"I don't think he judges very well."
Vladimir Putin might be a clever manipulator, but he's a poor judge of character, says Jonathan Dimbleby.

27 million people were not Russian casualties, they were total of Soviet Union. Ukrainians, Belarusians, Georgians, Kazakhs etc. Ukraine alone lost 8 million people. Belarus lost 25% of its population.

@joebish6629 19 күн бұрын
So, lets say 'only' 15 million were Russian. That would fill Wembley stadium 190 times. Still an extremely high number and it's within living memory. Can you imagine the effect that had on people? And guess where the invaders came through? Ukraine. Any surprise the Russians are very, very sensitive about Ukraine? The neo-cons in Washington knew exactly what Russia would do if they continued with the plan for Ukraine to join NATO, so I guess they wanted this war.

This Russian narrative is so completely pervasive that even a scholar misspeaks. Many more Ukrainians died in the war - not to mention throughout Soviet occupation - than Russians. Russian has also completely co-opted the most famous Ukrainian scientists, authors, etc. as their own and the world just accepts it.

exactly, dimbleby is completely wrong in his analysis because the West is way more powerful now than the soviet union was in WW2. Also Europe was completely destroyed so there was nobody left except the US, UK and Soviet Union therefore relatively speaking the Soviet Union had alot of power. However now you have the combined miltaries of Europe along with the US which are many times more powerful than Russia especially now that Putin has expended so much of the Russian army in Ukraine. Therefore the tables are completely turned the West just needs to show Putin its muscle once and for all

It is clear the west lost the war strategically in 2023 after the failed counter offensive. So only consolation you have is to propagate falsehoods about Russia losing half a million soldiers in Ukraine. At the end of the your, the defeat of the west will be undeniable. Two teenager guys tried to mug me by showing me they had a gun (which was in a jacket inside pocket which they flashed ) . I had about £15 at the time But it was a public place with plenty of witnesses. I very rapidly - instantaneously concluded they had poor strategic judgement. And were thus unpredictable. I concluded that there was no time to give them my wallet, though they were 'welcome' to it . I knew there were enough hard obstacles to get me out of their firing line in less time than it took first them to de- pocket the gun . I was a competitive athlete so I knew that by then time it could be deployed - IF they were super decisive , I would be 100 feet away at least in a space instructed by hard objects and then within a second or two around a corner. Then I would be rapidly round corners and opening the distance way beyond any accurate shooting. Perhaps I was wrong I'm no expert. I say this as if I planned it . I was only conscious of the plan after I left the area. It came together in about 0.75 of a second. I remember their surprise as I quit the area. I think they may have thought the deal was You show the universe a gun and the universe yields to your will . Wheras in reality you show the universe a gun and the universe gets very scared and unpredictable, and you may not have a say in what happens next.

1943/44 the bombing of Germany had removed Germany as an industrial nation along with transportation, communications, research, development, etc. WWII cannot be judged by looking at the fronts and what happened to soldiers. The „glory“ of the Soviet Union winning WWII is a myth. The Soviet Union could just as easily taken JAPAN! After the U.S. destroyed Japans industry and Navy.

People try to reduce ww2 to simple binaries. I see it as a coming together of many different forces. There were times where they whole thing balanced on a couple of guys /gals getting something right. But that comes together with the big things - like the soviets (and others) and the iron determination of Stalin not to give to beans about them - and you get a victory.

Madam, Dimbleby was forming an interesting point about Putin being clever yet strategically incompetent, when you cut him off to challenge his assertion that Putin is clever. Do you really think that a dullard could rule Russia? Does the notion of a brutal man being clever offend you? I daresay it does. And that is itself a not very clever thing.

Nothing in warfare "has" to be. If the Ukrainians (and their backers) have sufficient resolve, they can get the Russians out of their country. If not, they won't. But this guy is just as much an armchair general or president as the rest of us.
@rogerhardy6306
@rogerhardy6306 24 күн бұрын
Resolve isn't enough. They need more more weapons (just as UK did in 1940-41) and they can't make enough themselves; therefore they are dependent on help from Europe and the US. In addition, no one wins a war without air superiority and neither side has that. As soon as one side has air superiority, they can win the ground war. Let's hope it's Ukraine because if Russia wins it will be a massive problem for Europe.

I agree with most of what Dimbleby is saying here wrt. WWII but you can't join the dots in a straight line to the current situation. He's making the mistake of conflating the Soviet Union with the current situation in the Russian Federation. Territorial boundaries with people who are fighting for their liberty and way of life. A generation that grew up after the Soviet Union and don't want to go back. Russian elites in Moscow may very well feel the way that he states about history and have a passionate sense of nationalist patriotism but the majority of soldiers in the front are doing it for a pay check as it's their most lucrative option. Virtual mercenaries, an exploitation of the poor. Reluctant cannon fodder. There is great dissatisfaction in the regions. No other way of finding employment. Mass exodus of the most qualified and financially able people. A real chance that the federation could collapse if it continues. Internal sabotage of railways, factories and recruitment offices etc. going on. Most are aware that they are not fighting an existential threat as with the Nazis. Furthermore a large part of that pool of human resource being referred to were Ukrainians in WWII and we were supplying the Soviets with military aid, not the other way around. The Russian Federation is by comparison a house of cards begging China, Iran and North Korea for help.

NATO hasn't been particularly "resilient" Jonathan it's been unexpectedly "belligerent". This has actually demonstrated how unresilient NATO is to an industrial war of attrition. NATO is losing this proxy war because it can't keep up with Russian arms production and hasn't the will to take the level of casualties that Ukraine has suffered.

How do you think he got from a junior figure in St Petersburg to leader of Russia for over two decades by having bad judgement. Objective evaluation does he usually get what he wants answer yes. He is a wily and intelligent guy not a fool with bad judgement. The Russian military did a rushed invasion with too few resources in the wrong place. Lets be honest Kyiv surrounded and Polish border closed from Belarus, basically game over. Invasion in the east and every day no trade, no supplies for Ukraine. Is his economy growing strongly? yes, is he winning in Ukraine, yes slowly. So far has.not been ideal.but suffers from bad judgement is more like Zelenskyy. Cut defence spending prior to invasion, denied it up until the day before, had no defenses in Kharkiv border area. That is bad judgement. Churchill we be examining the border personally two years into a war and making tanks Ukrainian or western designs. Not producing zero. Putin makes mistakes but Zelenskyy is good at PR but less so at military leadership.

@dpelpal same reasons Ukranians do to avoid a war and call ups. As for Ukraine being poor well that's firstly currency fashionability. Secondly 189 billion dollar GDP gets boosted like recent 61 billion dollars from the US. Zelenskyy going over the top 27 Patriot battery request cost another 30 billion dollars for that alone let alone training spares, replacement missiles. Ukraine is supported by the west that is how it manages. It needs to produce some kind of tank locally with Western help and mobilise properly to finish the war. Whole thing is a long destructive process and a tragedy.
