The commentator mentions deferrals. While the dodgers did defer money, they still have to put it on the books at the present value. This means it counts against the luxury tax threshold. So while they won't pay ohtani most of his money until 10 years later they still have to count it for threshold purposes and they have to put the money in a separate Account starting this next year on an annual basis

I like Soto, but if the Yankees can sign him, it will handcuff them, they will have no money to fill in all the other holes. His contract will be 600M= and for too many years. For potentially less money they could get Santander for LF, Walker for 1B, Scott for Closer.....and trade for Brandon Donovan for 3B and move Chisholm to 2B.
