@@michaelkaggwa4915 because it is. The new universe hasn't even started yet. If the first superman movie fails, the universe goes away. They haven't established their primary universe yet nor cast a Joker. That first Superman movie has to do exceptionally well for everything else to follow. The first Joker movie undermines the official lore and cosplays as a Joker movie imo. This could have a negative impact is all they're saying. They want it to be good and successful but are worried.

The Batman didn’t make a billion dollars. The Joker made a billion. So you can’t just say that the iconography is the reason it’s so revered. Give the film a bit of credit. As far as the the glorification of villainy, that’s not what I took from it at all. Quite the opposite. I looked at the influence environment can have on mental health.

I was struggling with mental health when I watched the first movie. And it moved something deep inside of me. I have never felt so connected to a character in a movie before. THIS version of Harley is actually going to be far more dominant than any other Harley we’ve seen before. Instead of her breaking apart from him, she’s literally going to be the dominant one in their relationship. In a weird, backwards way, SHE is his joker, and HE is her Harley. And that’s a take we’ve never seen before.

What's wrong with taking the relationship between Harley and Joker back to the start? This ISN'T the the Margot Robbie version. This ISN'T the animated version - current or classic. This is literally the beginning of their relationship, not the end of the journey that we've seen in other projects. If you're happy to read a bunch of comics that have different interpretations of characters, why the beef here? Some of us obviously saw more in the first one than you did, and that's fine, but there's no need to imply that people who did enjoy it and found things to think about after watching it are lesser, or stupid, by saying things like it's "not as good as people think it is".

Many people didn't dig Joker because it was bleak, felt hopeless, and was too grounded for many, as well as coming out at a time when the big blockbuster mainstream superhero films were a little past their prime but were still fresh on everyones minds. I don't think Joker was trying to "Say anything", it was just a character study on someone going completely mad, then finally embracing it as the city that put him down eventually lifted him up. It had a lot more depth than the character just falling into a vat of acid. It was good though...really really good.
@Matt-tq9nd

@@BTT16 embracing madness is romanticizing mental illness. The first movie doesn't do anything to really dive into mental health, it's just superficial. @BTT16 no Hector explains. The Joker in the comics is mostly portrayed as not insane or mad. He's performing insanity but is not actually insane. He's as smart as batman. I like the Joker and he never "embraces madness" in live action. Jack Nicholson's Joker is a criminal like gangster who probably is a sociopath/psychopath. Jared Leto is similar but more unstable. Heath Ledger is the closest to the comics in that when people call him crazy he gets offended. He's not crazy. But in these adaptations we don't see them 1)STRUGGLE, 2)ADAPT, AND 3)OVERCOME/ACCEPT. Embracing madness is a horrible analogy never even used in those films. You make it seem like it's a core part of the character but I could list every Joker adaptation live-action appearances and animated and not one of them shows the Joker struggle/accept his mental illness. Listen to the show because Hector gave a good reason.

The way mentally ill people are treated in America is a real issue!! It affects hundreds of thousands of people a year, and not just white men. Joker was a movie about poverty, neglect, abuse, and mentally ill people who fall though the cracks everyday. I felt intensely seen by the scenes with Arthur in his community clinics. I don't understand your complaints, I mean, what does it matter if it's not like the Joker from the comics, specifically they give you another, somewhat more realistic point, even though they give you a different origin without the need for the Joker, no? can exist without Batman, now the part of your opinion where it is not supported why Arthur becomes Joker, it seems a little stupid coming from you. Don't you think that in real life There are people with mental problems and no one is interested or do they simply ignore them? And it not only talks about mental problems, but also about of poverty, corrupt governments and that explains nothing to you, I am also a fan of comics and I always want them to do well in the movies, for the character to be respected, and in the first movie if the character is respected by giving it another origin, everyone has their own opinion but I think they preferred not to see everything that was around and almost complain "since it's not like the comic book it's a bad movie

So if this was a story that was already depicted in another form of media, then it would be good? I assume it has something to do with Todd Phillips and his off camera remarks, but I don't think we should judge art by the artist. This is such an odd topic. I remember when the first Joker was announced I was dead set on hating the movie. I thought it was a massive waste of time and resources for Warner Brothers to make a movie about just the Joker when the DCEU was literally on fire. There wasnt a comic it was based on there was no real connective tissure to the greater world of Batman, and I was pretty miffed we hadnt gotten a Batman solo movie yet. The trailer looked dumb, the premise sounded dumb, and ill admit, I watched it mostly so I could articulately trash on it. Not my proudest moment. Then I saw the movie and was absolutely fucking flabbergasted. It was incredible. I loved how it pointed a finger at societys lack of interest in helping people. How it unabashedly pointed at the failure of our healthcare system, how it showed a man that reminded me of myself. I was diagnosed with ADHD in the mid 90s as I was in elementary school. Ive struggled with medications and the pressures of society that in so many ways tells you to conform and be normal and not being able to do that because I was physically and mentally incapable of doing so. I fully understand that Arthur Fleck is the bad guy. That is plain as day. The way he responds to the world that tells him his dreams are not worth pursuing, a world that leaves him poor, a world that has no interest in addressing his (pardon my Marxism) material conditions whatsoever is obviously not acceptable. Yet you cannont help but understand why he lashes out the way he does, why he felt he was driven to need to murder people. To me it is a stark warning of what happens to people when their material conditions are not met. It shows you that people will become uncaring monsters when society turns their back on them. Its a warning for our time. Its a warning that was not understood 100 years ago when Nazi Germany rose to power and I fear that the movies warning for us today will go unnoticed. The warning signs are all there. People are destitute and desperate and what you get when that happens is a world of Arthur Flecks. I do not know if this sequel will be able to even come close to that level of introspection, and to be frank Im just as trepidatious about this film as the first time around because it looks like they are going to fuck up Harleys origin story. Im going to go see it anyway because in my eyes the cast and production team has earned my benefit of the doubt.

Wow, I had a totally different reaction to the first movie. I took it as Fleck was the inspiration for the Joker who ends up as Batman’s nemesis. With the introduction of Harley in this film that appears to not be the case, but why are you so down on the multiverse / elseworlds idea now? I thought the message was that we should show kindness, support and empathy toward those with mental health issues as this was an, albeit fantastical, example of what can go wrong. I didn’t think the original glorified this, but rather showed the glorification that these individuals can (inappropriately) feel from their actions and the attention they bring.

The first movie was about him becoming Joker, not about Joker from start to finish, and it mingled in mental health issues, child abuse, and bullying. It was very nihilistic, and that can rub people up the wrong way, but I personally loved the movie. I enjoyed the performances, the story, the cinematography and the score. It's entertainment, and in entertainment there are horror movies, slasher movies, crime thrillers, and psychological thrillers, where there are characters that do reprehensible acts to others, yet no one is worried about anyone copying them, or stating that the writers or directors endorse the character's actions. There are so many things that in my opinion, that are wrong about your take on the first film, the "message" of that film, what the film even is in regard to the character of Joker, the story of the film, all stated by the director himself. We know Joker is an unreliable narrator, so all of the events, half of the events, or just a few things about the story he told in some room with a psychiatrist could or could not be true. But it sounds like you guys think it was a film that was glorifying violence and taking shots at the mentally ill. When that's the complete opposite "message" I got from the film. It was a film about the mental health crisis in this country, and hoe broken some of our systems are at helping these people, combined with a society that feels ignored, is dealing with poverty, and how all of those things can come to a head if we choose to do nothing about it. But let's also not forget, it's a movie about a VILLAIN! Ya know, the murderous psychopathic killer that is Joker. So, it's not going to be ice cream and rose pedals. They were trying to explore what makes a person that way in a grounded reality. I could go on, but I respect your opinion. I just obviously disagree. It's one of my 2 favorite DC films ever made. Along with The Batman. Maybe you guys should just skip this movie if you already seem to have your minds set up already.

I will say in regards to Harley, it doesn't look like the toxic relationship angle we are used to. It actually seems like Harley is in a weird way, in this world, the only one who understands Arthur and is actually pushing him to be himself... So they are more of a Bonnie and Clyde than an abusive situation. Also, my entire take of rhe first film was all about society, how it treats those with mental health problems, how those people become villanized when they aren't given the help needed and become victims to their illness. It could be taken as a less to society in a way as to why more services should be offered (which I felt the scene of him being told there wouldn't be more funding dor his counseling and medication). Also, it was never established that this would be the Joker to face Batman. We see he inspired many people from his actions, which led to Wayne being killed in the firsy film. The same could be the case for the person who becomes the actual Joker, if that's what they are going for. Any who, it's not a film I like to rewatch because it's sad and grim, but I am excited for the sequel.

The first Joker film is an interesting one. I loved it on every level. I didn't think there was one bad thing about it. I also don't think it was glorifying violence or crime in any way, either. I can sorta see how you might come to that conclusion, but I think the more recent, completely sane and decidedly evil Joker in the comics is more of a glorification of violence than Arthur Fleck is. Arthur Fleck is more what I think Killing Joke tried to do and failed at, which is just to show the degradation of a man's psychological and emotional health sos much so that it completely breaks him, assuming he wasn't broken already. I think you guys are right in that the film didn't really talk about or address the topics it presented, but I think that's kinda the point. In the time the film is set, nobody did talk about that stuff. Even today, people don't talk much about it because they don't LIKE yo talk about it. It's uncomfortable. And it can often lead to people who are in positions such as Arthur Fleck going to the same extremes as he did. Because people break like he did all the time. And every time it happens, every time there's a shooting, or some other incident, we might say a few things about gun control or about mental health, but then nobody actually does anything. We talk about it thinking that just talking will stop the problem, but it won't. Action needs to be taken, and I think the whole POINT of Joker is to show what will happen (and continue to happen), in a movie format, if we keep talking without acting. Most people aren't subject to the kind of violence people like Arthur unleash. Most people don't have friends or family who are victimized by their violence. So in trying to get the audience to synpathize with Arthur, they're not trying to get the audience to think he's in the right, they're trying to get them to wake up and realize that they actually need to do something instead of just talking. But also, Hector is completely right. If these weren't Joker movies, they wouldn't have been anywhere near as popular. I think Todd Philip has even said that the inly way WB would make the film is if he turned into a Joker film. So it wasn't even his idea. But in a way, I think that's a good thing, because it helped to put eyes on the story, and hopefully did a lot more of what I said it was trying to do than it would have done if it were just the average depressing drama film.

Part of the reason I don't like the movie is because I couldn't muster any sympathy for the Joker character and the mentally ill edgy outsider trope has been done too much and not one that I'm very interested in. Also, I think the trope of showing things that didn't really happen as if they did happen was done poorly, and since that's such a movie cliche it needs to be done really well for it to be interesting for me instead of feeling like a cop out by the writers. Just my 2 cents.

Joker wasn't in his situation because of his skin color and the film doesn't say it is the reason. He was a generally weird and off putting person. who like many in Gotham has mental issues that are being ignored. The film tries to show the kind of city Bruce Waynes father was running left many people like Arthur without the health care and mental care they desperately needed. It was not about race. Many in Gotham were waiting for anyone to light the fuse to their growing anger. Arthur by chance becomes that person. IMO it works perfectly with most jokers who lead chaotic groups of people.

full disclosure, ive been diagnosed with mental problems, and 100% this movie doesnt provide the best insight in our mind and what it means to "walk in our shoes" but what it did do was be a good case study, for feeling relatable, alot, in hard times with our condition, albeit it was to an extreme none of us should ever take it, but, it was a case of "you should never judge someone from how they appear, everyone is battling there own demons" thats how i saw it, the ending went a bit too far but i think thats divide we have to make with this movie, yes it helps you understand mental illness but like a dangerous weapon, you learn to respect it, in the sense that you know it can harm you but you treat it like something to be "careful with" i dont agree with everything that happened in the movie but i can for the most part relate

I don’t necessarily agree with the take on Harley Quinn as a character. I mean, yes, she has had her independence which is fantastic for her! However, her character has and always will be a tragic one. She was driven clinically insane to the point of murdering by someone she thought she loved. It isn’t a nice story and it’s toxic alright; but it’s also the joker. He IS toxic. He doesn’t care about Harley, not really.

The first Joker movie was nothing short of a masterpiece. The fact that Batman was involved is what made it special. We got to see an in depth look of a man that is dealing with issues and to take a stand for himself and others like him so they are not taken advantage of, indicative of real life. The new trailer is vague and I think that was intentional so the audience doesn't have a preconceived idea as to what the movie will be about, which is usually typical amongst movie trailers nowadays.

@@hectorminator The movie wasn't for everyone, so if it didn't find a fan in you that's understandable. My comment wasn't directed at anyone in particular, more the sense that people have had 5 years to find ways to defend their feelings by attacking a brilliant movie. The accolades it garnered mock that line of thought. No reason for people to defend their feelings unless they are unsure of them as well? Anyway, thanks for the reply and Folie a Deux is heading to Venice as well. The artistic director, Alberto Barbera and several others saw the movie in February. From an interview yesterday with Deadline, ""It's a continuation of the story, but the film is completely different from the first film. If you're expecting the same in terms of violence or other things, you'll be surprised," Barbera said. "When I saw the film in L.A. at the beginning of February there were four or five of us in the screening room, including writer Scott Silver, and we were astonished, our mouths were open at the end of the screening. It is a darker film." "Barbera praised Phillips' creative risks for the sequel and believes fans will appreciate it. "It's a dystopian musical, or a musical of sorts. I think it's one of the most daring, brave and creative films in recent American cinema," Barbera said. "And, I think it really confirms Todd Phillips as one of the most creative directors working at the moment." Be well.

Reading some of these comments proves that fanboys really need to start watching more films that aren't super hero related. "Joker" is a competent but painfully derivative movie. It leans heavily on better films that came out long before it. Hell, there are better, recent movies where Joaquin Phoenix plays a mentally disturbed individual. Hector's not wrong; if there wasn't the faintest whiff of intellectual property slapped on it, people would've moved on from it. I'd love for fanboys to not delve into pseudo-intellectual BS whenever a goddamn movie like this releases, but that's like asking for world peace.

It was better than most of the DCU output that's for sure. This one looks pretty interesting with the addition of Harley and the other Batman characters. I don't need movies to have some grand statement, just give me something interesting to watch for 2 hours and I'm golden. The first movie did that and I'm hoping this one does too. Really not a fan of seeing Hector shitting on filmmakers though. Only other Todd Phillips movie I've seen is The Hangover though so maybe he is a bit shit at his job.
