Senor Cabron While actors and directors getting paid millions of dollars might seem bad, it’s really just supply and demand. Think about it, if an actor brings in millions of dollars for a studio, that money has to go somewhere. If it doesn’t go to the actor, it’ll go to the studio. I would much rather see actors getting paid the money that they earned rather than the studio getting all of it, and the same can be said for directors. Also, before someone says that actors/directors didn’t actually earn that money, again, it’s all about supply and demand. If there is a large demand for an actor/director, they will bring in a lot of money with their films. No matter what form of economy you have, supply and demand will always be present. As a little side note, I would also like to point out that this principle applies to every other job as well. Take athletes for example. Many people complain that they get paid so much, but it’s ultimately just supply and demand. If people don’t want athletes to make so much money, then they should stop buying tickets and merchandise. WE control how much money they make, because WE control their demand.

I think the other thing which Erin sort of touched on, is that directors get bigger paychecks because their income is so irregular compared to actors; In a lot of cases, that's the only income they're getting for 3-10 years at a time. So they need enough money to live off of for that length of time between jobs. And for a lot of the auteurs, who spend a lot of their own money on movies for creative freedom, only so much of that is going towards being able to eat for 3 years.

Look at it this way, The Joker (as a film) is a product or brand, no different than an iPhone or Instagram or makeup brand or any other property that is launched for consumer consumption and it just so happened that it made over $1B. When you subtract all the costs next to the very modest amount that it took to actually make the film, the Joker pulled away with a very, very healthy profit margin so why wouldn't Todd Phillips walk away with a massive payday, its simple business. He negotiated it, he made a play for it, he risked big and he won the game.

I believe that for doing some film work, one has to be paid at least a living wage to survive. It can be just a basic salary agreed upon to pay for one's rent, utilities, gas, insurance, etc. and then the rest will be based on the profit-sharing or an agreed upon percentage. Woody Allen operated on a lower budget because he made it known that all actors will get paid a certain amount only and yet established actors want to be cast in his films.

@Dan-wb3ed5 жыл бұрын
100% agree. I kinda got a problem with athletes and hollywood making 20 mil, 100 mil, whatever for a few months of work. Not that they dont deserve to be millionaires, sure tons of em do and I'm sure a lot of them work their ass off. But 100mil for a few months? Like, one million is a whole lot of money....you need 100 times that? You worked that hard? When theres doctors performing open heart surgery multiple times a year for 150k. Or marines on a battlefield. Or firefighters, or emts, etc. You work harder then all them? Now that said I'm happy for Phillips. SOME people do deserve a ridiculous amount of money by making intelligent or risky decisions, by working their ass off for years and finally catch a break, or for the fact they create something that ends up being loved by millions and blows up. The rock, kevin hart, kevin fiege, etc...they deserve every penny they got. Their incredible work ethic just oozes out of them. If someone makes some risky moves in the stock market or gambling they deserve however much they get. And imo Phillip's took a big risk put his heart into a product he trusted which became something he never expected and paid off. So congrats, you made some smart moves sir. And btw, I've called Phillip's becoming a underrated director years ago. Hangover is arguably one of the best comedies ever made, but seeing war dogs is what really got me. To me, that movie screamed untapped potential and showed the guy has some real talent for this. And what do you know his next movie is considered for Oscar's and is the 2nd highest profitable comic book movie of all time which cant be said enough how big of a accomplishment that is considering how much the genre makes.

I don't mind as much in this case. This is reflective of what capitalism is about. Not hoarding wealth, though partly matching risk to reward. If you didn't think Joker was gonna make more than $500m your evaluation of films might be a bit off. Maybe in the conceptual phase sure it's a hard sell/guess. The moment I saw his wardrobe I was sold. During the trailer I got an immediate sense of oh shit this is gonna be like Deadpool in regards to success. For R rated films currently, Deadpool set the tone and formula of success. Stay true to the fucking source material and if you skew away from it, that's ok but no so far that it alienates the people who will vouch for it. I personally vouch films to roughly 10 to 15 ppl based on my recommendations over the years who will go out and spend $11 to $25 on a movie not to mention concessions where a total night is $30 to $200. Imagine that happening a 100 to 200 times. I'm saying it only takes 100 to 200 dedicated fans to influence these movies. That's easily $13k to $26k in a night not including concessions which go to the theater. With this movie you're talking Joker in a R rated film shiiiit and you don't know if it's going to be good? It's 2019 nearly 2020. Directors (good ones) have figured it out. There's too much material and reference points to fuck up nowadays. If you do, that's a damn shame. Deadpool proved that a low budget with talent is proof that it can be done. The marketing dollars can be put to better use.
