Geoff can sure make the villain come to life - so good. I figured Layne had to be the warthog, with the 3 tenors as the hyenas. Mykal is one of the original guys along with Geoff, Layne and Earl. After they graduated in 1997, they got Scott Porter as the beatboxer and changed the group from 4theLove to 4:2:five since they had 5 people. After about 3-4 yrs, Scott wanted to take up acting so left for the West Coast where he's done a lot of acting and Mykal left to go to Broadway. Both guys have done well. They were short 2 people and they brought on Eli who had been in a nearby school and they competed in the same chorus competitions, after graduation Eli joined some rock bands and in 2010 he joined 4:2:Five which turned into VoicePlay. Layne had been the baritone but when Scott left, Layne got to be the beatboxer. Geoff taught him what he knew and Layne ran with it and hasn't looked back since. Since VoicePlay is centered in Orlando and almost all members have performed for either Disney World or Universal, they really have an incredible group of vocalists to draw on.

Eli is a voice over actor in his other life and does a very good convincing British English accent, (He did the Sandy Claws in Oogie Boogie) and could have done it but of course that wasn't his role in this. Geoff can vary his accent but it's always American as far as I know. I think maybe he could do more (such as when reading to his son) but maybe not when singing.

One of my favorite Web chats to replay is when he reads a book to William in a pseudo German accent. He sounds a lot like the little caterpillar in A Bug’s Life and it is hilarious.

According to those who know, Geoff is singing A1 - A4 chest in this song. (There might be some subharmonics in the backing bass line)
@johndeeregreen45924 ай бұрын
That first A1 from Geoff (on the word "Pride"), was done with glottal compression to create a hint of fry... but that was a stylistic choice and to sell the evil; since we all know Geoff can easily do a clean A1 in full chest. Geoff has been using glottal compression a lot more over the past couple years for intentional emphasis.
@johndeeregreen45924 ай бұрын
Also, there is the E1 subharmonic on the word "unaware", as well. Geoff was good before but his ability to slip in and out of techniques over his full range has gotten to an even higher level in recent years.

Wrong the high pitch of him is B5 which is head voice and chest voice is from G4-F#1 the rest is subharmonic. But tim foust who is the legend here.
@johndeeregreen45924 ай бұрын
@@dennismaina8387, Geoff's highest note ever is an A#5 and that was in falsetto. His chest ends at B4 and his head voice ends around E5.

In the original, Jeremy Irons hurt his voice pretty bad doing “you won’t get a sniff without me”
@janetdw4 ай бұрын
I heard that and looked it up and he actually had to have someone else finish the song after the line “you won’t get a sniff out of me.” Apparently he strained his vocal cords and couldn’t finish the song. I do think it’s funny that the actor who finished, Jim Cummings, also played the voice of Ed the dimwitted hyena. That’s pretty versatile.

By the end of it, it became, "you won't get a riff out of me."

This was always my favorite song from the movie. The other songs were also great, but this one I just truly enjoyed. I think part of it is the humor and the interplay between Scar and his little minions. The line “you won’t get a sniff out of me” is what ruined Jeremy Irons’s voice and he was not able to finish the song. I had heard this earlier so I looked it up. Jim Cummings who also voiced Ed, the dimwitted hyena, actually finished the song for him. So I’m glad that Geoff didn’t try to growl/shout that whole line! Although he is a really nice guy, Geoff makes the perfect Disney villain. I’m especially fond of his male version of Ursula from The Little Mermaid which is probably my favorite medley that they’ve done. The rap portion that you liked was inserted to take the place of all the conversation that happens in the middle of the song and I think it works. I checked your playlist and you have not reacted to their version of Hellfire which is easily Disney’s most evil bad guy. He is truly despicable and it’s another Geoff featured piece that I think you would really enjoy. Good to have you back! You have a lovely bass voice.

Oohh that's interesting, yeah makes sense that staining your voice like that can cause issues, I should probably be more careful with mine XD.

A tip, look at it once more, with tve captions on. It's always wise to have captions on a VoicePlay or Geoff video. They tend to bury jokes in the lyrics, like here. Love your bass voice by the way.
@JollyLegend4 ай бұрын
Ahh interesting, I'm normally a very anti subtitle guy because I just end up focusing on the bottom of the screen and not looking at anything else but I'll keep that in mind for VP videos!
@carinarodebak94194 ай бұрын
@@JollyLegend Geoff puts huge stakes on good captions. His wife Kathy had to end her singing career due to degenerative hearing loss, so it's personal to him that everybody can be fully aware of what's going on in the video. Kathy overcame her problems by becoming the very competent production manager for both VoicePlay and Geoff. Geoff has a very touching video of what hearing loss means for the whole sourrounding family on his channel. Geoffs mischivious humour at the same time have him giving twisting comments in the captions. Go back here and read what the caption says as he does his lion roar near the of his performance, if you already haven't.
