Everyone's going off on Jon like the question was "do YOU give him a pass?" (which he said it would be wrong to give him a pass). The question was did HOLLYWOOD give Polanski a pass. When Jon refers to it being a "different time", he's not implying that because it was a different time, he should get a pass. He's referring to Hollywood (which is the whole point of the fucking question) as a whole, giving him a pass when the incident occurred because not many people spoke out against influential people during that time. So people (Hollywood)(as in, ya know, not Jon) might have given him a pass for that reason. Unlike today's predators being exposed, it was a DIFFERENT TIME. Also, nowhere does he say that Polanski's personal tragedies make it okay to do what he did. But his tragedies may have made Hollywood (again, not Jon) take it easier on him as opposed to others. He could have been a bit more emphatic about not giving him a pass, but he clearly says he doesn't. Fuck, people, listen before criticizing the dude.

Lee Ermy a license to say whatever the fuck he wanted. He wasn't known for his collaboration such much as his absurdly brutal methods, though. Doing so many takes that it literally drove people to tears, emotionally abusing Shelly Duvall to induce genuine hysteria on camera, wilfully nearly blinding Malcolm McDowel for a pick-up shot, foot-down DEMANDING an accurately coloured table in a black and white film.
