Just to clarify two things about the fight for you real quick 1) Arsene not showing up was due to Gold Experience causing Joker’s Persona breaking and thus being unable to use it for a time, hence why Joker got staggered right after and was left open 2) Personas and Users are directly linked together. So the reason why Joker was left open was due to Gold Experience putting Life Energy into Arsene, which caused Joker to experience the effects Also, one part which I understand you not getting since you haven’t played Persona 5 is when Joker was put into the Death Loop. The scene of him sat at the table with the gun was a 1 for 1 reference to when Akechi had manipulated Joker by pretending to be his friend, and shoots Joker through the head, “Killing him”. So for Death Battle to do that, Joker essentially was about to experience his own death again, but with the power of his friends, broke through it and won, which imo is one of the rawest moments in any Death Battle.

Regarding Giorno's character, there's a reason many consider Bucciarati to be the true protagonist of part 5. Like sure, there's a big analysis when it comes to fate in part 5 and everything (granted fate does play a pretty important role in nearly every Jojo part), but that's kind of more related to the gang members than Giorno himself. And yeah, Giorno is a protagonist, but does show some Dio tendencies such as his ambition, willingness to kill, and cruelty to those that admittedly deserve it. He's a polarizing protagonist not because of his lineage, but because it feels like they didn't take advantage of it and he feels a bit underutilized compared to other protags.

Fun fact they downplayed the hell out of Joker to even make the fight possible. Maruki’s persona is literally a better version of GER because he can on top of denying reality also manipulate reality to his will and joker still beat him and Maruki even admits if he tried to redo the fight over again he would still lose everytime also denying reality is still a form of reality manipulation which Joker negates out right. Unshaken Will automatically prevents the user from being inflicted with any mental-type effect. Alice's Die form me! Is an insta kill. Joker should have taken 0 damage he could have changed to a persona that blocks or drains physical damage and he could have at any point used an almighty attack sinful shell is nowhere near the games only one. He is a humble person who has a genuinely altruistic goal but he also is one of the most violent members of the Joestar family who mercilessly killed every single enemy he faced, not to mention he is literally a mob boss. As for the loner wolf part, he ain't really that (he appreciates his friends a lot and they are a big part of his life) but he never really says it out loud. Giorno developed a trauma after being abuced daily by his father which made him almost never show his emotions (in fact the only time he cries in the entire series is when he is in Narancia's body). While I agree wholeheartedly with the conclusion, the reasoning behind Joker's victory is one of the weaker arguments one could make in his favor. Joker's identity as both a Wildcard and a Trickster both individually grant him ample resistance against Golden Experience Requiem's abilities, from causality (effect) erasure and power nullification, to willpower manipulation. Furthermore, the concept of the Wildcard is an integral narrative element of the entire Persona series, and The Trickster is a fundamental character archetype (in a literary sense) in Persona 5 itself. The argument of Almighty attacks bypassing the Omnipotent Orb, while not incorrect, draw from (canon) sources outside of Joker's main appearances and also concludes his victory through a common verse mechanic, instead of through abilities more intrinsic to himself.

The visuals, musuc, and way their abilities are used are pretty cool. The ending was really cool too. For the post-analysis I kinda wish they talked about potential fate manipulation on GER's end since the corner box implies they buy into the idea that the death are something it can do on contact rather than needing to deal a killing blow, thus giving Giorno an on-paper win move going into the animation, but still giving Joker the win because defying fate is kind of his thing. Maintaining frienships unlocks more abilities in game, and it is directly said that these frienships are HIS power, and he's even allowed to bring his friends into strictly 1 on 1 fights in game for this reason 3. Okay, to get it out of the way, coming from someone whose favorite game of all time is Persona 5 and who knows nothing of JoJo's (I will check it out one day, my interest in it is growing) I overall loved this episode. While yes, there wasn't hardly any story-focused narrative in Joker's analysis, the jokes and the in general seeing my favorite game was more than enough for me. Joker's analysis is really meant for fans of Persona 5 to enjoy so they can cover all the Vs stuff for the casual audience. As for the fight, Arsene looks so incredible! This leads to my first big positive surprise of the fight which was them having Joker use more than just Arsene and Satanael. I was heavily under the impression since it was a Sprite fight and with how good the Arsene sprite was that they would only use Joker's "main" Personas. So I was pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of Alice and Jack Frost (Though I do agree that don't know how Joker figure ice was Giorno's big weakness, but whatever). Then, with Joker dieing and just hearing his friend cheer him on to keep going and win, this means so much to me. Satanael appearance was incredible and Sinful Shell finisher was awesome and I popped TF off with this ending. Genuinely the happiest I've ever felt as a result of a Death Battle on top of everything else as a P5 fan. So while it is subject to go down by one, my knee-jerk feeling is that this episode was 9/10 for me! Prolly nothing will top this experience for me unless they do my most wanted matchup in Tifa Lockhart vs Makoto Niijima. But hey, I'm gonna be pitching it whenever they come around. Will be doing my best and all I can do is hope that the DB team remains interested in the matchup come time in 3-4 years for the 3rd and final FF7 game remake to come out and who knows if another new Persona game will come out around the time to bring the hype for this matchup lol. But yeah, love the review as always Nem~!

Just to explain some things from my interpretation. Persona’s are an extension of one’s self, “Thou are I, and I art thou.” So when GE hit Arsene, that’s when Joker got affected by the accelerated consciousness. But the bee is funny. Arsene disappearing was meant to be him getting knocked out to my knowledge. And a persons getting knocked out dazes the user, which is how Giorno got the opportunity for the Full Nelson. I totally forgot about Giorno’s ice weakness too, wow that should’ve been mentioned in the episode. GER massive punch rush against Joker before killing him was a reference to the Anime’s 7 second Muda Rush, which is perhaps Giorno’s most iconic moment. In the Manga, it was a 7 page Muda Rush. I can understand that I could’ve been more dynamic, but that Muda Rush was definitely a necessity to have. I actually really love your interpretation of Joker escaping the death loop. I’m sure it’s meant to be Joker using the power of friendship to revive since that is what the analysis mentioned. However, Joker escaping the death loop by defying its fate with his Will of Revellion is sooooooooo much cooler. And it mimics a similar moment in P5, especially since Levensia makes a quick cameo to further drive in that reference. And last bit, Giorno 100% did not hear Joker say “Checkmate” the first time since he said that while in accelerated conscious. So imagining Giorno thinking “when was the first time you sai-“ then dying is funny to me.
@for_the_lore55672 ай бұрын
I think they used the Social Link to revive him cause it would be easier to visualize than Satanael's passive abilities Unshaken Will and Survival Trick, which would protect him from RTZ's will draining ability and allow him to survive an insta-death attack with 1 HP respectively.

Arsene didn't really die. In P4A, when a Persona takes enough damage, they go into this remission state where the user can't call upon them for a while. Unsure how this would affect a wildcard with multiple Personas (Since Yu only uses Izanagi in P4A), but yeah, Personas only really die when their user dies.

In the Game Over sequence after GER KO's Joker, I'd have included some shots of Joker dying in other situations, both as a student and as a Phantom Thief, to signify that he's caught in a death loop. I did predict that Joker was gonna break out of GER's death loop, but it didn't really look like a death loop in the same way as when Thanos got caught in Darkseid's Omega Sanction. Like, here are some things I would have liked to see: Joker getting vaporized by Galeem, being crushed by past Shadows, actually getting shot in that Game Over sequence (I won't go into any more details because those are some major spoilers). But, I could understand if the animation limitations prevented them from doing a more detailed death loop. And I do agree, I believe Joker did die from GER but he just got better.

I fucking love this fight honestly and they did the best they could do with the complications that came up but I do believe this fight deserved to be in another season tbh, neither characters got to show off a lot of their full potential and the sprite work was amazing but a little janky when put into action. Edit: Also I will add on I don’t really remember Giorno really getting up close and personal himself in his fights, the only punching ghost Jojos I recall doing that is Josuke Jolyne Gappy Jotaro and Johnny to some extent, however in the JJBA Part 3 arcade game, tag teaming with your stand with tandems is indeed a thing so, honestly I found that party pretty fucking awesome, do wish it was closer to the storyboards though.

Your interpretation of Joker breaking out of the death loop is actually pretty good, not to mention it actually fits within the narrative of Persona 5. One of the biggest themes of it is rebellion, and the willpower that a rebel holds. In this moment, Joker was effectively put into a "prison" of infinite death, but with his rebellious will, and the support of his friends, he completely broke free of this "prison."

Talking about Joker's analysis, I know it seems short but Joker's story, for the most part, is central in 3 arcs (the first arc, and the last 2 arcs. Maruki's on top of that when mentioning Royal) which they covered pretty accurately without going too deep or crazy. The rest of the arcs in the game, much like Persona 4, focus on other party members and their stories. I know you did bring up how they didn't mention Giorno's weakness to ice but also to add to this, Ice Age is one of the strongest Ice attacks in the series and also implies that Jack Frost is lvl 99 here. You're also right that you dont get any exp when your lvl 99 (like mentioned before, Jack Frost being lvl 99 and having Ice Age implies that Joker is lvl 99).

I think the reason for the barebones story analysis for Persona 5 isn't because it's a super basic, barebones story. It's kind of the opposite. It's such a huge, kind of convoluted story with so many moving parts with bits that seem totally unimportant ending up crucial to the overarcing plot. For them to give even the most barebones overview of it in a way that makes ANY sense at all would probably double the length of Joker's analysis at least. I love it, but by the gods, it's DENSE.

The thing with the Bees is basically what Giorno does all the time in his series. The idea that he can turn the inanimate objects into living creatures and have the perfect execution to it. The Bees was a fun way to show it here, but you had other things like "Turning an object into a poisonous snake to track down and bite the stand user" and even "Shooting a guy in the head and having the bullet turn into a beetle to emerge out of the guy's head". It is a fun time and honestly this definitely was an enjoyable episode to watch (in spite of how one sided it was). You let Giorno show what he can do while you give the Joker fans what they want to see. And how in the end, those who put too much focus on GER did forget that Joker did have a means to actually overwrite it because of course he did. I was ok with Bardock vs Omniman, but this definitely felt like the opening to a new season.

So the way the fight is starting, if you know about persona 5 joker basically entered giorno's palace. Also joker was slowed in time because of the clash with arsene. The Teddy bear's are Alice's ultimate attack in p5 but it's up to preference if you find them out of place or w.e. I didn't even know about the ice weakness, nor did death battle explain it but joker clearly figured it out using intelligence. He sees he can create life, what can pause life? A literal ice age. Joker probably did die but if you look at the lines on his face, his will power was drained to zero as well and basically his friends brought him back from the brink. The 0 exp is probably a reference to return to 0.

"maybe joker's story is that bare bones" actually it's the opposite, it's to long and layered to satisfyingly cover, and considering not even persona fans give joker enough credit on how strong he is, as a persona fan i am much more happy with them focusing on his feats than trying and failing to cover his story.

Putting this in another comment, but I just LOVE how they focused and showcased Golden Experience's abilities pre-Requium. Looking into GER and finding out first-hand how much of a HEADACHE it is to scale RTZ and how big its scale is (please don't I hated every second of it lmao), it's really nice how there was a huge focus on GE's standard abilities, and how creative they can get with it. It's better than those VS Animations that have Giorno start with GER off the bat, as that takes me out of the fight immediately and know that's all they're gonna focus on. Even if GER's the main focus of the verdict, I still appreciate how much they showcased GE's normal abilities in the fight. (God, that piano though in the track when GER DOES appear? MMMMM, you get one point GER, just one)

3:12 Well, while P5 has a rather packed story with a lot of notable characters that could have easilly made Joker's analysis keep on for too long if they tried to emphisize the plot more, you're honestly kinda right about Joker as a character. While his side bars have a few funny gags about small gameplay touches on his character such as his like for older women (6 out of 10 of his potential girlfriends being older then him to varying degrees), his dislike for chalk (there's a teacher that constantly throws chalk at him because he believes Joker isn't paying attention in class) and "surviving the Valentine's Day massacre" being in his feats section (in case you don't know, Joker gets his ass kicked on Valentine's Day if he has more then 1 girlfriend by that point), he's mostly a self insert protagonist in P5 and unlike Makoto Yuki and Yu Narukami he's not given much of an established personality in spin offs either because he's usually kept as a silent self insert. Heck, even the anime adaptation keeps him relatively bland from what i've heard (haven't seen the P5 anime as of yet, just going off of what i've heard about it from other Persona fans), which is odd to me given that the expansion on Yu's character was one of the most well liked things about the P4 anime.

Joker changing your heart doesnt necessarily mean youre a villain. He changes the hearts of people who become distorted. For example, Maruki creating an alternate universe where characters who died are still alive was a distorted desire because Maruki was refusing to accept a world where people suffered. Theres also cases of people becoming fans to the point of obsession. That obsession while not necessarily villainous is a distortion.

I liked the fight but i feel like they couldve put more of their personality into the battle, despite alot of people saying Giorno and Joker not really havin personality, there is a anime for Persona 5 that does give Joker a "canon" personality and Giorno despite being a static character development wise, does have like his own philosophies and morals that make him alot more interesting than he was shown to be in the battle.
@mechamanw6683 ай бұрын
Something to add on the Storyboards bit, you never mentioned the way it ends. For this battle to work realistically, Joker would have to fight Giorno's shadow in the Metaverse, which it's implied what he did. It's been a while since I played P5 so I may be foggy on how it works, but when you kill someone's shadow in the Metaverse, that person's mind gets crushed and they're essentially left in a vegetative state (correct me if I'm wrong, please) In the storyboard's ending, it show's the real Giorno actually succumbing to the effects of his shadow dying, just for the real GER to negate that effect. This makes Giorno one of the only losers to not really die in a Death Battle, technically

For the character of Joker,the modern Persona games are 50% visual novel/dating sim and 50% JRPG. You have a calendar with story progression at specific dates, and everything you do in the meantime is your choice. Your dialog options,who you choose to interact with,and what stats you choose to upgrade all take a time slot.Even certain game mechanics are locked behind or massively upgraded by friendship levels.

In regards to why Joker used Jack Frost's Ice Age attack, it was likely cause he wanted to fully shut down Gold Experience's ability, as in, GE wouldn't be able to pump life energy into anything period no matter what the object is. There are Personas that full on shut down opponent's abilities. Whether that was the case idk, cause I'm not familiar with if Jack Frost is one of those Personas that can just be like "You're not allowed to do your signaturw stuff."
@dbfan1993 ай бұрын
Ice age was used because Golden experience can not create life at -100 C.

The reason Arsene disappears is because Persona can be broken. Which only affects Jokers stamina, they mentioned that in Jokers analysis in regards to fighting game and manga thought. He basically just returned Arsene to Joker and then Joker switched out Persona's to Alice. Plus Joker literally says that he brings out Jack Frost to counter its life creation abilities.

Super late to this, but describing Giorno as a lonewolf type character would be accurate, as he really has no personality to him, he helps occasionally, heck I don't even think he has many lines throughout Part 5 and many other side characters easily surpass him on the amount of lines he gets in the part.
@water27703 ай бұрын
This is the kind of battle that is decided on one factor and that is whether or not GER works, and that is determined by a ton of different factors. For instance does Giorno have a shadow/palace allowing them to fight in the metaverse? Would Giorno having the shadow/palace boost him in anyway considering the power level of the shadows is considerably stronger than the people they are based on. If it was Joker Real Life vs Giorno would Joker be able to do half the things he could in the metaverse (I think he probably can't or else he'd never need to use a train/car to get from place to place). How does the mechanics of GER work exactly and would Almighty really counter return to 0? One other bit of scaling that didn't make sense was saying "Joker can tank a shooting star going a million times faster than the speed of light!" in a turn based rpg. Based on scaling the numbers alone wouldn't that mean base Joker with just a knife could rend the planet in twain at the start of the game if he aimed at the ground or something like that? and considering the whole rpg part of the rpg takes place in a metaverse where perception dictates a lot shouldn't that throw a monkey wrench in scaling anything when the phantom thieves could just go "Nah, no way it could be THAT bad"
@dbfan1993 ай бұрын
I don't see why they wouldn't just scale shadow Giorno based off Real Giorno. yes technically he would be stronger, but VS debates take the character's at their peak. So it'd be weird to give him an ambigious buff just to make the fight work. "Based on scaling the numbers alone wouldn't that mean base Joker with just a knife could rend the planet in twain at the start of the game if he aimed at the ground or something like that?" Attack potency doesn't always equate to destructive capability. IE the strenght at which joker is hitting doesn't mean how much destructive potential his attacks have. Also I'd like to point out morning star was Joker's own move. And it's a move preformed by a persona weaker then Satanael, and a Persona yaldaboth can overpower. Yadaboth who joker withstood several blows from.

For clarity's sake, Alice's unique skill, Die For Me! Does have those exploding teddies as the visual representation. It's also a potential instant-kill, meaning Joker was going for the throat after getting his shit rocked but having that plan countered by the beanstalks.

While I greatly enjoyed the episode, I do have 2 major complaints: 1. The analyses. Joker's in particular was way too vs focused and should have taken the time to acknowledge more of his journey (at least in the vanilla P5). Talk about how he constantly reached out to people struggling and oppressed like him (confidants). Mention how he found and beat the politician that ruined his life in a sick 1v1. Even just touching on the conflict with Yaoldaboath a bit more could have saved it, as it would have shown more of Joker's ideology. Even then, some of the vs stuff which could have been relevant to the fight was skipped. Stuff like Repel Phys (auto-reflect) or ailments like rage (forced to only attack) or forget (sealing away GER) could have been brutal for Giorno, and yet are ignored. As for Giorno, they just needed to put more emphasis on his brutal yet righteous sense of justice, his connection with Team Bucciarati and the ice weakness for his life creation. 2.The death loop. The one shot of Joker in the interrogation room, showing a time he faked his death as now coming true, is really cool and well animated, but they could have gone so much harder with it. Show him die multiple times or do what the corner box in the results suggested and have him briefly sojourn to the Velvet Room, where he fuses Satanael (instead of just summoning him, meaning he could have ended the fight right from the beginning).
@tristanbowles72583 ай бұрын
In the Death Loop scene, we actually do see Lavenza in blue butterfly form and hear her speak saying “I art thou, and thou art I” so I fully believe its implied Joker popping in the Velvet room to get Satinial real quick. @lozo10063 ай бұрын
Yeah I do agree that this felt very skewed. But not exactly wrong. It felt like a very what matters in the fight instead of selling you on the characters kinda death battle. Like Silver Surfer vs Martian Manhunter as a good example. Here you basically get a idea of Persona but not really anything of Giorno or even the arrow which is a major player for Giorno in general. Tho the big one for me is the black boxes. Correction tho for death battle. Creator of Jojo supervised the story not created it for Eyes. Not that it matters too much in this case. One is knowing that Death Battle rules that some stuff in Jojo does just beat out GER which. I find neat just cause yeah. That stuff would actually bypass it from what I understand of the community. Tho for Joker the moment they ruled that personas like Jack Frost or Lucifer will use SMT scaling is insane. Basically Persona protags just have Shiva's canonical universe destruction and creation in their back pocket. P1 Protag whos basically a jobber by Megaten or basically SMT and Persona has greater feats then most of Dragon Ball.

It was a fine episode but I would make some things diferently. I feel death battle episodes could benefit from being 1 or 2 minutes longer and it could be the reason why I saw somr people feel it being rushed or lacking and the episode leaves me with some doubts. Not trying to argue the conclusion is wrong, I dont care that much due to the controversy, me not having played Persona yet and everyone will have its own takes so it is an aspect i dont care about but it i think something the episode needed was to give a good reasoning as to why they decide the winner yet it gives some questions: if the fight takes place at the metaverse wouldnt Giorno be able to also draw power from it? Wouldnt the social link stuff and Satanael count as outside help? What would happen if Joket hit Giorno's life forms with almighty abilities? Etc... perhaps Persona players already know the answer but the episode dosent really answer it for those who didnt play wich leaves the feeling of having an incomplete reasoning wich was needed for this episode and while i dont care who the winner is as long as it good at best dosent explain things properly and at worst it breaks its own rules wich is definetly something to worry about. I do not acuse them of doing so but the lack of explanation may make feel like that wich is not good. As for the fight itself while it had a few stiff movements it was great and well animated, but I also would have liked to have something different. I would have liked to have an actual Jojo fight, one of wich would take the iq plays and bullshitery from the manganime paired with the antincs from the Persona series, something that could have happend due to the diferent abilities of the diferent personas. We only got that at the ending of the Jonathan vs Tanjiro fight and this would have a good oportunity for that (I guess we will have to wait for Joseph vs Shikamaru for that) and while it was nice to see Joker freeze things to counter Giorno life creations as it happend in JoJo thats only it, I guess I cant really complain since the fight was good but I would still have preferred something like that. As for the characters per se it could be a me thing but Giorno dosent really feel as its own character in the fight, it feels more as just an oposing force to Joker, a good one at that yes, but he feels incomplete in that regard to me. You have the mention to his dreams but thats just a very basic mention to his character and while i like the fight taking place in his palace (i couldnt be otherwise) i find it lacking in that regard. Artistically speaking I perhaps would expect them to have few more color pallete swaps or a bit more of Persona's HUD's and transitions but I am fine with what we got. Perhaps I would add a Diavolo gag or them having a fourth wall break having them giving Giorno the win and starting the analysis to then have Joker break from it and coming back to the battle to change the ending as he did. But I get that these things would be dificult to implement properly and that you cant ask too much due to budget reasons and we already had a great spetacle PS: Yeah, while Giorno is ruthless and dosent hesicate to kill those who he deems as evil he is also someone who references Jesus abd acts as a beacon of hope and support to his partners to the point of putting himself in danger most of the time so they can have an advantage while also being the healer of the group. This dicotomy of him being ruthless but also being a gentleman with a heart of gold who saves and values people is the point of his character since he is both the son of Dio and Jonathan
