The stairs thing doesn't make sense regardless because she lied about her past, she definitely wouldn't have lived in the same neighborhood. Plus, when she says "those stairs," she's saying it like she's the audience. Regardless of how you slice it, there's no reason she should know about those stairs and how relevant it is to the Joker. (Even the fake in universe tv special would have no idea about the stairs either, so she shouldn't have gotten it from that)

It's really weird that people have theories that it's a prequel to Heath Ledgers Joker, when that literally doesn't make sense, not only timeline wise, but also we see how Harvey Dent becomes Two Face in the Dark Knight and yet Joker 2 shows a completely different version of Harvey Dent.

The movie could’ve been a great follow up, but with the bad musical numbers, sloppy writing, and the guy we’ve been following for two movies wasn’t even the real Joker, it was imo a big waste of time.

No shame in liking it. But there's no way I'd ever spend the time or money on this movie. The Pitch Meeting is more than enough for a movie like this. And the Honest Trailer ripping into it is a bonus. I totally believe the director hated having to make a sequel and wanted to kill any chance of being asked to make a third movie.

I'm glad Arthur wasn't the "real" Joker. As good as the first movie was, that just wasn't the Joker's character. Joker doesn't do what he does because he's some sad, angry man out for revenge to stick it to the higher ups for not caring about the little people. The real Joker is an agent of chaos who thinks we're all one bad day away from snapping, and so he views all of life as a pointless joke that you might as well laugh at it, and since comedy is subjective, his brand of "comedy" isn't wrong, and you always take shots at those who don't get the joke to try and get them to laugh (and Batman is his ultimate challenge because he's "so serious" all the time).

I saw it in the theaters, but not until after I read some reviews and knew what I was going into. I really liked, though I can understand why many didn't. It's definitely a niche movie and they did something different. There's always a risk that you'll get a lot of push back. If I saw it with only the trailer and not the reviews, I think I still would have liked it since I am into off beat stuff. But, I may have been more, "eh, I don't know," about it.

I've just come up with what I hope is my completely original fan theory. This 2 movies might have been told from the point of view of the "real joker", with a combination of what he saw in the news plus whatever he heard spying on Arthur and Harley talking about in the asylum. That's why the story is so random, specially the second one. Because, I mean, seeing this as the normal telling of a story of someone in the third person it makes no sense, but if you went to ask the Joker to tell you a story, this is exactly how it would feel to listen to him.

We kind of have a real world example of this phenomenon now with the Insurance CEO Killer. So many people have had the experience of being wronged by their insurance carrier (the man), and probably dreamed about hurting them in their low moments. So there's millions online championing his actions. That maybe if this became a more regular occurrence, Insurance companies would think twice about doing everything possible to screw over their customers. If empathy won't work maybe fear will. So before he was caught, they thought he was the champion at a movement, that he might strike again. Predictably the Man wants no part of the little guy fighting back so they probably put like 50x the normal resources into solving that murder and then once caught had the perp walk with like 30 law enforcement officers. The little guy sees Arthur and sees what they want to see be, just as the Man sees what they fear will come to pass. Because he finally has people that like him, he tries to be what he wants them to be, but he can't. There were many signs early on that Lee fell in love with the Caricature in the TV movie, the character of Joker, not the actual Arthur Fleck. I'm sure it's happened thousands of times, a person seeks out to date an actor / actress and it doesn't work out because they watched them on TV or movies and fell in love with the character they were playing, not the actual person who 99% of the time is quite different in real life. Arthur's attorney seems to be similar in that she desperately wants him to be two personalities because proving that seems important to her for some reason. She was probably abused somehow by a close friend or relative, or maybe they murdered someone else and she holds fast to the belief that it wasn't truly them, that they were actually a good person. That some dark park beyond their control did those horrible things. --- Arthur's not saying they're dumb for liking these things, just that Arthur won't continue to pretend to be that thing to indulge their fantasy, they'll have to do it on their own. But people get REALLY mad when their heroes don't live up to what they think they should be. Just look at the reaction by the fans to the portrayal of Luke in The Last Jedi. Even after he did finally show up to save the day when needed in his own way (Force Projecting so neither could kill the other, just a violenceless distraction so the others could escape) people were still furious he wasn't Luke the Legend through the whole movie. Or in the case of this movie, the Psychopath at the end flips the script on Arthur and does what he did to Murray when HE realizes Arthur's not who he thought he was. Of course Arthur was control Z'd back to sad Arthur, once he was caught (as he was at the end of the 1st movie) he was back on his meds again that literally control the chemicals in your brain. What he did in the 1st movie was in part because he was off his medication. He becomes more like the Joker once he is off them again. They let Lee in solitary, in the jail section of the courthouse, etc. because Gotham is corrupt and Lee is rich, I imagine she is bribing the guards with money. Did Ryan George forget the cops that chased him into the subway car saw him dance on the stairs? Last word on them is they were alive, but in critical condition. One most have survived to describe it, and it made it into the TV movie. It is kinda funny that viewers are mad at the movie for not being what they wanted it to be, given the message of movie. Though if that was the intention I think Phillips was trying a bit too hard to be off-putting with the sheer volume of music numbers. For pacing's sake they really needed to trim out some of those songs in the first 2/3rds of the movie. It is kind of like who is this movie for? Fans of musicals probably aren't going to like the uglier content. It's kind of like Walk Hard, it's a great musical biopic parody and funny but there are lot of people I know who I'm sure would enjoy it except for the HARD R elements in the film. To the point I wish they also put out like a PG(-13) "Family and Friends" cut I could show them as the movie is clever enough with the wordplay and innuendo to entertain.

Just to note on two points, only one relevant to this. lol I think average audiences were more disappointed that Luke ended up a miserable failure. Plus, Force Awakens got flak for being too similar to New Hope, but ironically Last Jedi was too different from Empire Strikes Back - at least in regards to the exiled mentor: Yoda was acting like a weirdo as the initial stage of Luke's training, whereas Luke was acting like a weirdo just to make Rey go away, with no deeper meaning than that. Also, regardless of aging making one more cynical, it felt wildly out of character for Luke to consider murdering Ben for something he hadn't done yet nor even would definitely do, when Luke was able to maintain faith in his father who was already a mass murderer and accessory to planetary genocide. There were definitely angry audience members, however, the bulk of it was exploited and exaggerated by opportunistic KZbin channels - dozens exploded with huge numbers because they latched on to the disappointment and twisted bad writing into some asinine theory of a political war. In terms of musical fan - hater, neutral, lover - I'd be around the middle between neutral and lover, so my conclusion about the musical aspect not working is that the general rule of musicals is that every song advances character and/or plot, and at the very least doesn't ruin the pacing. Majority of the songs in this movie were just a jukebox selection of vaguely related ideas, yet all slowed the pace to a halt. I'm surprised they didn't toss in Stuck in the Middle with You, considering all the clown songs they chose just because of the word "clown" or "joker" in the lyrics. Also, they went for the more realistic singing style for a lot of the time, in that the character sang as well as they would in reality, which meant a lot of it sounded janky and amateurish, since it wouldn't make sense for a psych patient with zero training or experience in musical theatre to start singing professional quality.

I am still holding the same position as I previously have: Joker was not a good Joker movie. It was a great character study when you accept that Arthur is NOT the Joker we all know and love. Folie a Deux confirmed that, which I was fine with because that was already the assumption. What I hate about the movie is that it removes almost all discussion around what the first movie actually was. It answered too much of the mystery and therefor retroactively made the first movie less good. Joker should have never gotten a sequel. It was greed and greed alone that made that movie come into this world. Adding the 3 top salaries for this movie essentially amounts to the same sum of money that was used to make the entirety of the first movie (not counting the budget for marketing). I did watch in theatres. I just wanted so badly to believe that the movie would be good. I had nothing against what I saw in the marketing.

I don't hate joker 2, i don't dislike it, but i don't know if i like it or not. Tbh 100% honest i enjoyed everything until the 3 act, when the guards do that to him in the prison and he realizes that he is arthur and he did what he did not joker... you say that the movie does a good job telling the story it wanted to tell , the message and although it's true, it has a big problem, huge build up without pay off, if you show a gun in the first act someone better use it in the end like once upon time in Hollywood did with that fire gun, this movie tries to build up a joker come back that never trully happens and that's what disapointed me, also harvey was there but he wasn't really harvey, "lee" should appear way more in a movie called madness with 2, also i feel like harley would not give up on the joker she would just try to make him realize that he is indeed the joker... a shame because she is a good harley the rest of the movie... the movie is well filmed, has good acting and soundtrack, if this wasn't linked to the joker, gotham, and overall the batman ip people would probably enjoy it for what it is, so i get the people that were mad with the movie, i just wish that the 3 act was more... well joker! He could die at the end and other guy becomes the joker but i don't wanna see the joker getting ra... by some guards, even if he is just a pseudo/proto joker. I still don't know how i feel about this movie, it has some briliant aspects but tried to hard to destroy what 1 did like ryan george said. I didn't suffer the same disappointment as most since I didn't love the first film. Thought it was adequate, but not deserving of the hype it received. I don't think it warranted a sequel either; it would've been fine as a single film like the movies it was aping (The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver... both starring Robert De Niro, interestingly). So, indeed, I agreed with Ryan's writer's first line. ahha You know, I'll give them credit for taking a risk by trying something completely different in a sequel. It failed but hey, that's what can happen with risk. A weird omission to me was that nobody mentioned the DEATH OF THOMAS and MARTHA WAYNE. Kind of bizarre the city's most famous citizens, with Thomas even running for mayor, getting murdered, and yet that was never even mentioned again, if only in passing. I know it was 2 years later, but it would still be a pretty big deal. I wasn't a fan of Lady Gaga's performance. It's weird to say, but it felt fake - which I suppose might be intentional, since Lee was a pathological liar, but it shouldn't be obvious to audience from the start. The other performances were fine - like Brendan Gleason was a really believable a-hole, and that Gary Puddles performances was the highlight of the whole movie, and is a pity is stuck in the prison of the film. No offense to the Harvey Dent guy, yet I found him flat. There was really nothing Harvey Dent about him either; could've been any generic movie lawyer. Give him the coin or something! aha To quibble with one point from the Honest Trailer: Arthur was shown to be a loser in the first film, too. He was so pathetic and alone, he imagined a relationship with a neighbour he barely knew - he was a literal incel! lol. Plus, the first film wasn't about some poor victimised guy becoming empowered, it was some poor victimised guy suffering a complete psychotic breakdown, which happened to coincide with a bubbling social upheaval that was already happening, and he merely became a symbol for it by accident. Anyway, I'm glad they used Jon for the Trailer; for musicals, they tend to replace him with singers and they are never as funny as him. To quibble with Ryan, the Joker fanboys bombing the courthouse did make sense, in that they thought the Joker told them to do it; while superficial, it fit into the theme of the clowns hearing what they wanted to hear, so during one of Arthur's rants during the televised trial, they thought he was giving them orders to spring him from court. Also, there is explicit mention of a TV movie made about Arthur, so it's fine to think Lee learned about the stairs from that movie. "This random guy was" is pretty much the definitive Joker origin story. lol I'm surprised they didn't harp on about at least half if not more of the movie never happened, with it being delusions in Arthur's head. I guess that was in the first one too with the imaginary girlfriend, but still, seems like something that'd be an issue for lot of people.

I saw Joker 2 and The Substance the same night. My very first impression walking out the theatre was that I liked Joker 2 more than The Substance. Both movies had tragic endings that I could see coming halfway through them both, and both endings made sense. If they were happily-ever-afters then their overall narratives definitely wouldn't have made sense. I feel like the singing in Joker 2 complimented the story the movie was telling; just like the dancing in Joker complimented its story. What was painful about it was that one; Joaquin Phoenix can't sing. He could carry a tune at times, and nail the dancing, but he can't sing. Then two, because Lady Gaga can sing, she sang ALL the time and barely had enough speaking time. That felt unbalanced to me. I loved her singing though. A few of the songs had some really pretty lyrics; they reminded me of the 50s and 60s songs that Seth McFarland showcases on Family Guy. As a HUGE Harley Quinn fan, they could've did without changing Harley's origin story, but I'm more upset that they changed her core character motivations than how they changed her back story.
