People complain about the lack of 100+ pitch complete games, 5+ day starting rotations, increase in pitcher injuries, and also the change in offense to ‘3 true outcomes’… it all comes back to modern pitching being a peak athletic form.

This is the best batter/hitter matchup i've seen this year. It's just tactics versus raw ability and its beautiful. I knew he was gonna slot the arm higher for a back to back fastball down the middle as his strike out pitch. I'm intrigued by this, I wonder if it's hard on the arms of pitchers to fluctuate their arm slot a lot.

Sometimes it's not just arm angle, you can also sometimes read what a pitch might be just by how open/closed their glove looks when they're getting set. Strasburg was tipping pitches that way when they were on their World Series run a few years back.

I feel like it’d be very noticeable as a batter getting different arm angle releases. Because it’s not only changing where he releases the ball but the angle the ball is traveling. As a batter tracking the ball from release to the plate your going to notice 2 completely different angles. Not taking away from them being pros they’re great.

It's interesting that in today's pitching environment, teams really stress pitchers keeping a consistent arm slot. It's the complete opposite of the thought process from back in the day. As an example, in "The Science of Hitting," Ted Williams talks about how having multiple arm slots for every pitches effectively increases your pitch repertoire. He believed if a guy threw 3 pitches, but could throw each of them from 2 arm slots, the pitcher essentially had 6 pitches.
@jawbone78
@jawbone78 2 жыл бұрын
He's right, but that's also *why* teams stress keeping the consistent arm slot. Very few pitchers are capable of throwing more than three good pitches, so it comes down to whether or not you want your guys to focus really hard on being able to repeat the three good pitches they have really well, or throw more pitches less well. I think 100% of pitching coaches in the major and minor leagues would prefer to have their guys focus on quality over quantity in their repertoires, but there will always be some freaks for whom the normal rules don't apply.

So glad you did this one. Watching this during the game was awesome, everyone was completely dialed in on the battle and knew it was something slightly different than the usual pitcher-batter battle. Great stuff

This was great to see the breakdown and arm slot differences. You have to against Soto. He finally got Soto but don't believe it wasn't a challenge just as well for Urias. They both smiling tells you that was a battle and Soto recognized Urias as well. One thing is for sure, you better be on your stuff facing Soto and a few others.

Does this happen often with Soto enjoying a good pitcher batter duel? I would never have expected such gamesmanship and mutual respect from either a pitches or Soto. Clips I’ve seen, Soto is proven to be great enough a batter that he can shuffle about and glare at the pitcher.

@@jacobflowers0529 Why I was ask’n. I liked him because he can hit and is brave enough to act that macho. Now I like him more if he’s running about with respect for good pitching and not going to the dugout to say how lucky that pitcher got! Edit There IS always next time as I’m sure he knows!

top tier break down, this also goes to prove of how difficult the sport of baseball is, because this just only part of the battle between pitcher and batter, when many, many more variables could come into play during all this. Lit asf video and great break down! Love the dodgers and im a juan soto fan always, made the video even better. hope people could enjoy all sports and respect each sports craft

My 7 year old son and I were at the As game last weekend, and my son said "so and so sucks, right Dad?" I explained to him to play at this level, even the guy on the bench not playing has a skillset that most people can not even come close to getting. If you are the best player on your little league team, then your HS team, you might play college ball, and if you are still the best on your team, you might get called up to the show or play AAA, but to have longevity and staying power in the big league warrants respect. This breakdown showcases the level at which MLB is played. Well done.
