Mad, had the urge to listen to this. Again and just seen it’s 10 years.. this was inspirational. It’s a classic. There is so many flips that can spin from this At 4:50 you can flip into uptown funk for a red bull style routine And to think you said you didn’t think was good enough at the time!!!

djjon1st Can I ask you a seriously honest and notatallarudeassquestion(s) - And we know this has been DONE TO DEATH, but I want to hear (read) it from you. In regards to the Serato scratch live, or whichever system may be in use moreoften today, do you feel that actual vinyl handling talent and genuine beat juggling is a thing of the past? If you take away your laptop, do you feel you could easily transition your current skillset back to where the culture of turntabilism started? (on Vinyl) How do you feel about DMC as it is today? Would you prefer to gather your set on vinyl, lay your cues and go hard?Or spend easily more than 20 hours chopping samples and beats from digital media and performing 40% or the same workload vs vinyl while playing live? A lot of DJ's today get all kind of shit thrown at them owing to the perception of "most of the work is done "electromagically", before the scenes, fastidiously preprepared, "might as well just press play and walk away - there's your routine" kinda thing - and I for one would love nothing more than to read these stupid-ass comments and know that none of the shit is true!
@Jon1st
@Jon1st 9 жыл бұрын
Beatmania.co.nz Yes this has been done to death... -Yes, traditional vinyl skips more than DVS (yes, DVS can skip too, even in 'relative' mode, and is arguably harder to recover from as your sticker markers no longer relate to the audio), but the actual patterns, be they scratching or beat juggling are exactly the same to perform. In this set and countless other winning routines of recent years (Chris Karns, Switch, I-dee, Vekked, Unkut are just a few), DJs are winning DMC titles with traditional, non edited-chase based juggle routines. -Yes, of course. I have battled in both vinyl and DVS based battles. However, there are techniques that DVS allow that are not possible with normal vinyl, such as loop and cue point based techniques. This is why, in my opinion, DVS is an obvious evolution from vinyl and why it should be embraced in turntablist battles as it provides more options and creative avenues for DJs, allowing for new tricks and techniques to be created and therefore make battles more interesting. It's up to the DJs to use DVS in that way rather than just using it as a vinyl substitute of course. -I would 100% prefer to use DVS in a battle. I can use any song I want and have more creative options (see my last paragraph), which makes the competition more interesting - new possibilities = new tricks = fresher routines, provided the DJs are putting in the work to push themselves to push the limits of turntablism. Your percentage is completely off. The only difference between vinyl and DVS sets (other than loops and cues of course) is the way you perform transitions, taking the needle off one record and putting on another record - something that takes very little skill if you've been doing this a few months. Yes, finding the right time to transition is different but you still have to perform the transitions between songs, even if you don't have to physically remove the needle and change the record. I'm still changing tracks in this routine, for example, by using the mixer's track selector pot. Yes, some people abuse the shortcuts that DVS allows you to do (but you could do this on vinyl with dubplates too) - but that's what seperates a DJ taking shortcuts from someone who has put in the work. There's always been wack DJs and good DJs, regardless of the performance medium. I think DMC is at a great point now as a competition allowing DVS as it's opening itself up to new ideas and new forms of creativity but it's up to the DJs entering to push the skill level of the battle to the next level and not let it stagnate. This has always been the case, even in the vinyl era. -Because you can edit your record files beforehand, SOME DJs take shortcuts (e.g. edited chases/sounds that sound more complicated than they actually are), but they're rarely the guys winning. The guys winning these events are pushing the limits and performing far and beyond what is possible with vinyl. Check out DVS sets by precision, idee, izoh etc. A lot of modern DMC DJs use music that older fans dislike, but more often then not, they're just playing music they like. I for one have seen enough poor Rock The Bells backspinning routines to last me a lifetime, I want to see and hear progression and I think there has been plenty. -Something people also need to understand as fans, who don't necessarily battle themselves, in order to impress you, battle DJs need to not only reach the level of top battle DJs but also surpass them. This takes YEARS of dedication and if people complain about the skill level of current battlers, you have to remember that a lot of them weren't even scratching when people like Craze, Kentaro, Merge etc etc were winning world titles. I didn't start until 2004, for example, I had to work to get to the level I'm at now, and entered DMCs for a few years before winning the 2013 Online title. Hope this answers your questions.

djjon1st This answers all my questions and more, quite comprehensively, so thank you :) in 2008, I bought 2 Techtronic directdrive turntables an an awesome classic mixer, a numark DM2002x - I thought I could learn, get creative and have fun. But i'll admit for every day of my life, it's a metric fuck-tonne harder than anyone ever gives it credit for :) (ps, I consequently gave up :()

djjon1st Your set was dope and you have skills.The politics of vinyl will surround deejaying forever. Bottom line truth is until turntablism embraces other forms of music(which in certain cases has) It will be considered dead just like the genre of music that started it Hip Hop. Battling now is a joke the skill sets haven't changed.With the controlers avalible there is little use for vinyl except asethetics.If you love what you do then keep doing it.

I started djing in 1996 I came up in the vinyl days. I dont get the negativity, and Im sick of the same excuses. Vinyl is great (always will be) but if your not willing to practice and learn to aporeciate the advantages of the new technology then maybe its time for a new hobby, cause DJing isn't your passion. You stopped progressing the minute you let this new and unknown territory intimidate you into standing still. I would have robbed a bank to have these toys 20 years ago, and to be able to remix tracks live on the fly. You want to keep lugging your 100 lbs of wax around? I respect that but Id rather lug around a thumb drive. Jon1st that was some serious ninja shit man. Someone showed me this a few years ago and Im so glad I stumbled on it again. Its Inspiring when you think you've seen it all and someone reminds you, you can still go way further. Thanks for the push kid. Keep killing it!!

KickinMcLoven It all depends on your price range, what you want to do, Etc. I suggest if you want the turntable feel, you could get a Numark NS7 for a decent price, due to the NS7II that came out. Just mixing you could get just about anything, search around, I love the NS7, pioneer DDj-SX (or SB), or find a nice pair or decks and a mixer (with or without Rane software) and practice.

I can't believe anyone would actually hate on this set man; seriously! Thank you Jon1st for taking time out to record and post it. As with some who have commented before me, I've been a deejay for a hot minute (20+ yrs actually, give or take) and I think this set is top shelf, no doubt about it! Your technique (scratch speed and phrasing), sample selection, beats (both scratched and dropped).... all INSANE!!! Thanks again for sharing with the rest of us.
