The Ichiro trade actially has a good reason to it. During 2012, the mariners were obviously trying to rebuild. The issue was that Ichiro was still under contract, costing them $18 million a year. Seeing this, Ichiro wanted to leave the team by 2013. He said that the team has so many young players who need to be given a chance and him on the team was preventing that, so he wanted to leave in order to help the team in the long run. Ichiro was a Griffey and subsequently Mariners fan growing up and him wanting to get traded in order to help the team is something that Ichiro would do.
@justinlast2lastharder749
@justinlast2lastharder749 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Ichiro had major issues with the front office. He knew they'd never build a winner and wanted to play in the post season. The Mariners pissing off Ichiro was a pretty common thing, they pushed him to asking for a trade multiple times.

Marco Scutaro mentioned that some of the Giants players started calling him “Blockbuster” because there were all these other massively hyped deals going on, when he was the biggest steal for that year.

One thing to keep in mind: Although he later denied it, Dempster supposedly vetoed a trade to the Braves for Randall Delgado. If that story is true, he did the Cubs a massive favor, even if they didn't know it at the time.
@dqr89
@dqr89 Жыл бұрын
Yep he did indeed veto the braves trade. Also Hendricks wasn’t seen as the prize of the return for the cubs , it was Christian Villanueva who was suppose to had been the prize

He also vetoed a trade to the Cardinals

Based on how poorly he played he did the Braves a favor as well. Delgado would later be included in trade package for Justin Upton. Upton was valuable on the field and later off when traded for Max Fried.

The 2012 deadline was one of my fondest early memories as a baseball fan. I remember listening to the radio in the car after my little league game got rained out and hearing that Ichiro was traded to the yanks.. and watching MLB network on the tiny tv in the kitchen when news broke after 4 pm that Dempster was traded. Thanks for allowing me to relive it all, Jolly🙌

Ive always really liked the content but Id really like to see some stuff outside of this decade. I understand it was his childhood decade when most of us fall in love with the game. Mine was the 90s and the 00s. Would love to see more stuff in the Jolly Olive format that took place in the 70s 80s 90s and 00s. Theres some wild stuff that happened back then that most of the younger viewers of this channel would love to hear about. Steroids were not the only thing that happened in the 90s especially. It was a very different game. Not better or worse, just different.

I know this was in August 2012 after the non-waiver deadline, but don’t forget the Sox traded Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, and Nick Punto to the Dodgers for Allen Webster, Jerry Sands, Rubby De La Rosa, Ivan De Jesus, and James Loney. The Dodgers ate those contracts so it was a salary dump for Boston. None of those prospects panned out. Still makes it feel like we traded prospect Anthony Rizzo out of Boston for nothing (he was traded to acquire Adrian Gonzalez)
@anthonyemerson2965
@anthonyemerson2965 Жыл бұрын
The trade doesn’t feel like a win for either team, because the Dodgers acquired those guys to chase a championship, but never won with any of them. Meanwhile none of the prospects panned out for the Red Sox, but dropping those contracts did set the table for their 2013 additions, which led to a championship for them.

One of my favorite years in baseball. I was 21 and the Yankees were having a great regular season and just kept getting better. Jeter had a career comeback, Andy Pettitte returned, Rafael Soriano was nearly perfect, Ichiro was a fantastic hitter at the top of the lineup. Granderson decided to whack 40 homeruns...again. Miguel Cabrera was showing the world his true peak. Mike Trout was making a splash. Verlander was winning a crazy amount of games. Johan Santana threw a no hitter. Chipper was getting a farewell. Boston was dead despite having a great team on paper.

2012 division series were classics ever series went to game 5. Cardinals had a crazy rally in the 9th to win it against Wash Giants came back 0-2 and won 3 straight in Cincy then came back down 3-1 against Cards im the nlcs...Verlander pitched a gem to beat Oak in game 5 and Yankees traded blows with the O's to advance in game 5. Classic postseason

Victorino didn't come up through the Phillies system. He debuted for San Diego after being rule 5 drafted in 2003, struggled and was returned, and then stuck with the Phillies when LA decided not to take him back after he failed to make the MLB roster out of Spring Training. He spent most of the year with Scranton and won IL MVP, but most of his development took place in the Dodgers system.

This video made me realize that Greinke is still pitching - and he's having a nightmare of a season. He's literally 1-14 he needs to hang it up, he's ruining his HOF numbers. I still think he's pretty much a lock for the HOF though. Great video as usual J.O. One little note - you failed to mention that Dempster won a WS ring with the Red Sox in his last season in 2013.

Ugh, the 2012 trade deadline was a massive disappointment as a Rangers fan. They were trying to ward off the Angels and A's and get back to the World Series but the only move was Ryan Dempster. It was so bad that I was calling it a Ryan Dumpster trade when it was made. Naturally they collapsed afterward and got overtaken by the A's, and haven't done much of anything since.

The Phillies managed to pull off an incredible feat from 2008-2012. They won a WS, then lost a WS, then lost a NLCS, then lost their NLDS, then didn't make the playoffs. The most steady decline in history.

David Cone, Bobby Bonilla, David Wells, Andy Benes, Bret Saberhagen, Rick Aguilera, Scott Erickson, Jim Abbott, Deion Sanders, Dave Burba, Mike Stanton, Ruben Sierra and Danny Tartabull, among others on the move that July.
