistry and the Joker court scene. Total garbage. Can we just wipe this chalkboard clean? Erase it from my memory?

Why though? If the musical aspect was actually done well and incorporated into Joker’s psychotic breakdown, would you still have hated it? I love musicals and I hated Joker 2 because the musical elements were done horribly.

OMG. I love you and your reviews (think I found them a couple months ago) but I can’t watch this one because just from the title I know I’m going to get upset. lol. But seriously. I thought it was a masterpiece. It was an insanely bold direction to go, and I get people will dislike it, but as a movie… as an exploration of the “Arthur Dent” character (not the “Joker” character) it was close to perfect in my book. I can’t wait to see it again. But. You still rock! Keep up the great work. ❤

If it's going to be a musical at least make it like little shop of horrors or rocky horror or something from Jim Steinman even even queen over the top and operatic. the fact they're not showing the singing in the trailers has me in doubt it's musical moments are even good.
@MSgt5J0713 ай бұрын
Great idea! The problem is when you make a musical it's very often one and done, and it's very rare to turn a sequel into a musical. Odd choice. But in terms of musicals, remember Grease 2? Nope, me neither. Remember Shock Treatment, the sequel to The Rocky Horror Picture Show? Most Rocky Horror fans don't even know they made a sequel because it was so bad. My point is even if they put the musical production value into the Joker sequel like Rocky Horror or Little Shop, making it good would be an uphill battle.

You were watching it through the wrong lens. Joker was an allegory for corporate greed and glorification of mental unwell news and how we as a society make martyrs out of anti-heros. This second film holds a mirror up to our faces asks why we are so obsessed sequels and film tie-ins to other franchises. When the psychopath at the end seemingly becomes the NEW Joker, is a middle finger to KZbin channels that make content categorizing these film. This "Easter egg", was deliberately put there by Todd Phillips as he says "put this somewhere." I think in this franchise what I get out of is that Todd Phillips is the Joker. I will have to watch it again to dig a little deeper.

I liked the movie a lot. It was pretty much exactly what I expected going in. Joaquin warned us well in advance. 'I won't do a sequel, but if I were to, it would need to cover new artistic territory.' (Somewhat misquoted). It was exactly that, a large budget art film. It was an experiment, and I weep for those who can't embrace the jankyness of it.
