Do you guys for fun catch episodes of SMALLVILLE rewatch by Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling called TALKVILLE? They are into S5 now so you could fun find earlier ones from S1-4 and their comments as they like most actors NEVER seen watched the TV show they act in. When Christopher did the Smallville segments I was overjoyed and it gave imho canon status to the show version of Clark Kent in youth. That other famous cult fantasy comics sci fi were in the show was great especially the other TV Clark Kent, and movie Lanas, Wonderwoman, movie Supergirl and Carrie Fisher from Star Wars.

Well not really, as Superman has existed since 1938. But I get what you're saying, he embodied the character better than anyone else before or since. I think of this movie as a tribute to a legendary actor for us, but also as an enduring love letter from his kids to both of their parents, as both of them have now passed. Dana died of cancer just 2 years after Christopher.

@@acurisur Oh I know lol. He certainly wasn't the first to portray him in film media, but he was probably the one who embodied the character and just breathed life into him in a way that just made Superman as a concept just that much more palpable. Crazy that it's been 20 years since his death, and that it's taken this long to have a movie about him and his family. I'm really hoping this film sheds more light on Dana as well. I remember it being really sad when she passed away so soon after Christopher. I appreciate the trailer, in Christopher's words, acknowledging that Dana probably saved his life. With all the fan discourse over whether or not Henry Cavill should return, or if David Corenswet will do a good job, I think it's as good a time as ever for fans, young and old, to look back at Christopher Reeve, as he really continues to be what so many think of as Superman.

That John Williams re-score just makes the trailer hit that much harder😢. His portrayal of the character really has no equal, and as amazing as he was as Superman, my favorite part was the way he played Clark Kent in such a way that really made it believable that people wouldn't recognize they were the same person. Between his performance and John Williams' iconic score, i would say they're the reason that original movie still holds up 46 years later

The idea of Superheroes on the big screen has evolved a lot in the last 46 years, but Christopher Reeve's performance as Clark Kent/Superman is still the blueprint for how to do it successfully. The way he embodied the character and brought such a presence to the screen is something actors in the role of a superhero still need to do to this day. That's what being an icon means.

2:18 his youngest son Will is going to be in the new Superman movie. 3:49 Will was around 2 yrs old when the accident happened. The other two were in their teens. 4:31 they were roommates at Juilliard and a week after the accident Robin walked into his hospital room dressed in scrubs, face mask and speaking in a Russian accent going around saying medical terms and doing his crazy antics. Christopher said that was the first time he laughed since the accident. What’s really sad was he was just starting to get feeling back in his extremities. Pin pricks in fingers and toes. He could also feel different temperatures. I think they’re doing it now to coincide with the new movie. 8:26 Matt(1979) & Alexandra(1983) are from a previous relationship and Will(1992) is with Dana. So Will was about 12 when his dad died and about 14 when his mom died. My father in law had to grow up like that. He has an older brother and sister and his parents died within two years of themselves before he was 15. Listening to him talk about growing up gives me a great idea of how Will felt.

1) Christopher Reeve made the whole "how can no one tell Superman is Clark Kent, he just puts on a pair of glasses" thing TOTALLY believable. 2) I forget who said it and I'll botch the quote, but Reeve also exemplifies what was said about Superman, something like, "he's not a hero because he is good and has power, he is a hero because he has power and does good."
@ForeverDegenerate4 ай бұрын
He didn't just make it believable. It's real. It happened. To him. I remember him telling a story about how he was shooting Clark Kent scenes, then they cut for lunch. He decided, on a whim, not to change out of his costume. So he just walked in to the local diner, dressed as Clark Kent, presumably still acting like Clark Kent (you know, hunched shoulders, lack of confidence, all of that stuff). Nobody ever realized it was him. Mind you, everyone in the city knew they were filming "Superman" down the street and that he was playing Superman. And, yeah, nobody in that diner realized it was him. He was like, "Huh. Well holy crap, it worked!" So yeah, Christopher Reeve proved that the "Clark Kent Disguise" actually works.

He was so good-looking and fun loving. In one of his first interviews, I think on Larry King Live, after his accident he answered a question about what happened to him with this (paraphrased) "Some people fall out of a window on the sixth floor and only have a few scratches. Others trip over their shoe laces and have a fatal fall." His and Robin Willams' friendship was everything the definition of friiendship should be. That was not the actual footage of his near fatal accident. Apparently he fell straight on the top of his head and his first 2 vertebrae were crushed by the weight of his entire body. Basically his injury could be compared to being decapitated because his skull was no longer attached to (the rest of) his spine, but was only attached to the rest of his body by skin, veins, arteries, muscles and nerves. It's a miracle he survived at all.

Saw this a little late but thanks for pointing out how Reeve's genuine passion and enthusiasm for the role of Superman vs his peers like Keaton probably had to do in part with how young he was at the time. I'm in the same boat where I first saw that movie when I was maybe 5 years old so it never clicked for me that he was only 24 at the time. When you brought that up my very first thought was to Mark Hamill who was also in his early 20's when first playing Luke, and that same energy.

I was finishing my Junior year in HS when we found out he was paralyzed. The social devastation in a pre-mass internet, pre-social media world was immensely profound. It reminded me how the world reacted when Magic Johnson announced he had HIV in 1991. Like Magic, Reeve was a generational icon. He was "superhuman" and along with the likes of JFK Jr., the closest we had to American Royalty. Those incidents, but especially with Reeve, made us question our mortality and life's fragility. 1995 was already weird as we were halfway through the OJ Murder "Trial of the Century." But this moment helped us focus on something a little less toxic for a brief moment, even as tragic as it was.
