Another fun quirk- Longo’s HR barely cleared the low wall in LF, a wall that was lowered in previous years for Carl Crawford to be able to rob more homers, the same Carl Crawford who left for Boston in free agency to have a better shot at deeper postseason runs, of which Boston’s that year was promptly ended by a misplay in LF… by Carl Crawford.
@grossla8053
@grossla8053 Жыл бұрын
Why not keep the wall higher so the homers don’t need to be robbed and instead he could rob doubles without his failure being a run?

True. That wall was changed for CC. Once he left to Boston, he was a “traitor” lol. He is always a Ray. He was inducted in the Rays HOF. Rightly so. Trades happen, but his career was basically over after 2010.

As an Orioles fan, that Andino hit is still probably my favorite memory at a baseball game. At the time, the O’s never made the playoffs in my life. So stopping Boston was the greatest feeling as a fan who had yet to see his favorite team finish above .500 in his life.

This really was absolutely insane, but I still gotta give the greatest run ever to my 2011 Cardinals or the “Cardiac Cards.” Just the entire month leading up to the playoffs was insanity the run they went on, starting 10.5 games out of the wild card they had multiple miracle wins and other teams losing that helped them out all while on the brink of elimination the whole time. It all came down to game 162 where they won but needed the Braves to lose and somehow in the 13th inning the Phillies end up beating the Braves for the Cards to clinch that wild card spot. After beating the Phillies and Brewers, they had finally made it to the World Series against the Rangers. Despite a huge 3 HR game from Pujols in Game 3, the Cards find themselves down 3-2 in the series coming into Game 6 facing elimination once again. The Cards are down 7-5 in the bottom of the 9th and David Freese is up to bat with 2 outs and 2 strikes when he hits a 2 run triple off the wall to tie the game! In the top of the 10th Josh Hamilton hits a HR to put the Rangers back up 9-7, but the Cards rally in the bottom half of the inning to tie it back up. After holding the Rangers scoreless in the top of the 11th, in the bottom half of the 11th up comes David Freese and I’m pretty sure we all know what happened next with him hitting a HR to deep center to walk it off for the Cards and submitting himself in Cardinals history forever after they go on to win Game 7!

I got to go to both games 161 and 162 in Baltimore. Growing up a fan of the 90s Braves and the 00s DBacks, my buddy I was with got me to be a Sox fan due to mutual hatred of the Yankees. I'll never forget that day. The rain delay, watching Atlanta blow a 9 game lead in the final month but feeling hopeful with Boston and NY having leads. Only to get back to our wet seats to see that NY lead fading. Watching Boston blow the game and what do we see on the big screen leaving the park? Longoria's home run. I'll never forget walking back to our parking garage only to hear someone driving by telling me to burn the Papelbon shirt my buddy bought me that I was wearing.

The 'controversial' call to pinch hit Dan Johnson wasn't all that controversial. Some players are just known for coming up clutch in the big moments, and Johnson was no stranger to this. While he never had consistent playing time or great numbers on the team Johnson was known for coming up big late in games, and that started in the magical 2008 season when Johnson on the day he was called up from AAA (and was delayed in getting to Boston), he hit a huge go-ahead home run against Pappelbon and the Red Sox to ensure the Rays maintained the lead in the AL East division race. When I watched "game 162" as it is affectionately known to Rays fans, I was surprised to see Dan, but knew we needed a little more magic from him, and that's why he was put in that position. Absolute legend.
