Top Gun Maverick cost $170M to make, which means it would have needed at least double that amount to break even for Paramount. And then, Paramount needs to make $125M more on top of that before Tom Cruise could even sniff that 10% 1st-dollar gross. In short, Top Gun Maverick needed to make $465M minimum for it to have been a pretty reasonable deal for Tom Cruise. And before the first screenings of this film came out, how many people really banked on Top Gun Maverick making considerably more than half a billion when Tom Cruise's ceiling was $700M for MI Fallout? They say hindsight is 20/20 and we make the mistake of judging decisions made in the past based on the information we know now. So while it seems like Tom Cruise was very shrewed in his contract negotiations considering Top Gun Maverick might just end up grossing 1.3B when all is said and done (it's most likely breaking 1.2B this weekend), if we judge things from their perspective before 2020, Tom Cruise actually made a huge gamble. He went all in and won pretty big. That's really fair play to him.
@leadlefthand2 жыл бұрын
@@joeybaseball7352 - Just because he's rich doesn't change the fact that it was still a big gamble. Plus, rich people are even more meticulous when it comes to profits and losses. And for an Actor like Tom Cruise, $12.5M as a base salary for the amount of work he put in even before production began, that's a pretty small number, especially when considering that Jack Nicholson was making far more than that in the 80s. At the end of the day, even the rich don't want to lose out on their income.

Tom Cruise has made approximately $600 Million Dollars in royalty payments over his long and successful career, but $100 Million is still an insane and record breaking amount for a single movie payout. He deserves it for this film, Top Gun is one of the greatest Blockbusters of our time.

Let's not forget Tom isn't just the actor he is a credited producer, he brought on Chris McQuarrie to work on the script, he brought on Joe Kosinski to Direct and he leads by example on every movie he is involved in. I don't think the younger actors would have been as involved in training had Tom himself not participated and lead. The reward is insanely huge but this guy busted his ass to get this movie to become a theatrical experience that the vast majority is loving.

Even the message from Tom, before the film even started was sincere & heartwarming. Glad to c an actor of his caliber secure a big win like this. Well, Tom Cruise has made over $1b in career earnings as per a recent Forbes article and he doesn’t even do ads or sponsorships. His only income source is his salary and producing credits on stuff like MI, Jack Reacher & Top Gun. He makes over $70m for the MI movies too. For his space movie which is about to start shooting, Cruise will make a $60m salary upfront along with backend points. So, John’s “His income on Top Gun probably exceeds his combined salary on all his other movies” is way off lol…

If the choice for Paramount was either paying Cruise $100 million or either not making the film or not making the film with him then I would pay the $100 million. If Cruise were not involved this would have been a weak sequel that would have been done with a ton of CGI and considered a flop.

He earned every penny. The man was probably handed 100s (at least) of subpar scripts over the decades for this sequel and could've easily cashed in long ago. He is the heart and soul of this film/franchise. Without Tom, this would've been another typical action film. Love him or hate him, this man aims to make films that people enjoy. Whatever check he's getting for this film, he probably deserves even more. This film would simply not be as good or make as much money without Tom being in it. Especially with the level of control that he has gained throughout his extraordinary career, to make the demands that propelled this film past typical sequel fluff to a film that even leaves the original in the dust.

Movie making is highly profitable if you are a famous actor. Hollywood movies are for international audiences. He is an international celebrity and english being an international language is an advantage. He started out as a young relatively unknown but then Top gun came along and it propels him to international stardom. dvantage.
