The Evelyn/Lydia meeting has a moment of pure comedic timing. After they leave, Berta points out, "The only difference between those broads is you came out of one". The interuption of Charlie before she could say more, is comedy gold. They set the joke up and didn't even have to finish it for everyone to get it. The sceen finishes off perfectly. Mid way through the scene, Berta looks at Jake, while poking fun at Charlie, and says, "and they call you slow." The sceen ends with Jake asking, "Who calls me slow?" Great set up and punchline. There is just enough time between the two statements that the point is made, but not enough time that you forget the earlier statement. Excellent writing and acting.

Kutcher couldn't save the show for two reasons. 1 - Out of desperation it seems, the producers put too much emphasis on Cryer's role who became more and more unbearable, not funny. 2 - The fact that most casual viewers get used to something and hate change. Kutscher was supposed to fill the vacuum left by Sheen's departure, which he did in an admirable manner. He was NOT supposed to be a new Charlie!

Sheen was always a nutcase and it finally caught up with him. It was definitely the Charlie Harper Show and a cult favorite of millions. Like Berta, Cryer kept the show going because without Alan's neurotic behavior Charlie wouldn't have had his "it's my house" deal. For those of us who have and continue to watch the reruns it's amazing how we still laugh at Charlie, Alan and the cast.. Kucher was decent but what really killed the show was overdoing Charlies's gay daughter and making Kucher such a wimp. They could have done it without the in your face approach. They assumably felt they could woke the show or didn't care about losing viewers. Too bad. Two and a Half men started out as genius and then with Sheen's decline was just another bunch of actors getting paid. That's the real sad part.

I had been giving thought about which character's influence defined the entire show and I concluded it was the mother Evelyn Harper. Evelyn Harper was a narcissist, promiscuous, manipulative, used men to further her own wealth, demeaning of all around her, could not give a complement without immediately following with a demeaning comment, and controlling of all people and events. An emotionally distant mother expressing very little affection for her sons who she considered impediments for her life. This influenced the personalities of her two sons and set the dynamics that determined the story lines of all the shows. Charley Harper was a mirror of his mother who he despised. In his youth he began acting out his feelings including heavy alcohol drinking. His younger brother Alan became a stand in or his mother and tormented him in her place. He too was promiscuous as inadvertently taught to be by his mother. He did not seek wealth from his relationships with his women and for him women were a disposable sexual item, this bordered on antisocial personality disorder. He was in two long term relationships but if another woman was available he would use her for sex. He was like his mother a narcissist. His relationships with women had his mother's controlling influence and the tried to control every aspect between them. He did not exert effort into controlling his own everyday life and let events happen with little or no thought to the consequences. He had no control of his fiances and like everything else he would call “the guy” so he was avoiding dealing with things. He was an alcoholic which has two aspects. The obvious is he was physically addicted and to halt withdrawal he drank more and more. The less obvious is an addict uses their substance, in this case mostly alcohol but any drug would do, to suppress their feelings. While on the surface Charley liked his life and stated how happy he was with it he was very unhappy with himself. Alan Harper's response to his mother's influence was in some ways different than Charley's. References show that in his youth he tried to please his mother and she could never be pleased. This carried over to his relationships with women whom he had the compulsion to try to please them seeking their approval as with his mother. He also tended to seek involvement with women that mirrored his mother. His first wife Judith was controlling and fault finding like his mother. She emotionally and physically distanced herself from Alan and he was granted sex on his birthday. This behavior was carried over to her second husband Herb. She used her relationships with men to further herself financially. After divorcing Alan she never took a job and got all her money from Alan. She also, admitted in one episode, took Jake's child support money for herself. When dating his second wife Kandi she like Evelyn used her relationship with him as a source of money in the form of buying her things and paying her bills. Kandi immediately divorced him when he won a large sum from a slot machine on their honeymoon and took everything including his dog, she had gotten what she really wanted. Alan wanted to be promiscuous but his personality and social awkwardness made him unattractive to most women. Still if he was in a relationship and the opportunity have sex with another woman occurred he took advantage of it. Where his mother used her relationship with men to get money Alan tried to get money from everyone except for the women he had a sexual relationship with. Where Charley paid for prostitutes Alan gave his money mostly indirectly to the women he dated unknowingly mimicking Charley's behavior. Alan like his mother attempted to control everything and everyone around him though ineptly. This effort to assert control over others made relationships with women difficult. Alan expressed his dislike for his mother and avoided contact but continued with his compulsion to try and please her. Like Charley he was very unhappy with himself. While the story line focuses on Charley and Alan all scripts are rooted in the effect Evelyn had on her two sons. She was the defining influence to the series and it was centered around her. With the removal of Charley Harper that slot was filled with the character of Walden Schmidt changing some of the dynamics while the show was still rooted in Evelyn Harper. Just my thoughts.

Maybe instead of Kutcher, they should’ve gotten Emilio Esteves instead since he’s Charlie’s real life brother. All they had to do was say Charlie was in an auto accident and instead of bumping Harper off just say he survived the crash but needed plastic surgery……

If you don’t recall his real life brother (Emilio) was in an episode but died early in that episode drinking and smoking cigars on the back deck.
