I have worked with 3 and 4 colors I don’t have a ring. I’ve tried 2 right 2 left, and one color on index finger one color middle finger. Very fun and satisfying. I arrange my balls of yarn in different places to keep twisting to a minimum. What I mean is left index yarn is in a bag to far left of me, mid finger yarn near left, right finger index near right, etc. Of course 4 color may have long runs , if you catch floats… twisted yarn is unavoidable in my world. I work with my yarn on the floor to tension better for me. Hmmmm that’s how I was taught 60 years ago? I’ve also done 3 in one hand just pulling up the working color as needed. I’ve thought a ring might be fun to try but I have not… maybe another lifetime 😊you tell me how you like it. I want a be positive sweater! The graphic detailing is brilliant. Bravo Max. ! And Bravo Jonathan Day! A clever design sir. Your color choices always inspire me. I want so much to knit all the yarns! As I always say… so much yarn so little time. No idea if this made sense but it is late and I’m hitting send. Happy knitting London guy.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share, record, edit these videos! Appreciate all of them! Your sweater is gorgeous too. And also, I can totally see myself wearing a t-shirt that says it's always Jonathan day :-) I have the same question about knitting with more than 2 colors too so I'm excited to see what tips/tricks you find out in the next podcast. Have you considered patron or Kofi? I'd love to keep supporting you.

When it comes to colorwork with more than two colors, I just hold yarn double in one hand and pick/throw the color I need from that hand when I come across it, being very careful to spread my stitches and keep my floats even. What decides whether or not I want to pick or throw my third color is color dominance. I'm a lefthanded continental knitter, so when I knit two-handed colorwork I throw with my left and pick with my right. Whatever color I throw has more color dominance than the color I pick, because the floats of the thrown stitches run underneath the floats of the picked stitches. Sweet Georgia has a taking back Friday video about color dominance that I found really helpful when it came to colorwork. I hope this makes sense and doesn't come off too ramble-y. I'm excited to see what technique you look to use for your colorwork sweater Jonathan!

Thank you for lovely episode. I have two wips coziest memories blanket and Wests mkal shawl. I couldn’t knit the shawl so I did knit one squere in blanket. I knit one handed and I knit with max two yarns at the same time. I just knit same row another time with third (and fourth) colour. I secure my floats on next row if needed. I love the sweater you have designed. It is plain with little twist so it is very wearable. I just love that kind of sweaters and accesssories. Those are so easy to match with other clothes I have. I would do the stipes also in the hem of that sweater. It would frame the sweater. In my opinion it would look nice. Here in Finland it is cold and we’re going towards winter. So I just love I get to wear my woolen knitwear. So lets just enjoy this bit chillier time and knit maybe one more sweater and pair of socks

I do fair isle and I throw. Both strands are in my right hand and I only throw the one colour (so I kinda drop the one I'm not using, if that makes sense?) to stop the threads from tangling when I lift one yarn over another I then pull it under on my next go, so that way my threads never end up super tangled. I also detangle at the end of each row if in the event of tangles. It's much better to deal with tangles early then to let it turn into a massive knot. Throwing is my preference but I can also do continental, but in that case all my threads will be in my right hand and they are kept in the same orientation as I pick to avoid tangling. Same general rules about tangles apply for me regardless of continual or throwing. As for two handled fair isle. I just think it's odd and I think it overcomplicates what is otherwise a very simple technique

Hello Jonathan, New here and loving it. I just finished the Stephen West Penguono and loved knitting it a lot. I will start another one soon with all the leftovers. I love this chevron shawl by Stephen. Anyway, I wanted to pass on information to you about Fair Isle and Stranded knitting techniques. I hold two strands of yarns in each hand and then twist them when I need the other color RS depending on the pattern. Remember, do not hold the strands too tight. Good luck and I hope this makes sense.

Great podcast, thank you 😊 just trying to finish my Scout shawl by Florence Spurling, boy this has been a challenge, as it’s colourwork flat with purl rows! So can’t offer any tips on using more than 2 colours, but by the end of the project my hands are trained to purl with both hands. On an easier note I knit Satelite earlier this year, and not only was it lovely to knit, it’s my favourite shawl ever to wear…hope you enjoy yours just as much.

I knit colourwork two-handed, and the few times I've ventured into 3+-colour rows I've found it super finicky, but I think it's because I've only done it in small bits and haven't been able to get into the rhythm. I throw the main colour and pick the contrast colours, and I'd imagine the colourwork ring contraption would be super useful, because my main problem was preserving the colour dominance hierarchy on my contrast colours.

Yay - you are back from your jolly so lovely. Love your sweater. Looks like a good one to knit so will be excited to know when the pattern is available. Your inside out sweater will look perfect with a stripped rib. As you have done with the cuffs. I am a two handed English style knitter, although I knit the Yorkshire way ( have my right hand needle tucked under my arm), and don’t have any issues with three plus colourway and I don’t think you will either. If I can manage it then you can. I am knitting a sleeveless pullover for my daughter. Also knitting Christmas hot-water bottle covers for gifts. Enjoying both. Hi Jonathan, don't think you should compare your knitting speed with Inga or Creabea, as they ALWAYS only knit in one colour without many patterns. It takes much longer to knit multi-colored pattern or just texture. Would love to see them knit a Marie wallin or a Sari garment. 😉

I LOVE your sweater design!!! I'm a continental knitter - can't seem to be able to hold the yarn in my right hand. I knit 2 color stranded colorwork by just holding both in my left hand. When doing 3 colors I end up resorting to the little ring. Can't keep 3 yarns apart on my finger without the ring. Haven't tried 4 color, but the ring has enough slots to theoretically make it work. The ring is a bit annoying and slows me down, but much faster than trying to struggle with 3 colors without it.

Love love Love your sweater 😊 how wild is that skein matching that painting! I’ll be in London next month, can you tell me which yarn store is a must visit?

Hi, Jonathan. I love the Shift Cowl! The colours are very flattering on you. I also love your sweater design. When will it be posted? The socks are cool… I love the colour. (Jonathan, I’m new to the Kitchener. Have you done a tutorial on it?) I like the colour of your next socks. The Wrong Side sweater is looking really good… I love the colour of the yarn. I love the colours that you are using on the chevron shawl by Stephen West shawl. I love your acquisitions… especially the colour way that matches your painting.
