So glad someone finally mentioned Vance's irritating use of her name: "Margaret" this and "Margaret" that. It's a technique from "How to Make Friends and Influence People" intended to attract someone's attention by using their name. In fact, it comes across as incredibly intrusive and condescending. "Well, Margaret...pay attention to me as I mansplain to you..."

My father-in-law’s wife, a retired ambitious realtor who was a big fan of that book, does this ALL the time, and it’s SO irritating. She always sounds condescending, and like she’s going to tell you how things really are. Fortunately we only have to tolerate it once a year for a few days because of how far away from us they live lol

The purpose of a presidential debate is to inform the public. Leaving a false impression with the public does not lead to good decisions by voters. It’s important in this type of debate for the moderators to at least clarify some of the most egregious misinformation.

I agree with Jon F. about podcasts. I've often thought, when listening to PSA, that it was like listening to friends having a conversation and finding it extremely funny and entertaining.

Lovett’s desire for the moderators not to fact-check and for the debaters to fact-check each other might have worked before Drumpf, (or in any debate where neither participant is an accolyte), but Drumpf’s strategy of “flooding the zone” with so many obvious lies leaves his opponent with two options - use their limited time fact-checking all his bull, (which makes them look on the back foot and let’s him control the narrative), or let all of his bull stand unchecked, and just get their stuff out instead. This is not the old times of “all politicians skirt around the truth here and there,” or “spin.” One side absolutely floods the airwaves with utter claptrap, and it needs to be constantly called out by every responsible person.
@DebraHughes-l1k
@DebraHughes-l1k Ай бұрын
I agree. They would just deteriorate into bickering. But I do also think the opponent can fact check on the spot as Tim did when he called Vance ducking the question on the 2020 election by calling it a damning non-answer.

The “flood the zone” strategy is also referred to as a Gish Gallop strategy- Trump was also doing the same thing in his “debate” with Harris. There is a way to combat it effectively without having to constantly debunk EVERY lie & that is essentially to point out at the beginning of the debate that this is the tactic the person is going to use, why it’s affective and then point out every time it’s used thereafter. You don’t need to go into detail, just say “X statement is factually incorrect” then pivot to Harris/Walz policies or how they’re different & better than from Trump/Vance. I get what you’re saying, but I do think it is important that Harris/Walz DO fact check. They need to make it clear that they do stand in stark contrast to Trump/Vance.

What annoyed me most about Vance (besides the non-stop lying) was him constantly asking why Harris hadn't done Presidential stuff over the last 3 & 1/2 years. It was pandering to an uneducated base who don't understand the actual limitations of Vice Presidential powers. Insulting to any voter with a modicum of understanding of civics.

Why can't Kamala debate JD? Donald is scared to do it again, and Donald is 78 yrs old and not a healthy man, JD is more likely to become President before the end of the term if Donald is elected than Tim is if Kamala is elected.......so why not a debate between JD and Kamala? She would win. And JD's misogyny would be obvious.

Regarding the debate. Vance won-if you disregard all the lies. Whereas Walz’s arguments were True (with a capital T!). Walz corrected him a couple of times, the moderators once (to which he whined “I thought you weren’t going to fact check”. Boohoo). But he got away with a lot more. I guess the Republicans agreed to debate only if they could lie to the American people.

When it came to the issue of post-birth abortion, I wish Walz had asked Vance, " How old are you, J.D.?" And when Vance answered "Forty," Walz had said, "Well, I think post-birth abortion should be illegal after the forty-first year."

I don't think it's fair to direct hate at the ladies. Samantha is not here as a comedian and Joanna is obviously more than a Project Runway host. I totally agree. When we start complaining about Trump’s small hands or his hair or whatever, we’re resorting to pettiness. There are so many substantive issues to criticize him about. Same for RFK. Things like his voice are the least offensive things about these men. And we shouldn’t spend time on the stupid things.
