What I like about this song is that the woman singing doesn't blame Jolene for being so beautiful or for seducing men. She's humble and asking for sympathy, instead of angry and jealous like you often see.

I disagree, the original wasn't happy, it was desperate, and in its simplicity lay its strength. It's about a plain Jane woman trying to appeal to a far more glamorous one, and the music and vocals brought that aspect out.
@jamesdicarlo8317
@jamesdicarlo8317 4 жыл бұрын
@@fnglert I agree, my impression as I listened to this cover was that the power of her performance overrode the desperation and vulnerability that Dolly Parton put in it. This is in no way a criticism of Maris' voice, she's a powerhouse!

Very cool arrangement. I love the simplicity of the harp at the beginning and the end. The quiet break where she strums a few chords on the acoustic guitar could have seemed contrived but work perfectly here. And what an interesting voice! Clean and articulate most of the time but she can punch with it and growl a bit too. Very nice!

Ok, I rarely do this, but this one deserves it: Thumbs up, comment and watching it on repeat until I hate it (right now I'd say like ... never?!). It's just ... amazing. The arrangement, the voice, the harp, the playfulness between silent parts and emotionally charged passages. Which album again? Definitely: Need!
