It's kinda ironic that the media is whipping up such a frenzy about this movie potentially causing violence or mass-murders, considering a major subplot in the actual movie revolves around how the media intentionally whips up a frenzy in people by completely inventing a story about Arthur/Joker for the sole purpose of entertainment and selling more newspapers. Arthur kills those Wall Street guys because they are being assholes to him on the train. He has no political motive, but the media immediately portrays him as a clown-masked vigilante standing up against those who represent wealth/power in Gotham, and Thomas Wayne further exacerbates the situation by appearing on the news to call poor people "clowns", thus sparking a bunch of protests (and eventually full-blown riots) in Gotham because all the disenfranchised, unemployed, down-and-out people finally have a 'figure' to inspire them (Arthur and the clown motif) and a figure to aim their anger at (Thomas Wayne and the rich upper class). And when Arthur/Joker gets up onto the police car in that final scene and dances in front of an adoring clown-masked crowd, while Thomas and Martha Wayne's bodies lay dead in the alley nearby, it's almost humorous when you realize that it never would have gotten to that point if the media didn't use Arthur's initial murders to invent a narrative about a rich-hating clown-masked vigilante in the first place. But god forbid our real-world media pays any attention to THAT, because then they would have to admit that they do often create/inflate stories where there are none (like inventing the whole controversy about this movie being a disturbed love-letter to incels that promotes violence) with the aim of inciting fear/anger/hatred/etc in people because all they care about is getting more clicks, more readers, more revenue. And that's not even going into all the stuff about mental illness, the mental health sector, funding cuts (and how it affects people), the life-long effects of abuse and neglect, the people in power (like Thomas Wayne) who say they care yet their actions show the opposite, and how our society treats those who don't fit into the mold of "normal, employable person". That's a whole 'nother can of worms.

I feel that this entire film is a slight of hand (and yes, I AM reading a lot into it): 1. We "see" Arthur being given a .38 caliber handgun, but we "hear" that he actually tried to buy it off of his friend. 2. We "see" Arthur getting jumped with the sign, but we "hear" that he may have taken it because "who would jump someone for a sign?" 3. We "see" Arthur frustrated that his social worker didn't remember him telling her that he was seeking a career as a comedian, but we "hear" the social worker deny that he ever told her. 4. We "see" Arthur in a sterilized white room at the beginning of the film (which, with the film's editing, suggests that he was hospitalized prior to what we see because, "...who knows?") but we "hear" him ask the Arkham state hospital clerk how one gets admitted there - to which the orderly tells him "Some people just have no place to go - they don't know what to do." So take the story how you will. I don't think that anybody is right or wrong in their interpretations of the film. And THAT'S its greatest strength - generating discussion.

I also wanted to add, the bathroom scene with Thomas Wayne. When Thomas punched Arthur Fleck in the nose, it looks like he may have broken it due to the blood. The very next scene when he enters the fridge his nose seems to be ok. Furthermore the very next day when he gets a phone call from Murray Show his nose seems to be perfectly fine, no bruise nor it was swollen. Did he imagine that scene with Thomas Wayne in the bathroom?
@cytheolympian27065 жыл бұрын
I believe that people want to cling to truth in every story, so when an unreliable protagonist tells you one thing but the film shows you another, you've every right to question what you're seeing. But the brilliance of the film is that this ambiguous narrative is emblematic of the Joker character. Todd Philipps described this film as a "theory" of what would drive Mr. Chips to becoming Joker. We shouldn't take this story at face value the way that Martin is trying to. Clinging to what you want to believe is exactly the film's point. Even with what this film shows us about the character, the Joker's origin STILL remains multiple choice.
@razzle24295 жыл бұрын
The movie is also an excellent portrayal of how warped reality can feel for a person with severe mental illness and/or neurological disorders. Most people only have one 'truth' - they see the world, for the most part, as the world is. That's what Martin wanted to see. But people like Arthur Fleck can't even trust what they are seeing as real. Arthur is an unreliable narrator for the audience...and for himself. You leave the movie wondering what the hell was real and what wasn't...which is only a glimpse of how Arthur feels every day of his life.
@cytheolympian27065 жыл бұрын
@@razzle2429 Couldn't agree more!
@frankjohnson1235 жыл бұрын
I definitely like the idea of this being one of the "multiple choices" that explain the Joker's origin. However, for that to be true, at least a decent portion of what we saw on the screen has to be true or an exaggeration of the truth within the context of this possibility. If the entire thing was a delusion like some people are claiming, the story loses its impact and its ambiguity.

This is a perfect case study of a conversation between someone who adores a film and someone who didn’t enjoy it. The one who loves it continues to sell all the elements of it, while the one who doesn’t gets more and more agitated that the other person loves it so much, becoming more determined to declare all these elements terrible or badly executed.

That's what I loved about this movie, no one was reliable, not his mom, not him, not Thomas Wayne. Dude could've really been the son of Thomas Wayne. Think about it, what could've he really done if Thomas Wayne was his dad, he has no money, he's already been committed, he was the perfect victim for abuse from his mother and his supposed farther.
@agentblackacid5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. And here's another thing, Arthur suffered from the same delusions as his mother. There are certain psychiatric illnesses that are hereditary so it's definitely possible he was her son and hallucinated stealing the file and seeing the adoption certificate. None of this story is concrete and it's all up for debate.

I don't know why nobody is talking about the line of dialoge where the mother says "they made me sing some documents" when she was arguing with Arthur, maybe she was referring to the adoption papers or something else, that line is never explained in the movie, but is a good point to bring up into the discussion. Personally I don't think T.W is his father.

Thank you. It's FIRMLY established that Penny Fleck was delusional. If Thomas Wayne really was the father of that baby, and didn't want anyone to find out, and TRULY was a rich scumbag, he would have just had her murdered. People are giving this warmed-over Taxi Driver WAY too much credit for being something it's not. For the record, I actually liked the movie ok. But there are a LOT of problems with it. A LOT. Martin actually liked it more than I did, in fact. Maybe people slamming him on here only imagined he gave it a Matinee?

The most powerful message of this movie is that "you are the creator of your own destruction" Thomas Wane cretated his own demise by impregnating that women, creating the child that would grow up to kill those rich people, sparking the riot that killed him in the end. but also creating The Batman.

I'm kinda surprised by Martin having such an aversion of interpreting the movie in a figurative way, seeing as how his knowledgeable with comic books. The multiple possible conflicting events that happened during the film realized the line from from the Killing Joke so well, which is that you can't never trust him to tell the complete truth. Like the saying goes, "we are all heroes in our story", this Joker in his own mind certainly feels that way.The way it was possibly implied - and not on an overt way-is what makes the film craft so brilliant

I thought the Thomas Wayne conspiracy was really interesting because he's normally portrayed as this saintly philanthropist. I like it especially when you imagine Bruce remembering his father as a good man and lionizing his memory in his crusade as Batman. It also really impressed me how the Waynes deaths were part of the culmination of the story of Gotham much more than Joker, with Joker being responsible but very indirectly.

I have seen so much hype, both good and bad, about the new #Joker film and I just want to say a few things about it. 1. The movie is far from the most violent film I've ever seen (Rambo Last Blood was straight up murder porn for the final 20 minutes) and the media is going out of it's way to sell the idea that seeing it in a theater full of people will somehow put lives at risk. We live in a country where going to get groceries or going to an ELEMENTARY school might be the last thing you ever do. It's irresponsible to keep pushing this narrative and just plain wrong. 2. People are saying that Joker makes you feel for the villian in the movie thus causing you to root for the murdering clown. Without spoiling it, YES you can't help but be sympathetic towards Arthur and the horrible events that took place early on in his life BUT you definitely shouldn't be rooting for him once a specific line is crossed. If you do find yourself rooting for him after said line crossing, it may be time to talk to someone about what's going on in your life. Seriously. With that out of the way, I've spent the past few days thinking about this film 🤔 It's shot beautifully, the score is haunting and incredibly effective and Joaquin Phoenix delivers an absolutely powerful performance as the incredibly damaged Arthur Fleck. What needs to be in the conversation surrounding this film is mental health services, class disparity and above all else APATHY and the effects it has on our society as a whole. The movie holds up a mirror to society and it seems quite a few people aren't liking what they see. I have a suggestion for all of the people prejudging the film or just saying that it glorifies violence, go out and try to EMPATHIZE with your fellow man. See what you can do to lift up those that are destitute and powerless. Try to provide some positive reinforcement and above all else just SEE people because more than anything people just need to be seen (and heard). In short, I loved this film and I was seriously uncomfortable for the majority of it as I think you are supposed to be. That's how I know Todd Philips and company knocked this out of the park. I can't help but think it will earn Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar nomination. He is now tied with Heath Ledger in regards to the best portrayal of the Joker on screen. I could go on and on in finer detail about this film but I'll leave you all with this brilliant idea, BE YOUR OWN CRITIC and take a moment to look into the mirror 😉

@R.I.P BLVS AND BEYOND That's awesome to hear! Topics like this should be the the jumping off point in regards to this film. I think it is incredibly brave of you to talk about this. I wish more people were unafraid to talk about mental health but we all know the bs stigma that surrounds the topic. Stay positive and never be afraid to ask for help when you need ✊
