You see in 2024 you read it all on the net, anything said has an influence on thoughts on the music. Back when it was released it came out and just bought it...played it on headphones. You can't believe the work that he put in to make this album. Utter mind blowing album.

Totally AMAZING album from a genius. You have to get where Jon was when he made this, it's not like ANYTHING you have ever heard. Yes he wrote it, played it all, his ideas, with the totally fabulous cover design. Be in the moment ok , if you are not in the calm serene mindframe then you may not get it. My island album as it is so beautiful.

This is a wonderful album and a remarkable achievement by Anderson. I think you’re going to enjoy it. I would say you should probably listen to this in two sittings. Side A then side B. It all flows so well. Anyway glad your doing this. Enjoy.

I am so happy that you are doing _Olias._ It is a one off masterpiece. I say one off because the album is so different to everything else in his entire discography. And it is the most proggy. I can definitely hear the Vangelis influence on this first track, "Ocean Song". Thanks for the great reaction, my friend and I'm sorry that you were feeling under the weather when you recorded this. So that's worth an extra special thank you!

The first time I heard this album, I was not into it, I was like "this is some airy-faerie stuff, Jon". I think the second time I tried it, I wasn't into it either. Then I think with my third listen something CLICKED and I just FELL IN LOVE with this album. And I still love it! It is PURE Jon Anderson at his best. Incredible melodies, incredible beauty in the aesthetic of it all. FANTASTIC sounding synths that make you think Vangelis came up with the sounds (but he didn't). Yeah, the songs kind of all bleed into each other, so you need to listen to a whole side at once pretty much.

for Olias. John had already met Vangelis (he collaborated on his album Heven and Hell) and had asked him some questions about synthesizers to record his own album. If you look closely, he based the album on the ship-boat that appears in Roger Dean's cover of Fragile. And OIias is a play on words. Read backwards it is Sailo, like a Sailor.

Steve sings much more on his first solo album Beginnings, but he sings on only one song on his second album The Steve Howe Album (1979), and has a great singer on another song. The rest of the album is purely instrumental. The playing is terrific, and the styles very varied: rock country, ragtime, classical guitar, parts of a Vivaldi Piece played on electric guitar, accompanied by an orchestra. It is an excellent album, but probably more interesting for guitar lovers or musicians. His live album « Not Necessarily Acoustic » is from a solo tour he did, and it is really good. He plays solo versions of his songs, as well as Yes songs.

This is in mostly everybody's opinion Anderson's best solo album, and for sure one of the best of any of Yes alumni's solo albums... You have to realize, in 1976, when it came out, there was nothing to compare it to... new age did not exist yet, this was something totally new... I personally loved it then and still almost 50 years later this is one of my desert island albums... I think it plays better if you listen to each of the "sides" of the LP like one long suite...

Hi Justin. Yes, the songs do run into one another throughout , so it may seem a little tricky doing them one-by-one, but it does help to review each section, too. Some sections are just instrumental ("Song of Search" is hauntingly beautiful, with a heartbeat-like tempo in the background, later on the record). And of course, other sections have vocals to them. Don't expect any hard-rocking songs on this. "Solid Space" is about as "heavy" of as it gets, and it's a great tune! I would say " Flight of the Moorglade" and "To the Runner" were probably the most radio-friendly tunes at the time of release. It is a unique, strangely wonderful record to listen to. And Mesmerizing at times also!

Man this is gonna be interesting. Because of the very distict album cover I knew I had seen it before and sure enough I went through the rather large Yes section of my album collection. Sure enough I have it but don't think I ever listened to it. I have I think a couple Jon and Vangelis albums I did listen to some back in the day. We'll see what I missed 45 years ago lol. I really do appreciate your curiosity Justin and when you get to the 77'- 80ish time period it will just make it that much sweeter. Cheers

Sounds like a 70s Animal Collective. Jon is such a hippie, but I like how ambient/soundscapey it is - it's definitely not a "track by track" sorta album. Like a bit of Brian Eno - pop on it in the background, with a joint or something

I wish my original comment about this album got to you before you actually listened to it. I had mentioned that this album is all about atmospheres and textures - kind of an electronic ambient album. I thought that it was a natural progression from Relayer and it became my favourite of all the solos. It was something I'd put on late at night, closed my eyes and just enjoyed being swept away. I'm embarrassed to say that I never made the connection that the Moorglade, and the story, was inspired by the Fragile cover -- or at least I don't remember that I ever did. Yes, Anderson was/is a bonafide hippy.. So far so good on your reaction....
@yes_head
@yes_head Ай бұрын
Wow, this is a surprise. Justin, I assumed the moment you looked into the concept behind this album you'd go "No f*cking way!" 😄 And yeah, tackling this as a YT reaction video is tricky because of the cross-fades and segues. The CD track listing works for the most part, except that "Ocean Song" should really be heard as part of "Meeting"/"Sound Out the Galleon". Plus "Dance of Ranyart" and "Olias" are discreet tracks that for some reason are joined together on the CD version. I'll be curious as you go through this to see at any point you make the connection back to "We Have Heaven" from 'Fragile'. And I think I mentioned this elsewhere that, while Vangelis' influence is strong on this album, it's hotly debated whether or not he actually played on it. Some doubt Jon had the instrumental skill to come up with parts of it, whereas others (me included) feel that he had the time to just keep going at it until he got what he wanted. I mean, this album was delayed so long it threatened Yes' 1976 tour schedule, because there was Jon -- tearing his hair out in his home studio working on the final takes and the mix well past the Christmas '75 due date. BTW, he's threatened for many years to produce a follow-up to 'Olias', provisionally titled 'The Songs of Zamran: Son of Olias'.

One of those albums that grows in stature the more you listen as Tales from Topographic Oceans. Amazing for one person to create this on his own. I believe some people thought that Vangelis was involved with this work (and I understand why brcause it sounds like him) but that was not the case. I think it was Vangelis's recording company that were a bit upset at first, so I have heard. Makes a good back storey one way or another. The tracks do run into each other so (imo) the only way to listen and evaluate this album is to listen to a complete side at a time.

While I appreciate the individual talent of all of the members of Yes, the true magic was the combination of their talents. The same is true for most other successful bands. Jimmy Page talked about the magic when Zeppelin played together. That's why they never replaced Bonham. Black Sabbath was the same. They each added an element that combined to be bigger than the sum of their individual parts. I'm in my 70's now. I bought lots if "solo albums ". With all due respect, none of them were as good without the other band members. Just my opinion. Thanks for the channel. It's always interesting to hear your perspective.

I know you generally do one at a time, but since this was a short instrumental intro it probably should have been paired with Meeting. It is like one song. I hate when albums track intros and the main song as separate tracks. That would be like doing Foreplay by Boston one day and Long Time the next day. But Boston had the sense to track them as one song. Oh well, I look forward to tomorrow so we can finally hear him sing.

This is one of tbe most beautiful albums I have ever heard. It has real healing power, and transports the listener. It has elements of New Age, ambient and the eclectic sounds of east Asia with hypnotic Buddhist chanting. This is NOT like a YES album, it does not showcase virtuoso instrumentalists and it is very far from rock n roll. This album is for dimming the lights, lighting the incense and meditating until the sun comes up. The synopsis is strange to me because I have always interpreted the journey of the ship and Olias, it's captain, as allegorical to the journey of tbe soul across tbe cosmos, seeking the divine within. A profoundly spiritual message, not just a quaint fantasy story. The finsl words before the closing track indeed describe tbe journey as ascending the stars, or to 'enter your heart , To your love To your love "Peace will come Peace will reign Over all our days See your love See your love See your love" After this we hear a beautiful soothing orchestral section supported by a gentle heart beat... totally sublime..

BOLD MOVE & prematurely JUDGEMENTAL, 😮 😊 but for a 19 year old kid in a spiritual mindset on LSD in 75, this was and still is another masterpiece. The World Music & Ambient influences at the time were no less unique & groundbreaking which created a one of a kind gem. Remember all pieces here are interconnected narratively and thematically and evolves like a fantasy dreamlike story. Sorry you have to listen to it in pieces. That's really not the way😢 They are more experiences through one long adventure rather than separate journeys. BTW having owned my original scratched up LP, this was my first CD Disc introduction in the early 90s .😅 It was a tearfilled phenomenal journey.

Jon Andersons lyrics in any musical setting can only be ignored by the ignorant, hence the word ignorance. There are many of us who understand a substantial amount of his lyrics. Olias is a bit easier than the abstract style of Yes lyrics up to that time. This album is the start of Jon coming down to Earth slowly from his mystical heights lyrically.

Howe is not a great singer, but neither is Dylan. Steve's instrumentation and arrangements make it one of the better solo efforts.
