Clear Sight, Even in the Cold! | Essential Tips to Prevent Foggy and Frozen Glasses

Yes, glasses in winter - that is annoying. I sometimes using contact lens, but after 3-4h they start to make discomfort in my eyes. I am using googles over my glasses. It' s helps a lot. Googles - Lynx Radian protect my eyes (they are very sensitive), glasses and my noise. In darkness I am using white glass for this googles. This variant is best for me at the moment. I can also cover my mouth with buff. For me is no pressure from googles, and it is possible to use headlamp. Just sometimes my glasses start to be foggy, when warm from my face is going out too intensive (active movement), but then I just lift up a little googles to get more ventilation. Googles also safe my eyelids from sharp snow crystals. Thank you for the video!

Chamois is what the skin is called here - thin split of sheepskin. Microfiber versions are available, but I don't know how they compare. My issue over the years was all the heat and sweat built up cross country ski racing, so even more of an issue than slower snowshoeing. Most of those spays are sold for hockey where it is not that cold. The Cat Crap paste was good for a bit, maybe an hour or so. Years ago what I found just as good and cheaper was baby shampoo, carried it in a small squeeze bottle in an inner pocket to not freeze. It needs to be rubbed/polished just a bit to be fairly thin. It is the emulsifier action that is at play. Soap molecules cling to the water molecules. Until they are overloaded. I just had to face the fact I would have to stop one or more times in races and reapply. But that lasted much longer than just wiping, and typically I wouldn't want to take off my gloves. Other soap might work but baby shampoo is tear free, so I prefer that around my eyes.

I have had good luck with a product called Cat Crap which you spread on your lenses before going out. I think it’s just glycerin with maybe a little soap added. Spend on a thin film, let it dry, then polish gently. Not perfect but it does help quite a bit. Also wearing non fogging ski goggles over your glasses works pretty well. And you can get prescription ski goggles. If it’s really windy having a fur ruff around the hood of your jacket also helps a lot. Keeps your face warm without having to wear a face mask. It has to be real fur though, the synthetic ruff doesn’t work.

I wear glasses, this video is very helpful. :) I once wore contacts..disposable ones..out in winter and had to walk some miles. By the time I returned home they'd frozen stiff onto my eyeballs! I sat in front of the stove gently warming up until I could remove them but I've never worn contacts since in winter and won't.

PS the leather cloth is a chamois (shammy) and they're great for cleaning glass and glasses. One tip I tried which worked was to take a *tiny* bit of dishwashing liquid and smear it gently over the lenses. It works kind of like antifreeze and stops ice and moisture sticking to the lenses. Also works on bathroom mirrors!

I have worn contacts since I was a teenager and also in temperatures down to -50 C, but they have never frozen on my eyeballs. Sounds more like your eyes got very dry, and that's why they got stuck. Just put a drop of lens fluid or water in your eye, and they will come loose again 😉. /Stina

I refuse to wear contacts. Wearing glasses in cold weather is kind of a pain. I'm from Minnesota originally and moved to Nordland Norway, so I've had to deal with this for a long time. Thanks for these tips

I would wear eye protection even if glasses were not necessary as one time as a gardener I leant towards a tree and was poked in my eyeball by a fine twig which took a long time to repair and was very painful. The leather cloth is the best idea .

I remember still in my early days up North when I just went for a very short snow mobile drive after work from the camp to my cabin. -37°C and glasses with a tiny metal beam above my nose that just slightly was in contact with my skin. 5 Minutes on the snowmobile and I had wonderful frostbite! 🥶

Hi Matti, good to know for my dogsledding tour in march with you, thank you for these usefull tips. I will try with glasses and contact lenses, don't like both of them. But personnaly I would not do laser eye surgery because I know people with problems after this and also some where it did'nt hold. Others are super happy with..... Looking forward for the tour😊

Good tips. A trucker hat is just one layer; underneath your insulated hat or hood(s). The hat itself does not do much other than hold the bill in place (the part that keeps rain/snow out of your eyes). For cold wind, do you ever use a tunnel hood? Like those wolf-fur things you see military and expedition people use? My understanding is that they slow wind without the fogging problems caused by actually covering the face (like a balaclava or scarf or buff). I would like to find a tunnel hood (without the parka) that I could use with various jackets.

I was using contact lenses for years, but then got my eyes lasered (at Memira) recently. It was not very painful actually, so I can recommend it. It's not super cheap, but as I am also outside daily it was worth it for me.

I don't have to wear strong glasses but I do often have to wear sun shades as I am now rather susceptible to snow blindness due to past. At altitude even when snowing the sun can be too much. Plus I have watery eyes. So I really struggle with this even with good goggles. I'll check out your 'leather' cloth suggestion. What do you think about isopropanol for additional winter cleaning of eyewear?

I have to wear glasses when driving, especially at night, but riding motorcycle in cold is a nightmare for lens fogging! Can't even wear a balaclava to keep head, side of face, cheeks or chin warm. Even tried anti fog coatings etc

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA it was maybe 5 years ago. From my understanding the effects of the surgery last a lifetime and you won't need to have any additional surgery. Only a low % of people ever need additional surgery once they get much older. It is quite expensive of course. But honestly I would have still paid double what I paid and still think it was worth it. My quality of life is just so much better. I think especially for people who are very active outside people it is especially worth the money.

Very annoying with glases in wintertime. Its true that spray products cant fix condensation, per say, but it kan contribute so the condensation distributes in smaller drops on the glas. But dont expect it to solve condensation. Its Will be condensation but just with another form of diminiced visibility. Some think its better I dont! So Im with Matti here: Skip these products!

I allways womder how the extreme snoboarders deal with this. they are allways totally face covered up not even the nose showing . ski goggles they use must be of a kind that never fog up nomatter what circumstances. There are probably very effective coatings they put on these lenses when manufactured. so maybe some young-gun can comment on this? ski goggles can be worn over glasses no problem. cheers.

Yes, I've been thinking about getting a pair of ski goggles to use when it snows a lot. Guess a lot of people will look at me strangely when I'm just on my way to the store, but on the occasions when it snows the most, I actually don't care. Don't know if it helps against the fog, but the snow can in any case be brushed off with the mitten.
