Hello John love the videos, me and my M8s fish the Thames in Oxfordshire a lot. we use sweetcorn on the waggler in summer to get around the bleak instead of tares ( just feed a few grains in with the hemp) might be worth a try goid luck👍

Hi Jon just got home! Only way I could get passed the bleak was pellet and sweetcorn. Caught on both. Tares weren’t working bleak had them! 😢 I’m not even going to buy casters or maggots yet.. Had about 5lb of fish in 4 hours. With probably an hour trying to work it out. I ended using a 3.5 gram waggler went heavy to avoid the bleak and I think in my match coming up I’m going to use a bolo, 5-6 grams I’ve got in my box. Olivette and all the weight at the bottom. I suppose I could feeder fish it but you don’t explore the swim half as much! With todays condition I’m quite happy the weather was rough! I’ve never fished a match but I’ve watch your videos thank you. I think I’m going to ball out groundbait with 2/3mm pellets and hemp. Then just feed hemp.

Hi Jon, I'm in New Zealand. Can you tell me what a (tear) is that you fish with. It looks like some sort of berry, but I'm not sure.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur Жыл бұрын
Tares are a particle bait that are readily available in all good uk tackle shops (often both dry or cooked) and are a seed or pulse. Also used as horse and bird feed so they are also available from some grain and animal feed merchants. Honestly don’t know what plant they derive from though. Bigger than hemp and, once prepared, easier to hook, so make a good compliment to hempseed. Prepped very similar to hemp by soaking and boiling.

Jon Arthur I think your an amazing all round angler, but something, that has always wondered me for the past 20-30 years is….. Why is hemp, worm and caster so successful on lakes and rivers, esp as loosefeed yet, if I’ve ever put a tare on the hook in a natural lake, it’s always been kiss of death, yet in a river, if you can get them going, it can be so successful What’s the difference? Top angling!!!
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 5 ай бұрын
I remember Pete Rice winning a match with 99lb of F1s on tares at Tunnel Barn many many years ago and Im sure you'd catch on a Stillwater with them. Im sure I have, but thats a long time ago too. I think tares on a river work for several reasons, including being so easy to hook, the slightly bigger stand-out size, the extra weight helps stop them flapping as much as hemp, the weight might also help you hook the fish easier, they are easier to pin to the bottom in a fast flow, the flow also means a fish has less time to inspect the hook bait. But as far as it being the kiss of death on a Stillwater I think you'd be surprised if you gave them another go. It's something on my long list of things to try. All the best.

I bulk my weights up when tear fishing because roach will take your weights thinking they are tears
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 2 ай бұрын
Hmm, I know this is a popular belief but I have rarely experienced it myself, plus a bulk or block of shot will actually be closer to the size of a tare than stringing them out. eg. Even a grain of hemp is tonnes bigger than a No8 shot. The way to tell if they're shot bites or not is to cast out without a tare on. I tend to think you're just missing genuine bites most of the time. Mostly from fish too small to take the hook and hook bait in confidently.
