I really enjoy your videos and how calm you are with the dogs and the stock. I have what I feel is a very well bred dog (his top side is from a well known and successful breeder/trainer here in Montana and his dam's side goes back to a well known breeder/trainer in Wales, UK, he is 18 months old) with lots of drive and potential, my biggest problem is slowing him down. I can't let him off leash with cows or sheep because he is instantly right on them nipping heels of sheep or getting big mouthfuls of wool from their sides and biting noses on cows that face him. He knows Come By, Away, Lie Down, and That'll Do, With Me to quit and leave them. I'm going to start working him on a longer lead, say a 30' rope instead of an 8' leash, and see how that goes. He jerked the leash out of my hands the other day and I was able to get him to lie down from a dead run into the middle of the sheep without a whole lot of yelling so I think I'll get there but holy cow this is wearing me out. A number of friends have told me to use a shock collar on him but I have never believed in those, just like I don't beat on dogs, horses, kids or employees, plus I got him from a good friend who breeds occasionally, trains a lot and would absolutely disown me if I did. How long do your training sessions typically last with a dog his age? I have been trying to do just about 10 minutes, once or twice a day and end on a good note. That seems to be the sweet spot where he calms down enough to listen better but hasn't gotten frustrated yet. I have to build fence to make a living and just have a few cows in a starter herd hoping for a working retirement in ten years or so. Of course by then I'll need to start another dog. Longer sessions at either end of the day would be more feasible for me than trying to get him on stock more times during the day, but I'll do whatever I need to do to get past this now while he is young enough to be trainable. Thanks again.
