He was so incredibly handsome and elegant. The best vampire ever to grace the airwaves, film or theater! He was perfectly cast. Rest in peace, Johnathan Frid. You were a brilliant actor and brought Barnabas Collins to life. Thank you for that.

@@lindalcoomes Dark Shadows writer Joseph Caldwell in his book stated that the producer / director Dan Curtis was a bit Homophobic and said Dan Curtis did not know about Frid when he was hired. He said that had Dan known in advance that he would he picked theater actor Bert Convy for the role instead of Frid for the temporary role of the vampire in early 1967 .

That's so true about suggestibility, at the end of the first episode of The Night Gallery premiere trilogy "The Cemetery", you hear the last moments of life for the butler. You are left with your imagination what unthinkable horrors were inflicted upon him.

This is from New Jersey Network. I was there manning the phones. When we made eye contact he called out to me and said, "I saw Hamilton!" We had one thing in common. Jonathan was referring to seeing an exit sign on 195 West for Hamilton Square on his way to Ewing, NJ. He was from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and I was from Hamilton Square, NJ. He always said that we should create our own subset of the Dark Shadows Festival for people from "Hamilton!" Damn I miss him!

Also both Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper said they were thrilled to have met Frid. Depp felt like an excited little kid , fanboy, meeting him. Frid told Depp and Burton that he hoped they were not going to make a gory violent vampire movie like Curtis' House of Dark Shadows was. Frid told Depp and Burton how much he hated House of Dark Shadows and what Curtis did to his character. He told Depp that if they were going to make that kind of movie then he would not want to appear in it. Frid said he had no idea who Alice Cooper was when he met him. Alice was all in make up but he just smiled and acknowledged Alice as just another fan . :) :) I love the story.

Thanks, yes I had read and heard that DS actress Kathryn L Scott was good friends ever since they worked together on the TV show he was on '21 Jump Street'. They'd stayed friends ever since and he used to call Ms. Scott on the phone and ask her all kinds of questions about her having worked on Dark Shadows; how cool. :)

He was gay as were several dark shadows,actors
@Amphitera
@Amphitera 4 жыл бұрын
@@janetlieb2507 except that there is zero proof of that, and all the gaysayers are always quoting each other without having anything but their own wishful thinking to go on. There were a few who were known to be homosexual, because they said so or openly lived with their partners. To go on and on trying to make it look like that applied to everyone (even to all the people who were happily married- after all, that just means they were in the closet by their logic) is pathetic and disrespectful, to say the least.
@thejupiter2574
@thejupiter2574 4 жыл бұрын
@@Amphitera It is your Homophobia that is both 'pathetic' and 'disrespectful' Being thought of or said to be Gay is, NOT, an insult nor is it disrespectful. Most people are assumed to be Heterosexual but not all of them are. Being Gay is just another sexual orientation that one is born with. Nothing wrong with it. In regards to Frid, just because 'you' did not get the memo about his being gay does not mean he was not. Frid did not officially come out to his 'straight' fans, but many, many gay fans knew it and they knew Jonathan and Louis and Joel and Chris and Keith and Graig . Frid felt it was none of the fans business and he did not want to put up with the hatred and bigotry that Louis Edmonds had to go through with several soap opera fans. There are many levels of Coming Out and not every gay person comes out to everyone. There are many DS fans who knew and worked with Frid who knew he was gay in his personal life. Frid did not make an issue of it and only those he was close to, trusted and worked with, knew. The mention of Homosexuality among DS fans today still gets responses of hatred and arguments because fans like Marilyn W on youtube go on a hate filled religious tirade over it.

In the DS bloopers there are examples of JF making word inversions that alluded to his previous life as a Shakespearian actor. I'm grateful that Dan Curtis and the writers of DS allowed JF a great deal of artistic control over the development of Barnabas. However the word inversions, according to Nancy Kersey were a combo of his dyslexia and the lack of time/prep the show gave actors to learn their lines, hence the teleprompter. Everyone. Dan Curtis and others [including JF] gave JF a hard time about having to learn his lines -- except that the worst offenders of line dropping --according to my colleagues who watched the show as a first-run and re-run--were Joan Bennet and Grayson Hall. Even her husband Sam Hall criticized his own wife for this and her over-acting. Go figure.

@@lylepetrov6505 That is just your opinion. She acted as she was directed to do. It was because of her acting that fans fell in love with the Barnabas / Julia story and both actors were kept on instead of the original plan of killing them both off.

@Bossmanrocks From interviews posted in the facebook groups, Frid loved and adored Lara Parker. He fave her personal advice on how to play her role in her audition for the part His advice to her helped her win the role. She was one of his favorite ladies from the show. They remained close friends until he died. They were just good friends who enjoyed each others company and humor. Lara was married with two kids and Mr. Frid did not date the ladies but he had a lot of lady friends. Lara was like his favorite from the show and then Marie Wallace too from what I have read.

@@thejupiter2574 Thank you for all that information. I thought they might have had a good working relationship, because they worked so well together, not to mention the strong chemistry between them. As far as Frid's personal life, from what I understand, he was gay. He had relationships with both Rod Taylor and Raymond Burr. Not that it matters what he was, but at that time you couldn't come out, so he had to keep that part of his life under wraps.
