Having this version of Eric and Shelly using drugs feels really disrespectful to the original, not because of the scene where Eric saves Darla, but because Eric Draven and Shelly Webster were a shining light in that dark city in the flashbacks we see how despite the horrors and sadness around them they were this happy loving couple and when they died the city got so much darker.

The fact that Shelly and Eric meet in a rehab and their love is expressed by leaving rehab, getting high, and having sex in a penthouse is just foul. Modern Hollywood really thinks that's a love story that would transcend death?

That aspect of the original crow film stuck with me for my whole life without even realizing at first. It was a clean, pure love without sexualizing the characters. As someone that's been into music subcultures their whole life, this ideal carried over as well. Now it seems like our society is constantly promoting drugs and sex, even shitty movies like this remake are clear cut examples of our moral decay

Modern Hollywood is so twisted and perverted, that it does it best to present bad as good, villains as heroes, etc. So of course they take universally negative traits and try to present them as positive. The gentleness of Eric and Shelly is what makes them so likeable and the story so beautiful. They're soft and sensitive people who meet the most brutal of ends and this makes the audience want Eric to get revenge. This is a dork with face tattoos who seems to embrace his badassness whereas the 94 film was far more subtle
@pixiniarts4 ай бұрын
They are supposed to be innocents, this is a clearly defined demarcation point in the comics and the '94 film understood that. It's why I refuse to acknowledge this one even loosely as The Crow Eric and Shelly as criminal drug addicts is the ultimate spit in the face to The Crow.
@isapheonix4 ай бұрын
@@pixiniarts aside from possession and use of drugs i didnt get a sense that they broke any laws, which i have feelings about addiction being criminalized. Instead i got the sense they were addicts who had both come from abusive situations and loved each other in spite of the pain theyd gone through. It was what was especially important about erics character finding out about shellys ugly past and still wanting to save her from pain.
@thehater61894 ай бұрын
@isapheonix i have yet to see the movie, but in the original, no time is wasted establishing the characters in detail. We are just told they are innocent people, pure and gentle. The new ones may be innocent, but they do not seem pure and certainly not gentle. As such, it is easier to empathize with them and even to get behind Eric's rampage and character development.
@isapheonix4 ай бұрын
@@thehater6189 ya the original you dont know anything about the the characters at all when they die. I didnt even remember the womans name they spent so little time on her. She was nothing more than the tragic inciting incident with the standard rape trauma. This time i actually know the womans name is shelly. I didnt get a sense that she wasnt a gentle person in the new movie. She was involved in dangerous situations by her clearly narcissistic mother at too young of an age and was trying to escape that. Further I dont need eric and shelly to be pure just people trying to do good when theyve been dealt a bad hand is good enough for me and to be honest, i find it far more relatable. And the idea of a person confronting the worst of the one they love and choosing to love them anyway feels more like love to me tbh. Also I LOVE that they got rid of the magical asian from the original. That whole thing was weird. TBH i have seen both and actually prefer the new one. Its not full of the 80s moralizing about "just say no" and pretending that quitting drugs is so easy that was in the first one, or the racist hypersexualized magical asian character, or any of the other silly ass tropes.

Artists/musicians/film makers used to be talented & creative, and receive funding from rich folk who took chances, knowing they couldnt do what “we” do (but wanted to make something, and get $ return…potential for big bucks) Almost every game changer movie, especially horror flicks, have this origin story. “Rushed, cheap film blows audiences minds and earns millions!” Now artists/musicians/film makers receive marching orders from CEOs & shareholders who are afraid of risks/fresh ideas and only want more of what they perceive to be guaranteed money makers. (Usually by highjacking beloved IPs) Then add AI. DEI. Etc. Like modern day customer service, our satisfaction isn’t a priority. Me: “and how’s that going for everybody?!” Lol Most of these sequels/reboots arent legit and inspired, they’re attempts by boardrooms full of assholes to rip off fans (as we’re perceived to be stupid money-burning content vampires/zombies lining up for “the next one”). One can only hope several years of massive $ losses for all studios will teach someone something and maybe the ship can be corrected. Though probably they’ll just dive further into AI trying to make em for cheaper and wonder why everything sucks and losses are stacking.

The Crow has two main themes - love and grieve. Love is shown in the relationship between Eric ans Shelly, Grieve is the whole revenge plot. For me it seems that someone at Lionsgate went and said "Well, we have 4 John Wick movies, each crazier than the last and Bill Skarsgaard got great reviews as the Marquise. Let's do something with love and violence again!" And that's pretty much all they took away from the crow movies - lovers are killed, he returns and enacts vengeance, brutally so. The eomtional component fell flat, even in the Wick movies it didn't matter after the first third of the first movie and Hollywood trying to sell love as some communal trip on substances and sex ist just cringe.

The Crow is something that should be treated with more respect. The fact that the Crow even exists is a tragedy. James O'Barr wrote it as a coping mechanism after his fiancee was killed by a drunk driver. The only reason this even exists, is because someone died needlessly. Then of course Brandon Lee tragically dying on set. I'm not saying The Crow is a sacred book/film, but it needs to be approached with more respect than this remake.

I would like to see a film adaptation of The Crow: Dead Time, the only graphic novel besides the original that James O'Barr had a hand in crafting the story. Having it deal with the Resurrection of not only the hero, but also the villains, a century later, is a fresh twist to the lore of the Crow
@pendrake404 ай бұрын
My (semi-conspiracy) theory is that, besides being a _'cash grab'_ project ("production" is probably to generous a label), the [The Crow (2024) film] was made in order to *_tarnish_* the legacy of Brandon Lee and [The Crow (1994) film]; that way, later remake/reboots will draw-in further _'cash grab'_ audiences hoping for a "redemption" Crow-film/-sequel (i.e.: Ghostbusters 2016, 2021, 2024) Thanks for uploading this, *Snarky Jay.* :)

Just got out of the theatre. Quick notes. 1. very German aesthetic 2. Recombines modern action tropes like "Kill Bill" with"John Wick" 3. Kinda touched on "Constantine" vibes when Eric was resurrected 4. Thought the ending was a "Donnie Darko" allegory of fentanyl overdose. 5. Thought the main villain was a predator with tons of underage sex abuse undertones. Film alluded to physical abuse with Eric's childhood. 6. Again very German! No love in the romance story. I don't know if you could have told this Epsteinesque narrative without latching onto the Crow's mythology, but it definitely had a message against the trappings of the material world.
@carolusrex52134 ай бұрын
If being very german kills me because the comic and original movie was set in my hometown of detroit, not an accurate detroit but a very Gothic version of is, that's why they keep referring to devils night since it is an actual cultural thing for the city of detroit and would often lead to a lot of crime and arson

I think your review is well articulated. No one has any business remaking "The Crow." I work at a movie theater, and I get tickets for free. My theater screened "The Crow" in May for its' 30th anniversary. When I saw the trailer for the remake, I was so irritated that I paid for my ticket to see the original in protest. Last night, instead of seeing the crappy remake, I ordered a copy of the 30th anniversary 4K UHD edition of "The Crow," as well as James O'Barr's graphic novel and Bridget Baiss's book "The Crow: The Life, Death & Rebirth of A Classic Film." This will be a fun weekend of ignoring the remake and celebrating the original!

The 1994 Crow was a movie I never watched because of how Brandon Lee died. I watched the news when it happened. It was tragic. I decided to finally check it out. And you are right. The original is great. I recall those 80's-90's films. Often the small indie flick was better. The orginal Crow was heartbreaking about a tortured soul seeking justice. I loved Brandon Lee in this movie. The story of his love unfolded without nasty angry tattoos and drug addicted jerks. The love story's background unfolded throughout. Eric Draven and his love were not drug addicts or jerks. But good people. Ernie Hudson and the kid who was their friend were great for rounding out the tale. The horror of his fiance's end-only because she sought justice against eviction in their building. And the cat! They saved the cat. The gritty gotham-like city. The fate of the bad guys. The shadowy film quality and imagry. It was great in that B movie way. Based on the trailer to the new Crow, they only took the title. Darn you. Now I have just ordered a copy for myself on bluray. Of the orginal Crow of course. The new one is an abomination based on the promos alone.

See, when City of Angels came out, I was excited, because like they said in the first one "sometimes people come back" if their trauma is too great and unresolved. And I liked in interviews where Brandon said "what's this guy going to be like? What's the right and wrong way to behave, if you came back to life? No one's ever done that, how's that going to make you act?" which I think comes across in him making dark humour jokes/gallows humour etc. So I couldn't wait to see what someone else might do with it. What we got was someone acting exactly like Eric Draven :/ the idea has potential, but I don't think Hollywood can tap it.

Eric and Shelly were good people. The wanted to help people. They were fighting unlawful evictions. Just like Erine's character he was the lone good cop...it was suppose to show how bad the city was these characters were light within a dark world. The Crow was meant to be dark..not just gory. It was suppose to show you that Eric was NOT just about revenge...he helped people namely Darla to see they were making bad choices. I had a feeling this "reboot" would be bad idea.
