I was in Tampa visiting family at that time. I’m a Yankees fan but I just knew that this was a huge game so I made the effort to go. The Yankees already clinched the 1 seed so I was actually rooting hard against them because I wanted to see the Red Sox eliminated. Going to the game ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Despite all the Yankees games I’ve seen in person, my favorite one was this game where they lost.

The only piece that is missing from this is more of the backstory about Dan Johnson, and why this game cemented his legacy in Tampa Bay Rays lore. Sure, to most Rays fans this is the moment that comes to mind when we mention Johnson, but there is a reason Dewayne Staats says he “does it again.” In the magical 2008 season where the Rays pulled off one of the most improbable but memorable Cinderella stories in MLB history, without a doubt the team’s biggest rival was the Red Sox. As evident by the back and forth all season and in the ALCS. But on September 9th, the Red Sox were just a half game behind the Rays with a chance to pass them in the standings. Going into the top of the 9th, the game seemed locked up as the Red Sox led 4-3 and had their All-Star closer Papelbon take the mound. Johnson, who had just been called up from AAA and showed up late to the ballpark, was called to face Papelbon in just his second major league at bat of the season with little expectations outside of just getting on base. But he did have power, and he showed it when he sent a 3-2 fastball out over the right field bullpens at Fenway Park. Tie game; and the Rays would go on to win that game 5-4. That moment was the “Dan Johnson game” prior to game 162. Dan had seemingly a flair for the dramatic when he played the Red Sox, also hitting a walkoff homerun in the 10th inning in a game on August 28th 2010 which helped the Rays keep pace with their co-division leading rival Yankees. While some fans thought at the beginning of the 2011 season Dan could take over 1st base or DH duties with the departure of All-Star Carlos Pena. But as things unfolded, he was unable to produce as an everyday player for the Rays and local products Casey Kotchman and Johnny Damon took over and played nearly everyday. But Johnson once again showed the Rays why he was worth stashing, and indirectly had one more opportunity to haunt Red Sox fans. Color commentator Brian Anderson pointed out that Dan was there to do one thing, and one thing only, “hit the ball out of the ballpark.” Just as a side note, I love this video, and I love coming back to it as it is one of if not the most legendary moments in Tampa Bay Rays history (as well as MLB history). I look forward to a rewind of the “Brett Phillips game” if that ever happens. But even if it doesn't, I'm very thankful Secret Base took on game 162 and gave it a rewind. Thank you!

I've lived in Tampa my whole life and followed our teams casually, but 2011 was my first year as a full-fledged watch-every-game baseball and Rays fan. Here's a suggestion for a rewind video, but it's about cricket. Even still, it would be perfect for a rewind video. So here goes: In cricket, the way scoring works is one team bats and puts up a score, while the second team tries to chase it down afterwards. If both teams score the same amount, then they play a super over, which is like overtime. Each team plays 6 deliveries and whoever scores more wins. Now a tie in cricket is very unusual and there are usually maybe 5 super overs played in a year. Then the rule for if a super over is tied used to be that the team that scored more boundaries (big hits) would win. What this did was give a team going into a super over an inherent advantage. It had happened one time between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, a domestic league, but was never changed as people thought it would never happen in a big game. In 2019, the world cup final was between England and New Zealand. England had never won a world cup before, despite being the creator of the sport. New Zealand were in their second consecutive world cup final after being the runner-ups in 2015 to rivals Australia. New Zealand batted first, and England did not look like they were in a good position. Then their player Ben Stokes played really well to tie the game, sending it to a super over. England batted first in the super over, and New Zealand had to chase. Needing 2 to win off the last ball of the super over, the New Zealand batsman scored 1 off the last ball and got out, just short of the second run. The super over was tied, but England won as they had scored more boundaries. This allowed England to win their first world cup, and meaning New Zealand lost their second consecutive world cup. Many people were unhappy about the result and the tied super over rule was changed very quickly to just continue super overs until someone won. This came into play this year during the IPL, as a super over between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab was tied, and went to a second super over.

I remember Francona left Boston shortly after this meltdown, penned an article saying the Sox's championship window was now firmly shut, and then with this crazy recapped night, along with others, like the Colorado/Arizona game in 2007, prompted Bud Selig to give us the Wild Card Game we know now. Great video. I love the rays and I remember going to bed early because I had football practice that night and was starting to get a cold but also because I thought it would be good luck. Before I passed out after a shot of NyQuil my dad told me Longoria just hit a 3 run shot. I said great but wasn’t about to leave my bed. The next morning my mom banged on the bathroom door with the news paper telling me about Longoria’s home run. I have never regretted missing this because I still want to believe me going to bed early helped them win.

What made this even more wild and enjoyable, was the fact that after Boston lost, you had Red Sox fans rooting for the Yankees to beat the Rays to keep their playoff hopes alive.
