Probably the most ubiquitous and well-liked Christmas song in the UK and Ireland. I can listen to it a thousand times and not get bored of it, it just embodies Christmas for me and many others. It reminds me of my childhood, always hearing it around Christmas time. Any time I hear it, even now, it makes me think of driving around with my family and looking at all the lights and hearing it come on the radio. A simpler time. A happier time. R.I.P. to both Shane and Kirsty, both tragically taken too young.

We had a wave of Irish music in Sweden when The Pogues first started a weird mix of punks and old folksong leftists who went to concerts. I can't hear this one without going back to that time. Not pubs, but trashed out living rooms. Toy Dolls, Ramones, random Swedish stuff and then suddenly this one causing a mix of melancholy, joy, screaming the lyrics and giving hugs.

You should youtube "Shane McGowen's funeral fairytale of New York". They had a band playing this in the church, and his family and friends were literally dancing and singing in the aisles. The entire country of Ireland celebrated his life and music that day. The streets and pubs were packed, everyone had a drink in their hands and sang Pogues songs until the wee hours. ❤

A song that almost didn’t happen, the record company wanted to release it in time for Christmas which meant it had to be finished by a certain date, but Shane and the band had listened to a dozen or more female session singers, and had rejected them all. With very little time left they were on the brink of abandoning the whole thing when the producer persuaded them to hold off over the weekend. The producer was Kirsty’s then boyfriend and he recorded her in their garage studio. Played it to Shane on the following Monday, and the rest is history. Kirsty was a painfully insecure artist in her own right, but you really should check out her solo stuff, in particular her biggest hit, There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis, which sounds like it should be a novelty record, but actually has very meaningful lyrics which I’m sure Amber would appreciate.

Adding another vote to react to Kirsty MacColl, one of the finest singer songwriters of her time. She's been gone 23 years now, and was on the verge of breaking through after years of ups and downs as a singer. She was so well known and utilized in the British music industry, be it her songs or her vocals backing other artists. She hadn't become well known in America, yet was about to tour a brilliant new album that I think would have really caught on here. Then she was gone, by the tragic negligence of another party. She wrote some of the most clever, sometimes funny yet extremely poignant lyrics you will ever here. Definitely worth giving her work a try.

The brilliance f this song is illustrated by the line "The boys in the NYPD Choir are singing Galway Bay" which is a story in itself. It alludes to the fact that a lot of the Irish diaspora went to America seeking a better life, and ended up becoming policemen. We saw The Pogues in The Top Rank in Swansea in 1988. This song was the encore, abd there was a big cheer when Kirsty MacColl was brought on to sing with The Pogues. As they left the stage they congratulated us on winning the Triple Crown in the then Five Nations. Great gig.

One of my favorite lines: "I could have been someone, well so could anyone..." It captures the whole despair and disgust they both feel. Shane's trying to blame her and their relationship out of spite and hatred and Kristy's response is basically, "Yeah, anyone could be something, you just don't have what it takes, quit blaming me you loser." The juxtaposition of how it started and where it ended all in 3+ minutes. Perfection.

I expected you to do it on xmas or shortly before when Shane died. You should do their version of Dirty Old Town and especially Rainy Night in Soho! They were highly influencial in the 80s to bring Irish Folk (actually Punk Folk) to a new (mine :)) generation - together with the Waterboys in the second phase (you only did a song from their first phase, please to Bang on the Ear or Fisherman's Blues, you would love it).

This is my favorite Christmas song. My second favorite is "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" by Tom Waits. Kirsty MacColl wasn't actually a member of The Pogues. She's performing a guest duet with MacGowan on this song. For more from the Pogues, you might like "Summer In Siam", "Lorca's Novena", or "The Body Of An American". For more from Kirsty MacColl, try "They Don't Know" and her covers of "Days" (from The Kinks) and "A New England" (from Billy Bragg.)

In These Shoes, A New England, Walking Down Maddison, Don’t Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim & her cover of The Kinks song, Days to get you started. She was the daughter of Ewan MacColl, a folk singer famous for his song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

This song was performed live at the church where Shane MacGowen's service was held, and one of the most touching things was seeing people climb over the pews to dance together in the aisles in front of his coffin. Say what you will, but we Irish know how to mourn.

It's nice to see you guys reacting to this classic Irish folk ballad, speaking as one of the descendants of Éire.🍀 It would be great if you guys could react to some Irish movies too.🎬 You just might be pleasantly surprised. There are some great Irish (or Irish related) movies, some of which have become classics. For instance: The Boondock Saints, Michael Collins, The Wind That Shakes The Barley and *Intermission (*the Irish Pulp Fiction). In the opening scene in this video, you can see actor Matt Dillon (also of Irish descent) playing the cop who drags lead singer Shane MacGowan to the "drunk tank". Don't forget to react to some more Irish artists: Dexy's Midnight Runners, Gilbert O'Sullivan, U2, Van Morrison, etc.. Keep representing us Celts.🍀😉 Thanks for sharing.👍 Peace & Love🕊❤
